4-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start reading about leadership
Leadership books remind me of cooking, there are a finite number of common ingredients that make up the majority of dishes, but there seems to be an infinite number of ways to combine and present these ingredients.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not so innovative
Maxwell's concepts of what a leader is is quite accurate. However, I don't think he needed to spend over 200 pages to define what a leader is.That's what this book came to be: one long, repetitive, obvious definition for leadership.I didn't see these as laws so much as nuances of what he'd already said.
5-0 out of 5 stars Begin Here
If you've never read anything by John Maxwell, then you should. And this is the best place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
This is the best book I have read in regards to successful business. If you work in the corporate world, this is a must read.It is based on five years of research, and the author doesn't try to prove anything other than that which the facts prove.I am reading it for the fourth time now and draw more from it each time.Again, a must read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good to Great review from Steven Vornea
Every single person needs to read this book and just buy it! This book can be a life changer for people.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best business books out there
Jim Collins puts forward one of the great concepts in business...and in life...that getting the right people in the right situations is the best staple of great leadership.Collins' message can be applied to any situation (business, sports, education, etc.).He has an engaging writing style and uses a wide variety of companies to illustrate his central theme of leadership as leading to great success.Collins also illustrates the great importance of a humble leader, one who gives of him/herself for the betterment of the system as a whole. This was a fascinating read, and you will close the book with a great deal of insight into how you run both your professional and personal life.A terrific, terrific read.In fact, I have gone back and begun to read Built to Last, which is actually the prequel to Good to Great.I honestly could not recommend this book more than I do. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Take work from your strengths
A fantastic book of weekness and strength, a human being is a mixture of weekness and strength equally and those among us who take work with thier strength come out successful regardless of the profession they are involve in, they can focus on thier strength rather than weakness, positive attitude regardless all the adversaries of a life. I learned a great deal out of this Marcus Buckingham book and I strongly recommend to the book lovers don't miss this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Novel Concept
By:Jeffrey W. Bennett, Founder of LayMentor and author of Under the Lontar Palm.
2-0 out of 5 stars Ok~ but I think the Keirsey Temperment Test is more accurate - and cheaper.
This book has its good points. If anything, it helps you put into words what you wantfrom a supervisor, but it is not very accurate. The online test does not account for a difference between when 2 of their options are both exactly like you, or if they don't describe you at all. This messes up the results, and it did not describe me very well. I am not just in denial. I have taken a lot of personality type tests, like the Keirsey Temperment sorter and have a pretty good idea of my strengths. So, although this book is pretty good in making you understand the importance of incouraging your strengths, it still leaves you wondering about how you fit in to their terminology.

2-0 out of 5 stars Collection of condescending cliches stressing the obvious
I found this book (I listened to the audio version) to be a major disappointment. The tips offered by Carnegie may have appeared insightful and provocative to assembly line supervisors back in the 1930s, but in the more enlightened 21st century a lot of his "good advice" comes across as irritatingly simplistic and sometimes even downright condescending and offensive. It's so easy and straightforward: Be nice to people, remember their first names, always be positive and you will instantly be liked by everyone. Overly obvious and trite - hardly the kind of stuff that would find its way into today's Harvard Business Review. Adding to the sense of irritation is the voice of the reader who tries to sound upbeat and optimistic, giving the whole performance the hollow feel of amateurish propaganda better suited to "Pleasantville" than to "Wall Street".
4-0 out of 5 stars Back to Basics
This little book is recommended reading in the company I currently work for and unlike some of the other recommendations, Fish and Moving My Cheese for instance, this has some value.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great "Beginners Guide"--Well Worth It.
As a 20 year veteran business consultant I strongly recommend this one because it presents the "meat and potatoes" of leadership.I personally am tired of all the "fad" books out there trying to put a spin on leadership when what is important are the essential skills of leadership. This book captures those skills and is great for a new leader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to Read-Well Organized-Great to Use Seperately Chapter by Chapter
This book is a really easy-to-read, practical book for those who want some fun ideas on how to share leadership qualities with managers or up and coming leaders in your organization.
1-0 out of 5 stars If you want to become a great boss, don't read this
Fox uniquely attempts to give suggestions on how to keep the best employees. Fox divides his book into fifty short stories that sometimes include a real life situation. Many of his anecdotes have serious flaws in the basic principles of Organizational Behavior, while others do not fully explain how to handle potential problems. There are instances where his suggestions can be very useful in becoming a good manager. At other times, his stories have good concepts, but do have loopholes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the read!
Geoffrey Moore's latest book should be required reading for all executives in the age of the Internet. Rather than filling out a theoretically weak book with numerous examples, or building a detailed theory which cannot beapplied, Moore has produced a brilliant work of practical business theory.Drawing on and extending his work in Crossing the Chasm, Inside theTornado, and The Gorilla Game, Moore looks at various stages in thedevelopment of businesses, how to manage for shareholder value, how tocreate and sustain competitive advantage, and how companies with diversecultures can effectively overcome the innovator's dilemma. Any executivefeeling threatened by the Internet, or wishing to take full advantage ofdiscontinuous innovations, should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strategies for tactical leaders
"Living on the Fault Line" is like a diorama of a new battlefield. Reading this book, like studying the scale model, should give the experienced leader new perspectives on which troops to deploy and wherethey should go. It is a tool to show the terrain, the high points andambush risks that armies face. This market is not lacking in people who canact, and this book shows them where to focus their efforts in a usable, timely and concentrated way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved the book and enjoyed the CD
This is great book on investing and I highly recommend it.The CD is great to listen to in the car and gets all the points across.I suggest that you also get the book. It's way better than the Graham books - which are very dated - they give you the tools to buy stocks selling at below book value - not a lot of those around any more.Besides Buffett got over Graham years ago.

This book tries to reverse-engineer Warren Buffett's investment strategy and does a horrible job of it. Like all of Mary Buffett's books, this is long on hype and short on credibility.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Analyzing the Communication Skills of the Opposite Sex
I feel that this book was very informational and useful with many instances in my life. It really gave me an insight to the reasons why people act how they do, and it made me comprehend my boyfriend and friends more. I have misunderstood them many times, and after reading parts of this book, I have realized what went wrong. 1-0 out of 5 stars Yakk...
First, it would be nice to explain, that this book is targeted to (a) women, (b) women suffering from the lack fo self-confidence, (c) womensuffering from the lack of self-confidence and comfortable with blaming menfor sexism on a working place. It's just too much time spent on sexesrelations instead of real communications problems. Of course, difference ofmale and female styles of communication is a problem, you have to keep inmind, but this is not the ONLY problem. Reading the review on a boook Iexpected advice on improving my communication skills, not to hear a bunchof regular feministic stream of accusations of the business world. It'sjust misleading, useless and very unpleasant. So if you want feministpropaganda, this book is for you, if you really want improve your skills,go somewhere else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good explanation of male/female communication differences.
This is a useful, interesting, provocative description of differences between men's and women's speech behaviors.Tannen takes an essentially socio-cultural stance in explaining the reasons for these differences.Notonly does she present coherently her ideas, her speech is crisp andanimated; thus, it is a delight to listen to her. This audio is anexcellent introduction to Tannen's work on this subject.I ask studentsenrolled in my Gender and Communication course to listen to this editedtape in lieu of purchasing the book, as this proves to be an efficientalternative to reading the entire book. For instructors similarlyinclined, I recommend purchasing two or three copies to be placed onreserve in the university library. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not written with Emotional Intelligence
The author of this book was obviously not applying "emotional intelligence" principles when writing this book. The points were all there and really proved why emtional intelligence is important, but it was just not done in a good manner.I do not typically shy away from long books, but this one was impossible. It was assigned to me and about 30 other people in my organization (we were to discuss and present ideas found inside the book), and can I tell you that no one finished it because of repetitious and dreadful writing?Just know that to be successful, you HAVE to exhibit emotional intelligence and be a intuitive, kind and generally good person to work with. If you don't believe me, save yourself the time/energy and buy the Cliffs notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tool of Necessity
A must read for trainers, trainees and people managers. Goleman's work provides a benchmark for training and development professionals. For everyone it provides a template for increasing one's self-awareness and operational effectiveness within for profit, non-profit and familyenvironments. Nothing fancy, just a plain old common sense appproach backed by documented research and experiences. As a mentor to a significant number of students and professionals, I have recommended this text without hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional + interpersonal skills = Success!
This book simply showed that success is not just dependent on cognitive abilitites but more importantly on emotional competence.

4-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Wisdom
These CD's arrived yesterday and I eagerly listened to the first 2 of the 4 disks. The concepts on these disks are timeless, and especially valuable today when the overwhelming narcissism of our culture/media sends the wrong message to our young people on what it takes to get ahead. His talk about "the boomerang" of self absorption is especially apt, as is the discussion about enthusiasm and gratitude.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Dilbert Attitude
If you've ever been in the hi-tech rat race, you already know that the Dilbert comic strip is a documentary. You may also have started to wonder how all the pointy-hairs came to hold such similar sets of bizarre beliefs. Well, your worst fears have come true. There is a secret cabal of pointy-haired teaching, and this is its text.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not Adams' best effort
While the classic comic strips included in this book (most dating from the early and mid-1990's) continue to be amusing, the rest of this book missed its target.Written as an over-the-top instructional guide for managers, it is takes itself so seriously that little of it remains amusing.Adams is clearly attempting to satirize bad management practices and abuses, but he might be trying too hard to be funny. While there are plenty of bad managers out there, I doubt that many of them are as intentionally bad as suggested here. This book was indeed a light read, and fans of the "Dilbert" comic strip should find familiar material here, but overall, "The Dilbert Principle" is a better book.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOL

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Book
I have listened to this audiocasset over 20 times. My 5 year old business has left me wanting to close the doors and walk away. It leaves me with too little free time to enjoy life. This tape really hits home and makes you think about what a business really is and has opened my eyes.I have now started taking steps to change my business for good.Gerber believes your business should be apart from its owner and this makes perfect sense.I can't believe I haven't seen it before now.I have been a slave to my business for years and I need to set up a system so the business can run itself. My concentration should be making the system run smoothly and not the day to day work.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book in a million
I have never been a full-fledged business owner although I worked for one as his business fell apart. Had he had this book I might still have that job.2-0 out of 5 stars Mostly Common Knowledge And Fluff
If you picked up this book to help you build your existing business or build a new one, you might be disappointed. Since your thinking of starting your own business, then you should know that most small businesses fail within the first five years. The author hits on some reasons why they fail but most of these you already know. Do you know that if you are not organized, if you don't change or create new ideas or plans and become stagnat or if you force yourself to do every task yourself, your business will be limited in growth and may eventually fail? Right there is the first 25% of the book fit into one sentence. Then he goes onto his love affiar with turn key businesses. But when he starts talking about his favorite business it should make a reader nervous. He starts talking about the great sucess of McDonalds fast food restuarant franchise. McDonalds is a great success and one to be looked at carefully but not for the reasons he points out. It's apparent he has not been in a McDonalds all that often. He mentions that at McDonalds they depend on consistancy at all their chains. For example the fries stay in the fryer for ten minutes "a soggy french fry is not a McDonald's french fry". At any McDonalds a customer knows what to expect. Then he goes into mention that this is why McDonalds chain resturant is more successfull than those businesses that depend on trade name recognition. I'm sorry this throws a red flag. People eat there beacuse it is fast and it is [not expensive}, not becuase of consistant service. They make a large profit because they keep costs down. I do believe that McDonalds spends a large budget on trade name recognition, I have seen many commercials for McDonalds within the last year; particularly with the Olympics. This whole section undermines the rest of the author's book. If you know that a large section is misleading or biased it makes it difficult to listen to the rest the ideas without already being judgemental. I admit that I am not the smartest business person but its clear Michael Gerber isn't either. ... Read more

This is the first "rogue warrior" book that I have read and I was instantly hooked. The principles that the author puts forward are simple and effective, driving home the overall messages very well. This book has helped me to think differently about what I do, where I work, and how I allow people to impact my day-to-day activities. In short, the book has pointed out that YOU are the only one who is in control of your career...that through proper training and preparation, you can be ready for anything...and that true leaders disregard the political ramifications and take decisive and definative stances - in spite of the trials that they will face.5-0 out of 5 stars This is the good one.....
Even if you are not the leader of your team/group/posse, whatever, this is a great book to help you to BECOME that leader. This is a straightahead, no nonsense book which makes you look at yourself and where you want to be, and what you want to do and best of all, makes you think. It is not an answer book, that is for sure, so be ready to think fast.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dick is not a businessman
Sorry, but I know Mr. Marcinko (on a casual basis) and I know many of his former TEAM warriors on a more professional basis.Dick is an EXCEPTIONAL conflict commander, but this skillset does not transfer to a business environment.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars History from newspapers
Buyers beware!!! This book is huge... Amazon should give its dimensions, but I am guessing more than a foot long and 3/4 foot wide.Great reading about history -- if you have strong arms and a sturdy table.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great motivator for any IT person out there
After buying the book I was a little scaptic about this book keeping me intrested but rather than being too technical and 'professional' the book is more like a drama with alot of winners and losers. It was a greatinspiring experience-reading stories like the ones about bill gates, stevejobs and his body 'woz'.The book floats along the evolution of the computerindustry, the IBM empire, the Microsoft phenomenen throght the stories of thepeople who made it and those who couldn't stay in the top.A must read forevery person who has some computer background who wants to know how it allstarted and also for the not-yet computer fan who just wants a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tales Well-Told
These really are "stories" rather than commentaries. A born storyteller, Young presents what he calls "inspiring tales of the entrepreneurs and inventors who revolutionized modern business." They include the "pioneersand pirates" who developed the prototype for the first commercial computersas well as Thomas J. Watson, Jr., William Shockley, Jack Kilby, JayForrester, Edwin De Castro, Douglas Engelbart, Bob Noyce, Andy Grove, &Gordon Moore, Edward Roberts, Steve Jobs & Steve Wozniak, Don Estridge,Lew Eggbrecht, Bill Gates & Paul Allen, Tom Carter, Bill McGowan, CraigMcCaw, Bob Taylor, Steve Case, and Marc Andreesen.Read more

What do the Honda Supercub, Intel's 8088 processor, and hydraulic excavators have in common? They are all examples of disruptive technologies that helped to redefine the competitive landscape of their respective markets. These products did not come about as the result of successful companies carrying out sound business practices in established markets. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mind-Expanding
This is one of the best -- and scariest -- business books I've ever read. Christensen clearly illustrates why many of the 'tried and true' formulas really don't work. His research is compelling and is presented clearly enough for non-technical readers. I can't recommend this book highly enough!

5-0 out of 5 stars Counterintuitive, well-supported, and powerful
This text excels on several levels:It is very readable, and tells a story which is understandable and compelling even at a cursory pace. For the motivated reader, digging deeper, especially spending time on the introduction and each chapter's endnotes, there is a huge amount of data and insight into that data that is well-structured for assimilation. Finally, the theories presented, once understood, become both a lens for interpreting past and current market dynamics, and set the stage for deployable actions in a number of industries.

2-0 out of 5 stars It must have been mistaken identitiy...
During fourth of july vacation, I had a chsance to see an old college friend, who is a vice president for a large computer hard drive firm... he was showing offf his new Toyota hybrid when we began talking about the market forces, which interfered with large companies responding to the emerging needs and changes in the marketplace.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not an average Joe
I've only heard audio portions of this book so far and I've enjoyed it immensely. I'm a huge Yankee fan and I love the way Joe manages them - and George Steinbrenner for that matter; calm, clear, focused, patient. However, I just wanted to respond to Bill from NY, who said that Joe Torre can not write andthat the book wasn't very "inciteful". 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Advice
This book offers good advice for managers of most professions. It may be simplistic to say that the baseball industry strategies will apply to all areas, but one of the first things you learn IS that it will apply to most areas -- because it deals with one long-time commonality -- people. Joe Torre shows that his insight and respect for others really does work and that it is NOT just money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful examples that can be applied to many situations

5-0 out of 5 stars If you own a business, you need to listen to this CD - Several times,
Period.

4-0 out of 5 stars Empathy inLeadership and Management
More "sound advice" from the autor of "Sever Habits of Highly Effective People". Quite a few (at least semi) practical advices in this book - building on the priveate and public victories. I think Covey once more prooved his ability to put this into a leadership perspective. Althoug it may not be absolutely necessary to read The Sever Habits in advance, it undoubtedly would be an advantage .
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but redundant on many points
This follow up book to the SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE (Covey), repeats a lot of the same ideas in this title. However, it applies the ideas in a slightly different way and is a useful read who want to enforce the difficult to develop seven habits and apply them on an organizational level.
