4-0 out of 5 stars Managing from the Heart.
I have been reading a lot of management books recently. This is the first one I didn't want to put down after 15 minutes. It's an interesting and easy read with relevant points to make managers better leaders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons for Your Heart and Head
This book was really good.It was moving and it was right-on in my opinion. The real-life application through Harry's story made the principles more meaningful.I continue to learn daily how important these principles are.Truly being on your employee's side, listening to them, trusting them and helping them grow and achieve. You'll never go wrong.I re-read this book to help me remember these truths when times get tough. Also, the professional editorial Amazon includes for this book is a bunch of hogwash in my opinion. The guy who wrote it must have had a block of ice for a heart and just a regular old block for a head!

4-0 out of 5 stars You've Gotta Have Heart!
As a manager who has had to lay off employees during the recent economic downturn, I am glad I discovered this book.I applied the recommendations on dealing with employees and I feel it enabled both my staff and me to face the reality of business issues with mutual respect and understanding. I would recommend it to any level of manager. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars (Elite Print by biographer Walker);(italics by autobiographer Lewis)
There was a consistent pattern of the italic matter in which Lewis* kept to his focus "business" and businessman (and bussiness women) and just a brief mention of activity with his wife and children(the book opens with a lengthy discussion of his "humble beginnings" andhowhis older relatives, especially his grandmother were his greatest strength as a boy, although he does mention his great love for his mother and respect for his step-father and siblings)...His thrill for being accepted at "Harvard" never left him and there is a bldg for law students named after him on Harvard's campus. He gives insight into the wars within in the brokerage world(and how one should be careful what one sells, even with biggies like "McCall Patterns" since if the company should falter in any wayshortly after you've sold it,you might be legally held responsible to the buyers) and how "other values" matter more when he gets in swiftly fading health... his biographer ,Blair(co-author of the book published posthumously) does a marvelous insert between the Lewis's italics and also includes : an epilogue(others were left to mourn for him on01/19/1993); an index ; &a list of all who contributed to "his* story). It was a book worth reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bio/autobiography of a superstrong personality
I've been reading more business related stuff as of late, and I picked up "Why Should White Guys..." a while back. Reginald Lewis earns tremendous respect in my eyes for his intense energy and willingness to take risks to achieve. Reading this book, you can see what a trailblazer he actually was as he pulled off a seemingly impossible buyout of Beatrice Foods and then drove them to strong economic performance.
5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous, instructive, educational
In an era when corporate America dominates the political and cultural landscape in music, art, dance, pop culture, even athletics (try to buy a ticket to a professional sports game-the corporations have block-purchased them out of range for most familes), there comes a time when the average person must ask himself if he or she is going to live the nine to five life of lifetime struggle, or will he take the leap into the world of business entrepreneurship where the promise of the American dream of big money and big power is still possible. Reginald Lewis takes you there whether you are old, young, black, white, male or female.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love Zig ziglar
His presentation is always beautiful and he expounds so well. Very good for your home library

4-0 out of 5 stars Sales
I have the audio cassette version, and i must admit this is one of Zigs best audio programs. The first part of the tape or cd talks about Self Image, then it goes on the Prospecting, and then other areas of sales. Dont waste your money on any of Ziglars other tapes, if you want an audio program which will benefit all areas of your life, this is the one. We are all in sales, you sell yourself in an interview when trying to land that job you want, you sell yourself to that guy or girl that you want to ask out on a date. We are all in sales. Just a little note, these audio programs where done quiet a few years ago, and now they have been put onto Cd's, if only it were made available on cd in the first place, because i ended up buying the cd version and giving the cassette version to my friend. Another way to generate sales. I hope you enjoy this program, its the only one you need to succeed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reflection of yourself in this book
I must say I don't understand the other negative reviews.I found this book to be absolutely wonderful.Gary and Linda tackle the seeds of addictive behaviors, be it food, alcohol, drugs or sex. They also tackle issues such as perfectionism and work-aholism as well as others.I love the gentleness with which this book presents itself. It is not a book that you quickly read through and/or skim along. You need to read a section and actually think about what is stated to receive the full and rich benefits.Yes, it is written in a simple language and does repeat certain concepts; however, the concept is written to further stress that we need to look inward rather than be constantly reactive to our outside stressors. It offers yet another way of looking at our emotions by focusing on the energy of them and where that energy is released in our bodies. It also offers more seeds of self reflection. I loved this book and will recommend it to others whole-heartedly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Emotions, Soul, and Heart Combine to Make a Person Whole.
This is a continuation of The Mind of The Soul by this pair and The Seat of the Soul by Mr. Zukav. He has published three others about the soul, yet he is not a psychologist or specialist in this field. This is an extremely simplified textbook which found its way to the library sale. The bold-faced "highlighted" parts throughout are distracting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Journey from Your Head to Your Heart
Gary Zukav and Linda Francis did a wonderful job in bringing those who have a hard time feeling and dealing with their emotions a powerful book that will help you journey "from your head to your heart."

In 1964, NBC clerk Michael Eisner made $65 a week. Though he only took one business course in his life--accounting--he did have a head for business: as CEO of Disney, he earned over half a billion bucks in 1997. Though he had no foundation in finance, he averted the bloody dismemberment of Disney by takeover sharks when he took over in 1984, and by May 1998 he earned over $80 billion for Disney stockholders. Not bad for a guy who, on his first day in Walt's old office, met a manager of the film division BVD (Buena Vista Distribution) and innocently asked whether "Disney made underwear."Read more

I bought this book on special - ... Can't complain!! 4-0 out of 5 stars A very good book indeed.
I got this book during my last visit at Disney and I can say I was not disapointed. The book starts with Mr. Eisner's visit to the hospital and then goes all the way back to his summer school years. 3-0 out of 5 stars Back When Moore Had a Real Issue......
This is from an era where Micheal Moore actually made valid points.I'm a Republican, but I'm also a Christian. That means I believe that people are supposed to give a darn about something besides just money.Greed and heartlessness in the corporate world are very real... though I'm a capitalist, this greed thing is something thatIstruggle with. There are folks who lose their jobs for no reason at all, hard working people with nowhere to go.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you work hard and the company prospers, you lose your job
Of course, this book is partly out-of-date. It covers mainly the Clinton years. But the issues it tackles are still very actual.
1-0 out of 5 stars Michael Moore Throws a Tantrum
I've seen Michael Moore on TV, humorously trying to get an appointment Roger Smith (then General Motors chairman). The book "Downsize This!" has the moral high ground concerning the looting of corporations by CEOs, accompanied by plant closings. However, I rapidly lost interest because author Moore strayed from this subject. After thirty-sevenpages of wandering. I concluded that he'd forgotten about it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as other S&S CDs, coverage limited
Prof. Dressler is decent to listen to, but the overview given was too narrow in scope to be of much use in my Crim Law class. My professor was much more concerned with all the areas of Crim Law that are different from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. These CDs just give the basics.

Editorial Review

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Hedrick Smith, author of The New Russians and The Power Game: How Washington Really Works, traveled around the world to research this study of America's economic competitiveness, and to see how other nations organize themselves differently. He found plenty of positive lessons for the U.S., and argues that the new global economic challenges demand adaptation. He illustrates the kind of innovation required in the fields of business and education with specific examples from the U.S. and from other countries. He praises Japanese and German encouragement of workers as "stakeholders" in their companies. Indeed, Smith recommends teamwork in all areas of society, and collaboration between government, private enterprise and schools to produce a more humane and productive setting for work and learning. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Right On
Reading from the experienced perspective of an unemployed white-collar worker (IBM got rid of me 5 months ago after 28 years of hard work and dedication), there is truth in this book, even if the undercover job was not acquired. Ehrenreich's insight into the resulting leeches selling transitional services is right on -- people marketing $200 to $7000 services and clueless activities for finding a comparable job. If you are one of the nervously employed, I recommend reading this book. You will see what is in store for you should you wake up to corporate downsizing tomorrow, after having done everything right.
4-0 out of 5 stars White Collared
The premise of this social commentary is pretty straight forward. The author/investigator set out to find a corporate job and quickly found out the frustration involved in that process.
2-0 out of 5 stars Bait and switch indeed - most of the book not really aboutjob-searching
I really liked her "Nickel and dimed" book, enough so that I bought this one just on the strength of it. I'm sorry to say I was disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cultivating Harmony At Work
After much success with his first book in collaboration with the Dalai Lama, The Art of Happiness, Howard Cutler decided to write another book. In this book Cutler wanted to explore some ideas and topics not touched upon in the first one. Namely, since work takes up an overwhelming amount of the day for most people, how can we find happiness at work? After all, most of us cannot sit around all day in a cave without venturing out into the real world. If we have no practical way to take our spiritual practice into the real world then what good is it?
3-0 out of 5 stars Art of happiness
OK, but just OK.Slow, tedious to read, but good input into how to be satisfied at work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide to Satisfaction and Happiness
Using the concepts presented in the Art of Happiness, this book explains how to apply the concepts specifically to the workplace. Not everyone has the "dream job" but what you make of your job and your life is what you will reap from it. Use this guide to be more content with your job and your life and recognize that personal contentment/happiness trumps money, power and prestige. Although this book is inspired by a Buddihst monk, there are no confilcts with any Christian ideals or concepts. Rather the techniques presented here are echoed in Christian thinking. ... Read more

The multiple voices are poorly cast for a husband and wife duowho have arguments that aren't realistic or helpful. He sounds gay, shesounds like a materialistic bimbo. Each time they cut to an interviewsegment of Nierenberg, there is a constant buzz that is noticable. Poorrecordings. If it had been a series of records of Nierenberg speaking, itwould have been more informative.Although some of the information wasuseful, it is few and far between, and the low production value of thecassette takes attention away from that.It is obvious that Nierenbergknows his stuff, but this production was not a great communication tool forhim. They may have gotten my dollars, but at least now they won't getyours if you are reading this. Two words: Stay Away!
