3-0 out of 5 stars Real life examples but unremarkable overall
I am a fan of John Maxwell's work -Just not this book.I have read/listened to John's books "Today Matters" & "Thinking for a Change" and really enjoyed both very much.
3-0 out of 5 stars Can help, but not outstanding
This is the first book I ever read of the author. Therefore, my comment might look more positive than other reviewers who had read the authors' other books. In fact, when I bought it, I took it as a book of communications. Of course I was wrong and it is a book about "leadership". As a middle aged mid-tier manager who had read many books about leadership, I am obliged to say that this is not outstanding. However, I must give my praise to the part devoted to the importance and practice of "listening". The author gave interesting messages about it and presented even more interesting sayings, such as:-
3-0 out of 5 stars surprisingly forgettable
I've read at least six other Maxwell books, and this is the least memorable of all. It's not that there is a lack of content here...looking back through the book, there is a lot of good advice that would be valuable in developing your sphere of influence. It just seems to be an awkward assembly of borrowed wisdom that didn't stick once I closed the cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't wait more than 30 seconds to buy this book!
This book should be read by everyone!Whether you are a salesperson, a public speaker, or anyone that wants to communicate more effectively, this book will help you do it.Written in a breezy, interesting style, the author gives great suggestions on how to make a presentation effectively. It is a short book, by design. My only regret about this book is that I was unaware of its existence until a month ago.
4-0 out of 5 stars Agood little book about the art of communication
What sort of person do you really hate to engage in conversation? For me, it's somebody who doesn't know when to stop speaking.
1-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes 30 Seconds Is An Eternity
The most interesting thing about this book is that the author feels no pressure to legitimize his assertion that there is something special about 30 seconds. Because his background is in the field of television entertainment, (never to be confused with communications), he finds significance in the length of television commercials, which frequently run 30 seconds. That this is done for financial reasons, not attention-span reasons, has evaded him completely. HTGYPAI3SOL is just another in the endless chain of How To books penned by individuals struggling with delusions of expertise, whose only skill is self-promotion, that package the obvious and resell it to the gullible. Readers who find anything in this slim and overpriced tome even remotely surprising or counter-intuitive are advised to probe deeper into the self-help section of the bookstore for volumes on Shoe-Tying For Beginners, The ABCs Of Writing Your Name, and Gravity - It's Not Just A Good Idea, It's The Law. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars BEST career guidance book out there
I am a pre-law advisor and general career counselor advisor at a state university. This is the only career guidance book I recommend to all my students and advisees.Other books all basically try to match up interests and skills. This book basically asks you to discover what you feel most passionate about, and would give your life the most meaning.AMEN!I tell my students I would rather just be performing "okay" in a career that makes me happy and fulfilled, than be outstanding or even the best in a career that makes me unhappy and unfulfilled. What is more important:money and material wealth, or happiness and fulfillment? It depends which way you define "success," and Boldt defines it (correctly in my view!) as the latter.I've seen two many friends and students go into careers for the wrong reason and be miserable.Read this book, and give it to anyone you know who is searching for a career. You just might have helped to steer them down the road to career fulfilment and happiness, rather than career emptiness and depression.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
I liked this book a lot in the store as I glanced over the pages.I wanted to make sure it was not a poor self help book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I want to know if the people who wrote poor reviews are doing work that they really love. This book is good to gain a clear and positive perspective on work and what it really means, but in order to truly benefit from it, you have to read it with *cliche* an open mind. ... Read more

Of all of the inspiring tapes I have listened to and books I have read this one is simply the best! I intend to give copies of this to as many people as I can, especially young people, they really need to hear this encouraging message. This is one set of tapes you will NEVER regret purchasing. 5-0 out of 5 stars Get it if you are a dog owner

5-0 out of 5 stars good advice for dog training
Although I do disagree with some of the punishment techniques suggested in this book( I still haven't read the revised edition), I can still say that this is a great book.Of course this book doesn't replace obedience classes, but it's a great way to start training your dog and learning to communicate with it.I have read it several times and given it to friends who were getting ready to adopt a dog. It has helped me train three dogs, with obedience classes in addition to at home training, of course. It is definitely a classic and a must on any new dog owner's nightstand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dogs are NOT furry children
I have had an earlier version of this and have ordered the latest. I have used methods in this book to raise and train four Dobermans and a Great Dane. As others have said, the negative reviews come from people who have not read the book (one admits just flipping through it ina bookstore) or did not absorb what they read or have bought into the notion that dogs are really furry children. You can discipline your dog (or child) physically without being cruel. Sometimes for your safety or the dogs behavior must be corrected immediately. A physical reprimand (smack undeer the chin) is the fastest way to make your point. As others have also noted, there is so much more to this book than just dog training. The monks are kind, compassionate men who have developed an unmatched understanding of dog behavior through years of study and interaction with them and they convey that knowledge in clear, charming prose. Anyone with a dog or planning to get one should own this book.

Bliss offers real-life ideas and examples that anyone can use. Even if you've read all the self-help books or if you're a non-believer, this tape will motivate you to get things done. Give it a listen.

1-0 out of 5 stars First Audio Book I ever returned of 100s
I collect audio books, esp non-fiction, self-improvement, sales, history, etc. This book was so bad, I could not even keep it for trading.I would not want anyone to own a copy.It sounds like simple nagging.Get Brian Tracy or any of a dozen other books. Please do not spend a dime on this one.I currently own about 200 audio books, and this is the first I ever tood back to the store.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, helpful and to the point. No time wasted!

5-0 out of 5 stars I owe a lot of things to this book
This book hit the stands in 90's when I was an undegrad doing my 4 year course in Computer Science and Engineering. I devoured this book with the kind of passion a teenager devours his first Playboy/Penthouse.
3-0 out of 5 stars Classic Gates-- Before the Internet was Invented....
Seriously this is Bill Gates talking about the future but out of 300 pages about 9 are dedicated to talking about the internet -- and most of that is buried with other information. Lots of talk about applications and appliances that did not materialize....one book you need to read because-- then you know that all the gurus DO NOT KNOW everythng !! Wonderful for entrepreneurs who dont' doubt their own paths on their road ahead......

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading
Definitely worth reading. I'd also, however, suggest that if you really are curious about the early years of computing, you use the internet to check up other opinions of Microsoft's origin. There's two sides to every story...Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprises me - Andrew Grove's childhood
Never would I have expected a man behind Intel could have such a childhood.I picked this book because it was written by Andrew Grove and mostly because it sets in the the times of World War II.Although I could not get much from a Jews perspective during the war time, however the book has captured some of the essence of tension during the period.
2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting perspective, but lacking
When I finished this book, I was rather disappointed at its incompleteness. No doubt Andy Grove must be an extraordinary person after immigrating to America with almost nothing and then moving to become the CEO of Intel Corporation. His book gives some insight into his personality through his childhood experiences and his dedication to hard work can easily been seen through his striving for an education.
3-0 out of 5 stars Read this book or the content, not for literary strength
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Grove some time back. He's an intelligent man, with a powerful persona and strong sense of character. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for anyone thinking about becoming self-employed!
Actually, this book is excellent for people who are not only thinking about becoming self-employed but who are already self-employed and want to understand better the mentality transition from being an employee to beinga business owner. Paul and Sarah Edwards are engaging. They present theinformation sincerely, thoroughly and realistically without spoiling thedream. In fact, their own passion for self-employment and enthusiasm forhelping others to be successful in their own business is evidentthroughout. I enjoyed this audio book because it addresses what books onthe mechanics of operating a business leave out - that is the kind ofmindset, the fears and ability to overcome them required to be a successfulbusiness owner. As a business owner, one tends to be isolated and does nothave a boss to go to for advice and guidance. Paul and Sarah Edwards are anexcellent coaching team. Rich with instructions, insights, examples andexercises for self-employed people to develop themselves as their ownleaders, I found this book extremely valuable. I have listened to itseveral times already and with each listen, I glean more golden nuggets! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Trashcan filler
This book might be the worst book I have read in years. Susan Roane has filled 240 pages with more or less obvious information like OAR approach. Observe, Ask a Question, Reveal your Thought. I don't wanna spend much time on reviewing this book, but I'll tell you: If you expect something that analyzes, refers to any scientific papers (or any stuidies at all) or puts any psychological aspects in the mix, then forget this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very intelligent economist could have done better
I thoroughly enjoy Krugman's academic work, and the man is a world-class expert on international macroeconomics.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mark Twain revisited: starve the beast
In 'A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court', Mark Twain characterizes the relationship between the privileged class and the rest of the population in King Arthur's times as follows: 'sweat blood for them, starve that they might be fed, work that they might play, go naked that they might wear silk and jewels, pay taxes that they might be spared from paying them.' In other words, starve the beast. 5-0 out of 5 stars Keynesian Schmeysian
I hated most of Paul's economics, and, in fact, I hated his stated politics in this book even more, but the book is not about my personal opinions or judgements of Paul's political/economic opinions or his previous job.
