5-0 out of 5 stars Forget Moving The Cheese. This Is Your Life
About 30 years ago I read Alvin Toffler's FUTURE SHOCK wherein he described the rapidity of change and impact it would have on society and the individual in the coming decades. I have since observed in my personal and professional lives much of that dispossessing "shock" where the future meets the present. I could well have remained immobilized in the wake of recent life path switcheroos but for the wholly manageable techniques laid out in Paul and Sarah Edwards CHANGING DIRECTIONS. Clearly they have done their homework and have fashioned a plan of action that anyone can commence and complete, regardless of how stranded one may feel or uncertain the road may look. The book's life lessons allow individuals to reset the compass, fuel the engine, align the steering, inflate the tires and provide some fresh views of roads taken or not taken. Last year's WHO MOVED MY CHEESE provided a nice little fable and easy read for time-strapped rat-racers. But it might leave many feeling a bit undernourished in the how-to department. Paul and Sarah Edwards have set the table nicely with a six-course feast ("to go") of work and life-changing wisdom. Just desserts await those who faithfully follow their recommended menus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the read...
I found the book to be extremely helpful in identifying what it is you wish to change in your life, eliminating the fear and psychological blocks which stand in the way, and manifesting the dreams you've always had...yet often forgot were still locked inside, waiting to be fulfilled. The authors have written in a way which is immediately accessible, entertaining, and easily digested. There is a gentle urging which draws you closer to those "fantasies" many of us let go of, only to replace with a half-life of others' belief systems that ultimately have not led to our fulfillment."Changing Directions" gets you in touch with what you may have forgotten or forever released as "inappropriate" or "irresponsible choices"...and challenges you to once again embrace them as perhaps the only appropriate, responsible choice you can make if you are ever to achieve happiness. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Super Self - Inspirational Classic
I read a classic self-development book on my recent flight called, Super Self Doubling Your Personal Effectiveness by Charles J. Givens. Charles is one of the long-time motivational speakers and rags to riches type person that people like to read about. Often I find these people to be somewhat shallow but the basic message is right.
5-0 out of 5 stars SuperSelf is a super book/tape
Like his financial books, Charles Givens offers a no nonsense system for becoming your best. You will learn how to flatten your fears, generate goals and add several hours of productivity to your day with more free time for fun to boot.5-0 out of 5 stars Become ten feet tall and bullettproof!
Interesting that some people are surprised that Charles Givens produced this audio tape program and the book of the same name--SuperSelf; interesting because this is how Givens started way back in 1975 with his first company The Success Motivation Institute which was incredibly successful. SuperSelf is a program designed to take back control. To destroy the control others or events have over our emotions and the direction of our lives. To stop waiting for our ship to come in and go out and swim to it. Not to wait for things to happen but to make thing happen. Not to find ourselves, but to design ourselves. To take the action in our lives to make our dreams into reality.SuperSelf will show you how to design the rest of your life to become the best of your life and to live your dreams. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening and Practical
I bought this book as I found myself in a situation where I am having a job interview for the first time in the US. The book explains characteristics of the current US job market as well as how to deal withit. It is useful anyone in any stage of job hunting, and I cannot think ofa better book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners!
I didn't find this book very useful. I found the focus more for somechanging jobs rather than trying to get a job in the first place. It wouldbe a good reference for someone "stuck" in a job they don't like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Focus
This book will keep you focused on the end result getting the job you want.It will show you step by step instructions on what to do and when to do it.This book would also be a good guide to goal setting since it keeps you focused on the final goal getting the job you want. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the time
Thomas Moore meanders around various aspects of work based, it appears, almost exclusively on his personal life's experience. Some of his observations seem insightful, but he completely blows his credibility by long-winded and unsubstantiated diatribes about corporations, corporate managers and technology. These seem to be very naive, uninformed and based largely on the author's sentimental longing for a return to simpler times.Well, folks, that is just not going to happen. If he had spent time discussing on how to best adapt to these times, his observations might be more worthwhile. As it is, this two tape program is too pedantic for aninvestment of either your time or your money. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Fluff That Makes You Feel Good
Books like this do everything in their power to get your drive going. And every time I read one (which isn't often), I do feel good about myself. But in the end, I'm back on Earth a few days later.OK, I am sounding pathetic, but the truth is, there isn't a whole lot of practical advice here, just motivational anecdotes. To be frank, there is nothing wrong with that. It just needs more to distinguish itself.4-0 out of 5 stars To question your careeer, this is a must read
Get control of your career and your expectations of what career means in your life. This book does a great job of guiding you along as you question where you are in life and where you want to be.Redundant at times and interactive "take control books" usually don't appeal to me, but this one is an expection.

4-0 out of 5 stars I learned a thing or two.
As a racecar driver, I was drawn to the stories of building a successful race team. What I discovered was a well-structured text on the values necessary to be successful in any aspect of daily life, and a reminder of what is most important in life. This book certainly has religious tones, as Joe Gibbs thanks God for the opportunities and lessons given to him, but I believe these lessons are also valid in a secular context: Success in your career, finances, team building, personal relationships, moral choices, and health.4-0 out of 5 stars Not an autobiography, but his game plan for success
To reach the pinnacle of the ultra-competitive NFL (3 Super Bowl victories) is by itself a remarkable feat.To reach the pinnacle of the ultra-competitive NASCAR Winston Cup series (2 championships) is also remarkable.5-0 out of 5 stars God, Family, Career
Coach will help you get on the right track. No race car required. If you want help getting your life together, here it is!There are no big secrets, no get rich quick schemes.Truthfully many of us already have heard much of what Joe talks about.Unfortunately many of us weren't listening.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Relaxing Meditation
In the first part of this program, Michele Blood reminds us that wealth and success can be achieved by people on a spiritual path. The second part is a guided meditation that is oriented toward positive thinking. Her techniques of combining music with visualization are very powerful. Since using this and other of Michele's audio programs, I have actually had measureable improvement in my financial situation. I highly recommend this audio cassette program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Michele's Magnetic Visualization Program
I have been listening to Michele's tape for a few months now and I'm finding my negative thoughts gradually being replaced by positive ones. But most amazingly, unexpected money has begun to come to me.Mostly small amounts but enough to get my attention.I'm a believer!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Million Little Pieces - James Frey
This is a book written from the heart; filled with deep soul searching and honesty. I'm familiar with alcohol and drug addiction. I'm familiar with treatment centers. For those of you who know this road - this book touches home. For those of you who don't - don't be the first to throw that proverbial 'stone'. I've heard the reports of the 'untruths' regarding this publication. I read it anyway. Pain is an immense ocean. The depth of that ocean is different for each of us. This 'message' could be a gift for many; a starting point, a different way of looking at life and it's unkind lessons. This book offers an open hand to start you on a journey towards reality; toward clarity. For those of you who belittled this book - be it truth or sensationalism - be cautious! You never know what life holds for you or yours around the next bend. The information offered here, the idea of taking that 'first step towards recovery', the process of becoming HONEST with yourself and others, could well be the salvation for someone you love. Yep, it's got some rough language. Did you really expect anything else from a drug addict? Common! Gimme' a break! Get real with yourself! Keep an open mind and dig into this book! It's a good read!
5-0 out of 5 stars Frey touched my heart
I have always wondered what happens in a Treatment center. How do people stop being an addict? What do they do all day? What kind of people are in a treatment center? This book answers those questions and shows that there's hope for every addict. I think it's an excellent read. A gift to all addicts. It's exiting, I couldn't put it down and I thought about it quit a lot.

1-0 out of 5 stars As authentic as a daytime soap opera
I'd heard the buzz (both pro and con) and thought I'd take an independent read. I was dismayed with this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars self-promotion
If it didn't say "Harvey Mackay" on the cover, we wouldn't even mention this book, but ol' Swim with the Sharks Harvey is a brand unto himself. Pushing the Envelope is pure Mackay: breezy style, predictable advice, management insights as deep as a puddle. Still, expect it to sell. Mackay, like Zig Ziglar, can move books on name recognition alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will want to read the entire book!
Very insightful toward the elements of the mind that allow one to continue on their familiar path, over and over again, like the eveready bunny! The path that gets you where you have always been. This book does a fine job incommunicating breakthrough technology that can allow real change in ourabilty to set goals and not repeat the familiar. By understanding pastevents one can see where there habits and decisions have come from andthen, hopefully move on to a higher level. Great book for sales people andpeople looking for a way to access their next challenge!

5-0 out of 5 stars This self-help book delivers!
Started listening to the audio version of THE INTERNAL FRONTIER each morning on my way into work.Boy, did it make a difference in my day!It really made me take a look at myself and it helped me to see that some of the stuff I do really gets in my own way.At the same time, though, theauthor gives hope and help to make a change so I don't have to keep doingthe "same-old-same-old".1999 is going to be a better year, thanks to this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye opening, incisive, and substantial
For those who are truly motivated to pursue their dreams, whether personal or professional, this book is essential. Shechtman's premise is that we all have underlying emotional patterns - our "familiar," as he refers to it- that keep us stuck. To get un-stuck, he offers a six-step process forcreating new "familiars" which are in line with our goals. He alsostresses the importance of creating accountability groups to help us followthrough with our actions steps.I have taken a number of positive - anduncomfortable - action steps as a direct result of the book.Very wellwritten.Full of "beef." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Bedside Reading
Anna Deavere Smith knows what it's like--the struggle of the artist, the cold night of the soul when sometimes you feel punished for being a visionary, and she gets a lot of it down on paaper in this book of letters modelled to a certain degree on Rilke's famous LETTERS TO A YOUNG POET.She's seen it all in her multi-tasking career, and if she doesn't know it, she has a host of excellent friends to ask, everyone from Wynton Marsalis to Paul Van De Carr.James Baldwin, whom she met when she was just a struggling actor, told someone that she reminded him of "Lorraine" (Hansberry, the playwright who wrote A RAISIN IN THE SUN) and this overheard compliment sustained Anna Deavere Smith through many a disheartening audition. She's been on THE WEST WING and she played the mother in the movie of RENT.It's a bedside book you might give to any young friends you might have, or hope to influence. They'll read a few passages and take heart.
4-0 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 4.5) - A Must Read
Actress, teacher, and creator of an acclaimed series of one woman plays, Anna D. Smith gives some valuable incite about artist and their world. This book consists of a series of letters she writes to an imaginary young artist she calls BJ. But the letters are for artists of all ages and of any art form. She shares the rules of the road in the business of making and selling art.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Insiders Guide to Arts Industry
This was a fantastic read! Very accessable to all ages, various art forms, and levels of experience. Most books that talk about acting and making it in the arts don't neccessarily focus on some of the most key areas: integrity, presence, artistic vision and inspiration, staying connected to the world, and confidence. This book did. I am sure I will refer back to these chapters time and time again throughout my career as a performer! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very uplifting, great paradigm for living
It's difficult to give enough praise to what Stephen R. Covey does.I love reading his books and almost anyone will benefit from browsing through the different stories about how people had the courage to face their problems and change by engaging in positive behavior. To state the obvious, 'Living the 7 Habits' is an inspiring read.I would urge a bit of caution, however, in that the laboratory of the real world may not cooperate much with a person living the seven habits. On the other hand, Covey never says it's easy and he at least indirectly reminds the reader that incorporating the seven habits into one's life is an enormous amount of work.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Step to Work-At-Home Success
If you are serious about working at home or creating a career you can get excited about, this book is an absolute must! I have been providing work at home information and resources for over 7 years at Work-At-Home Success and this book is always the first thing I suggest to people who ask, "How do I get started working at home." Many people approach working at home with, "What can I sign up for that will pay me." But this is the wrong approach. Inventorying your skills, experience, interests, and passions and then designing a career you love is the best way to find success working at home. 4-0 out of 5 stars The details of Buffett's philosophy aren't explained
Ok, this is is so simple that even fifth graders can understand it. It is however, painfully superficial. Only the most rudimentry information is presented about Buffett. Buffett said in the book that you can't think of good ideas by reading/talking. I agree, and that makes the book pretty much worthless. Here is an example of where he is lacking in details. (no fault of the author). He talks about how he only buys stocks for the long term and actually wants a 100% tax on profits from stocks that were held less than a year or two. He doesn't explain the economic ramificiations clearly. He makes investing sound like buy it and forget it. I paraphrase something he said, "we buy a stock and leave it alone until we hear bad news, we don't care about the good news". I mean, come on, over simplification, can you really believe that? He thinks that stock price directly correlate with company's fundamentals. I agree, but uh, long term is a long time. Ok just to sum it up, this book is really more of a biography than a 'investment philosophy+tips for investing'5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for the begginer investor......... :-)
I think that this is an excellent book for anyone wanting to learn how the worlds most famous investor made his riches or anyone wanting to follow in his footsteps.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Undoubtedly, the best in the genre...Must-Read for all busy professionals!
Just a few years after I have started my strategy consulting business (as well as my own book-store) in the early 90's, I spotted a review of this book, 'The Personal Efficiency System (PEP)', in Success Magazine. I bought it immediately & have reread it many times. A few years later, came the second book, The 'High-Tech Personal Efficiency System' by the same author. I bought it immediately too & have read - & refered to - it several times.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to organize your computer
The author uses a great approach: first get your low-tech materials organized, and then move onto the high-tech materials. There is a parallel structure applied to both paper and electronic resources, which is really great for organizing.Great book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good for computer novices, Bad for computer-savvy people
If you already have Gleeson's "The Personal Efficiency Program : How to Get Organized to Do More Work in Less Time," don't buy this.It has pretty much the same information. It's not "high-tech" atall. Most of the book is like a Computer 101 class. I'm quitedisappointed, since I was looking for ways to organize my electronicresources, NOT "how do I create a folder in Win95." ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good thesis but development could have been better
Blaine Lee is a vice-president of Franklin Covey--a consulting and empowerment company best known for "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People."This book addresses those who want to increase their "power"/effectiveness as it encourages them to develop "principle-centered leadership."
5-0 out of 5 stars A book about choice........
This book was not written for folks who are dealing with chronic illness. But every person who is dealing with a chronic illness should read it. It is so easy to fall into the victim paradigm of illness. This book will show you, you are not a victim unless you choose to be and how to cope in a positive way.Blaine Lee is an awesome teacher!
4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Motivational
The author tells us, "...as you improve, your capacity to help others will also improve." The material in this book can be a step in that process as it is filled with practical doable ideas. An emphasis on improving the quality of life comes out as the focus is on strengthening relationships.
