Editorial Review

Personal-finance author and lecturer Robert Kiyosaki developed his unique economic perspective through exposure to a pair of disparate influences: his own highly educated but fiscally unstable father, and the multimillionaire eighth-grade dropout father of his closest friend. The lifelong monetary problems experienced by his "poor dad" (whose weekly paychecks, while respectable, were never quite sufficient to meet family needs) pounded home the counterpoint communicated by his "rich dad" (that "the poor and the middle class work for money," but "the rich have money work for them"). Taking that message to heart, Kiyosaki was able to retire at 47. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not much to learn
I found his advises similar with what I knew since my childhood (save money, invest to bring you more money, don't spend much, real estate is good, etc). It does not give tips on what "rich" people know (at least I suspect they would know more). Like how and where to get valuable information. How to buy stocks, what to look for, nothing of that. May be inspirational book for some, a poor kid who became rich... Tells 100 times the same things, annoying at some point.
2-0 out of 5 stars "Good" Salesman; QuestionableBook
RICH DAD, POOR DAD seems contradictory in more than one way:economically and philosophically.Probably, Kiyosaki's most inviting, yet deceptive, chapters is Eight, "Overcoming obstacles."Here, he is at his most fervent; one can feel he believes what he is writing is true. But it is not necessarily true about life itself.
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great in the Powertalk Series
Using the mentality of "henry1983" all the great classics ever written by the greatest authors that ever lived deserve to be rated "one star" because "you can find them in the library" as if the rating system has anything to do with where someone obtained the content! Books here are reviewed by people who *read the book* regardless of whether they got it from the library, a local bookstore, as a gift, or at Amazon. It's almost embarrassing that this needs to be explained to what I assume is an adult--so this person may have some kind of ulterior agenda. The very fact that he rated it one star for that reason and then stated in his writing that it actually deserves 5 stars, means he invalidated his own rating and should therefore be removed (and take this paragraph along with it).
5-0 out of 5 stars Why buy?
Hey Henry from Hong Kong...News flash...copying this tape set is illegal!! That is why you should buy it. Besides it is a great set of interviews.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
Nice job from Tony, but Prechter lacks deeper knowledge of the basics of finance and macro-economy to be able to make such affirmations. Not to mention that he over-simplifies all matters to make and re-make his point. Of course, his pessimistic view may still prove to be right and then he will be called a guru again. But how long has been since he declared these points and nothing happened? Some months, right? As he also agrees, TIMING is key to make or not to lose money on financial markets, so to me this book is 3 stars: not bad, but no good either. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Life is to live...
I think deep thinking people tend to be unhappy because they're not living life. They're idealizing and rationalizing life. Some of the concepts here may be good, but reading this book will leave you feeling empty, even if you agree. It's better to spend the time living your life than reading these kinds of deep books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give this book as a present for anyone you care about
The more you read this book and go deeper into the principles of Covey the more you discover yourself and others. For many people reading Covey's book or listening to him speak literally changes their lives. This is a powerful and effective recipe for success indeed and highly recommended for people in training.
5-0 out of 5 stars All Time Classic
This book is an exceptionally well thought, intellectual work. I admire Mr. Covey for his in-depth analysis of human relationships and the new concepts he introduced like emotional bank account, paradigm shift, and writing a family mission statement. I truly believe that it is extremely important for everyone to read this book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

We're constantly negotiating in our lives, whether it's convincing the kids to do their homework or settling million-dollar lawsuits. For those who need help winning these battles, Roger Fisher has developed a simple and straightforward five-step system for how to behave in negotiations. Narrated soothingly by NPR announcer Bob Edwards, Fisher adds the meaty portions of the material with a sense of playfulness. The blend of voices makes this tape easy to listen to, especially the real-life negotiating scenarios, in which negotiating examples are given. This is a must-have tape for every businessperson's car. (Running time: one hour, one cassette) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Managing Conflict using Getting to Yes, what a book!
Few books stand up from the crowd when we talk about conflict and negotiation. This book does and it serves companies a great deal to make it a required reading for professionals. When I recommend this book to trainees in all my training seminars people think I am getting paidcommission from the publisher :) hmmmmmmay be I should. Combine this book with 48 laws of power and turn your engine of influence on. Add NLP on top of it and guarantee winning every reasonable deal.Conflict, Power and Influence is it !

4-0 out of 5 stars The content of this book is sound; however
First, a testimonial. When I was three-quarters of the way through, I had a whammy of a week.On Monday I negotiated in a job interview, Tuesday I negotiated with my landlady, and Wednesday I negotiated with my manager over new job routines (the cause of my activities on Monday). I found the methods, strategies, approaches and techniques in the book IMMEDIATELY helpful in these situations.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!
This great book should be on the desk of every stressed out business executive. It brilliantly describes what it takes to be in a peak state of mind when you need to be.There is no question that business people as wellas everyone should train their bodies to get their minds in top shape.Thisbook illustrates that with great information about diet, exercise, and properattitude.A wise investment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacking new Insight to an age-old problem
I waited in anticipation for this book to arrive. Much hype had been made about this new research and the 21 day plan.Business men and women stuggle to balance work and home-life, and the foundation of this book isright on. If we loose weight, drink more water and exercise we will havemore energy for both. The problem with this book is that it says verylittle more.I found myself brousing through the book looking for newideas to give me some boost. The book does have some excellent chapters onhow to deal with stress in the work place. In fact, this book is worthbuying just for these two chapters. However, for those of us who read selfhelp books on a daily basis, you might be looking for more.

5-0 out of 5 stars At the Top of Your Game
Finally - a book that delivers on its promise to help you get to the top of your game, to help you achieve maximal performance levels in life - and does so using a common sense approach that integrates experience, study andscience with focus and commitment. The key is training like an athletewhether its following an exercise or nutrition program or developing apositive attitude. What a refreshingly realistic concept in this "apill a day takes the fat away" world!Through Dr. Groppel'sconvincing clarity, it all makes perfect sense. And you don't have to bein the business arena to benefit from the principles of THE CORPORATEATHLETE.Maximizing performance can be a goal that crosses age, gender andoccupational or vocational boundaries. But what makes this book stand outfor me is Dr. Groppel's holistic approach - completing the palate offitness by incorporating the physical, mental and emotional with thespiritual. It takes courage to take spirituality out of its politicallycorrect closet and plop it onto the Board Room table, to make it a keycomponent of performance enhancement.Could it be that the growth ofcourage, confidence, conviction and character is a natural end product ofone's development into the ultimate corporate athlete? I am convinced, after reading the book, that this is the case. ... Read more

The transformation from a manufacturing-based economy to one that's all about service has been well documented. Today it's estimated that nearly 75 percent of Americans work in the service sector. Instead of producing tangibles--automobiles, clothes, and tools--more and more of us are in the business of providing intangibles--health care, entertainment, tourism, legal services, and so on. However, according to Harry Beckwith, most of these intangibles are still being marketed like products were 20 years ago.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Selling the Invisible: The Art of War
Harry Beckwith's Selling the Invisible reminds me of Sun Tzu's The Art of War in that it is not so much a manual on its subject as it is a primer on how to think about its subject. Knowing nothing of service marketing when I started to read it, I found many of its precepts counterintuitive (selling relationships?) but with the numerous examples aided by my own observation of the things Beckwith talks about, my eyes were opened in a way Sun Tzu's first readers must have been. Beckwith understands the core of service marketing is the service itself and focusing on the consumer's needs, not clever marketing designed to separate the customer from his cash or dazzle him with an empty sales pitch for unwanted products (take notice, Apple). This relationship to the customer and understanding his or her needs defines the successful business and indeed IS the successful business. Beckwith illustrates this with many practical strategies relevant to any service business.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Book!
Terrible is all I can say. This author breaks every rule he suggests to you.The introduction is boring. It is small story chapters with a bold sentence or two at the end. These are the principles he is suggesting. You can read these bold sentences in less than 30 minutes.Don't bother to buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for anyone involved in marketing and selling
This book is a real page-turner. (My copy is dog-eared with notes written in margins and post-it notes stuck on 11 different pages.)Harry Beckwith is a marketing genius. One quote I have used over and over again in presentations:"People who say, 'The businesses in our industry are basically alike' should recognize a human trait.People feel a need to justify their buying decisions, so they look for differences upon which to base their decisions. What does this mean to a company in an industry of lookalikes? It means that the more alike two products are, the more important each difference becomes."So very true.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to get the monkeys (work units) of others off your back
The monkey in this case is in reference to the phrase, "getting the monkey off your back." A monkey is a work unit that needs to be done, and the manager in question is someone who takes on the monkeys of his underlings. Instead of delegating the responsibility to people under him, he does the job. The consequence is that he is putting in a full day on Saturday while his underlings are out playing golf. Finally fed up with this situation, he decides to truly take charge and keep the monkeys where they belong.
5-0 out of 5 stars How to delegate but not abdicate
Just as when parents allow a child to get a pet, then end up changing the hamster papers, walking the dog at midnight in a thunderstorm, and taking out the kitty litter; so do some managers spend all their time taking care of their employee's "monkeys". This book uses humor to teach managers the art of delegation, handing the monkeys back to their owners and giving them the responsibility of caring and feeding. But that is not all. Most managers will profit greatly by reading the techniques of monkey hand-off. This is especially true if you've ever been accused of micro-management. However some managers are great at the handing off the monkeys and then forget to followup on their condition. This book also talks about follow-up check-ups and insurance policies to make sure that monkeys are healthy. As employees become better and better monkey tenders, then less follow-up and insurance is needed. However a manager does need to continue periodic check-ups because he is ultimately responsible for the project.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great public speaking in one easy lesson?
In a single short cassette, containing the bare essence of the book, Roger Ailes distills the advice he has given countless politicians and business people about communicating. His advice is not terribly complex: be yourself, be interesting, be likable. The book title tells it all: you -- the totality of who you are, speech, gestures, tone, persona -- is as important to the mesasge you convey as the words you utter. The book makes perfect sense. But the problem is that speakers often don't know what it is about theiemselves that makes their speech unpersuasive. That's why folks like Ailes are in buisiness, to provide the objective feedback that breaks through the curtain of self-denial that many of us weave around ourselves.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
The book is very well written and the content are absolutely useful. A must-have to strengthen your communication and leadership skills.

3-0 out of 5 stars Read this book before appearing on the O'Reilly Factor
I read this book very carefully, particularly the section on talking to the media, and I took every word to heart.I made sure when I went home to greet the throng of reporters waiting for me at my apartment (after I returned home from my temporary Accountant position) that I would take control of the situation and not let the news media bully me around.I immediately addressed the first reporter, simultaneously addressing the question and taking control of the situation by firmly stating "our performance has been stellar, our revenues have increased markedly and so has our marketshare, making our company an even more attractive target for institutional investors..."

4-0 out of 5 stars Find out what type of person you are when confronted with change.
This book can identify to all categories of people and how they react to change.I think at some point I have played all roles when someone has moved my cheese.I think I should read this book on an annual basis to remind myself of which mouse I would like to be.

3-0 out of 5 stars Confrontational, enlightening but too simple
This book uses two mice and two little people who look like mice to make a serious point. How do you respond to change? In Who Moved My Cheese?, we see those who immediately seek a new viable option, those who move forward only when a situation is life threatening, and those who refuse to budge.Isn't this what we see in everyday life?My biggest concern about this book is that the question provided to deal with the fear that stops us from moving forward is "What would I do if I wasn't afraid?" This is an example of repressive coping, and does not deal with the reason for the fear, and does not resolve the fear.To learn how to best deal with troublesome feelings that stop us from making the most of our lives,I recommend Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self.I recommend each of these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good slap in the face!
This book is an excellent quick read for everyone. The analogies utilized remind people how to properly, and improperly deal with change and are superb.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok~ but I think the Keirsey Temperment Test is more accurate - and cheaper.
This book has its good points. If anything, it helps you put into words what you wantfrom a supervisor, but it is not very accurate. The online test does not account for a difference between when 2 of their options are both exactly like you, or if they don't describe you at all. This messes up the results, and it did not describe me very well. I am not just in denial. I have taken a lot of personality type tests, like the Keirsey Temperment sorter and have a pretty good idea of my strengths. So, although this book is pretty good in making you understand the importance of incouraging your strengths, it still leaves you wondering about how you fit in to their terminology.

2-0 out of 5 stars Collection of condescending cliches stressing the obvious
I found this book (I listened to the audio version) to be a major disappointment. The tips offered by Carnegie may have appeared insightful and provocative to assembly line supervisors back in the 1930s, but in the more enlightened 21st century a lot of his "good advice" comes across as irritatingly simplistic and sometimes even downright condescending and offensive. It's so easy and straightforward: Be nice to people, remember their first names, always be positive and you will instantly be liked by everyone. Overly obvious and trite - hardly the kind of stuff that would find its way into today's Harvard Business Review. Adding to the sense of irritation is the voice of the reader who tries to sound upbeat and optimistic, giving the whole performance the hollow feel of amateurish propaganda better suited to "Pleasantville" than to "Wall Street".
4-0 out of 5 stars Back to Basics
This little book is recommended reading in the company I currently work for and unlike some of the other recommendations, Fish and Moving My Cheese for instance, this has some value.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great "Beginners Guide"--Well Worth It.
As a 20 year veteran business consultant I strongly recommend this one because it presents the "meat and potatoes" of leadership.I personally am tired of all the "fad" books out there trying to put a spin on leadership when what is important are the essential skills of leadership. This book captures those skills and is great for a new leader.

4-0 out of 5 stars Analyzing the Communication Skills of the Opposite Sex
I feel that this book was very informational and useful with many instances in my life. It really gave me an insight to the reasons why people act how they do, and it made me comprehend my boyfriend and friends more. I have misunderstood them many times, and after reading parts of this book, I have realized what went wrong. 1-0 out of 5 stars Yakk...
First, it would be nice to explain, that this book is targeted to (a) women, (b) women suffering from the lack fo self-confidence, (c) womensuffering from the lack of self-confidence and comfortable with blaming menfor sexism on a working place. It's just too much time spent on sexesrelations instead of real communications problems. Of course, difference ofmale and female styles of communication is a problem, you have to keep inmind, but this is not the ONLY problem. Reading the review on a boook Iexpected advice on improving my communication skills, not to hear a bunchof regular feministic stream of accusations of the business world. It'sjust misleading, useless and very unpleasant. So if you want feministpropaganda, this book is for you, if you really want improve your skills,go somewhere else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good explanation of male/female communication differences.
This is a useful, interesting, provocative description of differences between men's and women's speech behaviors.Tannen takes an essentially socio-cultural stance in explaining the reasons for these differences.Notonly does she present coherently her ideas, her speech is crisp andanimated; thus, it is a delight to listen to her. This audio is anexcellent introduction to Tannen's work on this subject.I ask studentsenrolled in my Gender and Communication course to listen to this editedtape in lieu of purchasing the book, as this proves to be an efficientalternative to reading the entire book. For instructors similarlyinclined, I recommend purchasing two or three copies to be placed onreserve in the university library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great self-esteem booster
This is a great collection of tips and stories to help alter the way we think of ourselves. These tapes give my self-esteem a boost and make the world a better place. The formula of Experience + Response = Outcome is just one of the great ways this tape influences posative thinking. The only down side is that this product isn't sold as a CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jack Canfield is my motivational role model
Jack Canfield is my motivational role model and for good reason. Jack is a warm and lovable fellow who believes in people--to do better and be better. I love to listen to these tapes over and over again. They are really motivating. And by the way he's funny too! Zev Saftlas, Author of Motivation That Works

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Self-Help Tapes
I first bought this set of tapes several years ago at an education seminar and it was a valuable investment.Jack Canfield is caring, understanding, knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor. He comes across as a 'real' person who uses teaching examples from his own life and degrees of self-disclosure that help create a 'trust' atmosphere for the listener. He has a speaking manner that puts you at ease and makes you want to listen to everything he has to say.Self-esteem, self-confidence and relating to other people is who we are every day and he helps improve this with techniques for developing and strengthening our 'inner selves'.I've listened to these tapes every 6 months for the last 7 yrs. and I listen to them whenever I am going through a really stressful time. They are uplifting and healing. ... With first-chapter allusions to martial arts, "flow," "mind like water," and other concepts borrowed from the East (and usually mangled), you'd almost think this self-helper from David Allen should have been called

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good ideas, but not the whole story
I've been trying to organize my life for over 20 years, and have read innumerable books on the subject. While each one has offered something to add to the puzzle, none of them has told the whole story.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not written with Emotional Intelligence
The author of this book was obviously not applying "emotional intelligence" principles when writing this book. The points were all there and really proved why emtional intelligence is important, but it was just not done in a good manner.I do not typically shy away from long books, but this one was impossible. It was assigned to me and about 30 other people in my organization (we were to discuss and present ideas found inside the book), and can I tell you that no one finished it because of repetitious and dreadful writing?Just know that to be successful, you HAVE to exhibit emotional intelligence and be a intuitive, kind and generally good person to work with. If you don't believe me, save yourself the time/energy and buy the Cliffs notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tool of Necessity
A must read for trainers, trainees and people managers. Goleman's work provides a benchmark for training and development professionals. For everyone it provides a template for increasing one's self-awareness and operational effectiveness within for profit, non-profit and familyenvironments. Nothing fancy, just a plain old common sense appproach backed by documented research and experiences. As a mentor to a significant number of students and professionals, I have recommended this text without hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional + interpersonal skills = Success!
This book simply showed that success is not just dependent on cognitive abilitites but more importantly on emotional competence.
