5-0 out of 5 stars Follow the Roadmap and you are bound to succeed
The Roadmap to Success is by far the best motivational book I have ever read. It was the first book that I have read by Maxwell, and since then I have read four others. He teaches us a new way to think about success. Clearly stated success is: knowing your purpose, growing to reach your potential, and sowing seeds to help others. It is amazing how much better you perform and how much more you enjoy life when you view success through this framework. If you have been successful so far in your life, this book will help reinforce any doubts you have about your choices and reaffirm the actions you have taken. If you are committed to growth and development then this book is a great start to helping you put aside your fears to get the most out of your life. If you are closed minded, resistant to change and generally a pessimistic person this book is not for you. While those people that continue to make excuses for their failures or the way their life turned out will never succeed, those who have the right mindset and follow Maxwell's advise will surely go far in life and reap the beiefits and joys of success.

5-0 out of 5 stars John finishes his book with a ? "What did you like best?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
Yeah I was forced to read this by my boss...but it was quick and worthwhile.I am an experienced manager but I still picked up some valuable tips. This is worth while reading- short, to the point, and informative

5-0 out of 5 stars Universally applicable!
This is one of my favorite books. It is geniusly simple, respectful and powerful. I was surprised to find out that I can easily apply the 3 principles in almost every relationship. So many people around deserve to be praised and taught a lesson and it is very important HOW you will do it because the final result can be very positive or just the opposite. It is a very valuable book which is very well written and is a fast read. I also highly recommend the other books from the One Minute Manager series because every book has a lot to offer and they will be especially helpful if you are in a business environment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stay away from the abridged book on tape -- it's badly dated
The abridged book on tape version (ISBN 0-694-51801-8) mostly covers market conditions in the early 1970s. (It's apparently an abridgement done in 1986 of a book Graham wrote in the early 1970s before his death in 1976). Yes, there is some historic interest here, but not enough of Benjamin Graham's timeless advice on investing. I recommend finding another version of Graham's work, unless you're an economic historian researching the early 1970s.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on investing ever written
This is a must read for any person serious about investing (ie not gambling) in the stock market. The book is rather easy to read. Graham was an investor but also a teacher (at Columbia). He has a good balance between technical yet simple explanation. If you know absolutely nothing about the stock market and financials, you may still find it a bit obscure at time, but you should probably not invest directly anyway (at least not right away). For everyone else, read it.5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent Investor
Intelligent Investor is the single greatest book ever written on investing.Look at Ben Graham's track record, all of several of his students (including Warren Buffett) have also built foutunes using his advice. ... Read more

Editorial Review

It's no secret that most mutual funds fail to beat the performance of the S&P 500. And if the pros can't beat the averages, it's not unreasonable to assume that most individual investors can't, either. Why? According to Robert Hagstrom, author of Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Read Buffett, don't waste time with Hagstrom
I bought it, by the title mentioning W.B.
1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time
Go right to the heart of the matter with Graham and Dodd's "Security Analysis" if you want to know how Buffett started.Hagstrom's book is a poorly executed fifth grader's book report on the primary investing philosophy of Buffett.Don't waste your money here. You'll regret it.This doesn't even scratch the surface of relevant information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Light, enjoyable and enlightening
This book presents Buffet's and Hagstrom's portfolio allocation methods.I say Hagstrom's because I think that much of Buffet's allocation methodology remains between Buffet's ears -- and not that of Hagstrom the author. Also, I believe Buffet is more opportunistic; he acts decisively when opportunities present themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars The tools to succeed in business in the 21st century
Wow!
4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD NEWS FOR RENAISSANCE SOULS!
I am so thrilled that someone of Pink's reputation and expertise has put the free agent's role in our economy front and center. This is great news for Renaissance Souls: people who prefer variety and combination to concentrating on just one thing. Why?Because, as Pink shows so well, being a free agent is very different from sitting in one cubicle doing one thing as you (theoretically) climb the (now almost falling down) corporate ladder.Free agents have to know their material, of course, but they also have to enjoy applying what they know to a variety of different situations. In addition, free agents need to be comfortable wearing several different hats.Who is going to spread the word about what they have to offer if they don't?Who is going to be sure that the finances are in order if they don't?Even if they hire accountants or p.r. folks, they still are the one, and only one, making the final decisions and being sure what needs doing has actually been done.As a coach specializing in life design for people with too many passions to pick just one (read Renaissance Souls,) I have already been recommending Dr. Barbara Reinhold's book, FREE TO SUCCEED: Designing the Life You Want In the New Free Agent Economy. Now I will add Daniel Pinks new contribution as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A how-it-is, not a how-to
What this book isn't:(1) a guide to how to succeed as a free agent, (2) an objective, scientific study of self-employed workers, or (3) a statistical analysis of social trends.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cassette version used
Some value for everyone.Half of the information is only appropriate for a professional speaker. I will not listen a second time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wow...bad
Or at least not what I was looking for...but based on all the other reviews here, I thought it was. This book has a very limited audience in mind, namely those who are giving "speeches", not just regular, everyday presentations and meetings. The name of the book is deceiving, and so are the reviews. The first chapter is the only one that is moderately worthwhile if you're actually looking for tips on becoming more confident.Otherwise, it is simply a laundry list of ways to give big speeches; not helpful at all to the average joe who works in corporate america and just wants to feel more confident.I realize this is difficult to teach in a book, but the other reviewers gave the impression that I might garner some tidbits on this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
I facilitate new hire orientations at my job regularly and this book was excellent and very informative. I bought the book because I wanted to be learn all that I could about public speaking since part of my new job responsibilities required me to stand up before an audience. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good mix of factoids, inspiration and leadership pointers
Building on the successful formula of his earlier work, author John C. Maxwell (The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership) has delineated 17 "laws" for managers who want to develop successful teams. That number may be arbitrary, but Maxwell successfully uses his laws as a springboard to weave together inspiring tales from Navy Seals, mountain climbers, Colin Powell, George Washington, Jimmy Carter, major league coaches and others into punchy chapters that any aspiring leader can use. This book provides the right mix of factoids, inspiration and leadership pointers to make it a bestseller. Even better, coaches and leaders who use these tips should be able to build better teams. We recommend this book to coaches, mentors and team leaders.

2-0 out of 5 stars The "laws" are indisputable for a reason
From the favorable reviews, I assumed that this would be an informative book. However, this is not the case.I learned very little in the course of reading the book, and here is why:

4-0 out of 5 stars Good General Principles Trust Your Workers
These are good business principles to live by. Involve your workers, and better yet, make them feel like they are a vital part of your organization. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Leadership Book Worth Reading
Flight of the Buffalo discusses the fact that the business world has changed. To stay competitive business leaders must also change and change the way our businesses operate. The only things that are constant are that change will continue to impact the way business is done and the speed of this change will continue to increase. How do you satisfy (retain) that current customer, or acquire that next customer in this continually changing competitive environment?First, as a leader you must learn to learn and learn at a faster rate. The foundation for all change is learning. Second, it is important that changes be made to the organizational culture in order to accomplish the changes required by the organization to allow employees to lead. The culture needs to change to remove the mentality that we are all victims because we have no control over any of the tasks required to make the customer happy, to one in which we all have ownership of the problems our companies/customers face. There are a number of obstacles that stand in our way as leaders. Many leaders within our companies hesitate to empower their employees and give them responsibilities for fear that they will not have anything to do themselves. Anyone who struggles with relinquishing control and trusting their coworkers to share in the responsibilities of the organization should read this book.Read more

I enjoyed reading this book.Al was definitley a loveable S.O.B..The man really built an empire in spite of all the critics that believed an National paper was a ridiculous idea.He did it with style, grace, and charm. The book also reminded me of an old saying "every failure plants a seed of an equivalent success."

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Business Book YTD in my life.
I read this book a few years ago- made my son read it last year and have read it again recently highlighting what applies to my ambitions (in service). What a great reflection Sam Walton is of the opportunities of our country. When I speak to young people about money- I love telling them Sam Walton was a paper boy starting at age 11, worked and paid his way through college during the depression delivering papers. I began working at 11 for 35 cents an hour saving $286 my first summer, significant experience....America is a great place with great opportunities and people to serve. This book reflects infinite opportunities we have and share with the world. It should be required reading in high school and again in college, current affairs on a productive topic like business.

4-0 out of 5 stars with a co writer, but still good
Made in America had a co writer- John Huey, and that usually makes me strongly not like the style of a book. However, I think Huey and Sam did a great job on this one. It's engaging without being pedantic, and the interspersed quotes made it hum right along.
4-0 out of 5 stars a handy book
it is a simple book, but provides a lot of deep insight about business. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I really liked it !
It was a very good book for someone who needs to build confidence when dealing with people. I enjoyed it and have read many books on meeting people and getting over shyness. If you want to meet women and are shy there is a great book called 'How To 'Pick Up' Beautiful Women' by John Eagan. It has helped me get over my shyness with women. Which is somening you can not put a price on.
5-0 out of 5 stars A self-improvement classic!
If your career or volunteer activities require you to interact withlots of different types of people and, more specifically, to get them to do what you want them to do, read this book!Lest there be any confusion, Giblin does not suggest that his readers manipulate, badger or cojole people into doing things; rather, he teaches how to change oneself so that people will want to see things your way.H.t.H.C.a.P.i.D.w.P preaches self-improvement, not strong-arming.
4-0 out of 5 stars Old but relevant

5-0 out of 5 stars This book helped me turn my life around
Brian Tracy is one of my all time favorite authors. Maximum Achievement was the first book I read in the self-development genre more than ten years ago. The book is packed with practical information and Tracy knows his human psychology. He answers questions like: What drives human beings? What motivates us? Why don't we take action on knowledge we already have?
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book and resource
I highly recommend this book.It is packed with a lot of good information and insights and is really uplifting, but on a very practical and pragmatic level. It doesn't give you a lot of BS or vague general platitudes, and does provide a lot of useful stuff in my opinion. And it covers a pretty broad range of topics, on how to be more effective.I keep it handy to refer back to and re-read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I've ever read-seriously

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Ideas Impractically Presented
In my attempts to learn from people that I consider effective leaders, I've noticed that they seem to share several characteristics. However, I've never been able to adequately summarize these qualities in as clear a manner as John Maxwell does in Thinking For A Change.Maxwell isolates the thinking traits of successful individuals and provides examples on how application of these traits can improve a situation or a life.To put it simply, I've never read a more concise synopsis of the thought characteristics that distinguish the successful from the unsuccessful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thinking for a change
This book is very insightful and helped me to see things in a different perspective. I believe it has helped me to think differently and that it has helped me become a more effective and productive leader at work. I highly recommend it to all who want to increase their leadership abilities and learn new strategies and thinking skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars It Can Help You think
John Maxwell is a prolific author in the area of leadership. While this book applies to any leader, it has applications much broader than that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Power of Full Engagement - The Choice is Yours
An extremely practical guide to full engagement through the management of personal energy. The book explains in detail how to get the most of life through the choices we make.It is heaped with case studies to illustrate the dynamics of personal energy. It provides a holistic approach to getting the most of life through an awareness of physical energy, emotional energy, mental energy and spiritual energy. An easy read that will engage anyone interested in living a fuller life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rest has had a bad rap!
This book reinforces the importance of rest. The authors speak of managing energy rather than time and eschew the benefits of taking strategic breaks all day long. When I do this, I am more productive, more energized. When I plow through a day from morning to night without a break, my ability to complete tasks lag. The Power of Full Engagement explained why this was so and gave me helpful coping strategies to manage my wavering energy levels.

4-0 out of 5 stars A different perspective. Yet quite knowledgeable and helpful!
First of all, let's see whether you can accept the ideas below:-

4-0 out of 5 stars It helped me
I dont know the information it has is basic or advanced (because I'm not a sales guy) but I do know that it helped me a lot. I like the style of the book. Very very direct. Not like other books where author write the whole chapter for explaining one concept, beating the bushes. But it contains a lot of tips with enough explaination. I really like this book and will definitely recommend others. Again, I'm not a sales guy but starting my own business.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is what gives Salespeople a bad name!
In a nutshell, this book is awful. This guy is so clich, I am surprised he has been successful.I have taken many legitimate sales courses that have taught me great things about dealing honestly and candidly with customers, but Tom Hopkins suggests a different approach. He espouses that, when faced with rejection, you should accuse the customer of not trusting you or your companies integrity and to "guilt" them into giving in.This is NOT how professional salespeople become successful.Give me a break, buddy!Go back to selling steak knives door-to-door.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe every reviewer rating like the ones below this
I purchased this cassette based on the "consumer's review" from Chicago below.I usually trust customer reviews because when I write a review I am as honest and hopefully as helpful as I can be.So that I provide insight for someone thinking about making a purchase.Read more
