Editorial Review

We're constantly negotiating in our lives, whether it's convincing the kids to do their homework or settling million-dollar lawsuits. For those who need help winning these battles, Roger Fisher has developed a simple and straightforward five-step system for how to behave in negotiations. Narrated soothingly by NPR announcer Bob Edwards, Fisher adds the meaty portions of the material with a sense of playfulness. The blend of voices makes this tape easy to listen to, especially the real-life negotiating scenarios, in which negotiating examples are given. This is a must-have tape for every businessperson's car. (Running time: one hour, one cassette) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Managing Conflict using Getting to Yes, what a book!
Few books stand up from the crowd when we talk about conflict and negotiation. This book does and it serves companies a great deal to make it a required reading for professionals. When I recommend this book to trainees in all my training seminars people think I am getting paidcommission from the publisher :) hmmmmmmay be I should. Combine this book with 48 laws of power and turn your engine of influence on. Add NLP on top of it and guarantee winning every reasonable deal.Conflict, Power and Influence is it !

4-0 out of 5 stars The content of this book is sound; however
First, a testimonial. When I was three-quarters of the way through, I had a whammy of a week.On Monday I negotiated in a job interview, Tuesday I negotiated with my landlady, and Wednesday I negotiated with my manager over new job routines (the cause of my activities on Monday). I found the methods, strategies, approaches and techniques in the book IMMEDIATELY helpful in these situations.
4-0 out of 5 stars better than expected
this book was boring at first but the real meat is close to the end.I think this book not only be used on business but also with friends.I've tried using it to talk w/ people and it works.A good read and good asset! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Raving Fans: A revolutionary Approach To Customer Ser
I just read a few of the reviews for this book, Raving Fans that were less than satisfactory.I must say to those who thought after reading this book that it was pointless, simplistic to the point of insulting, disappointing, or over the top, that it's just that exact mentality the whole book is based on.I really hate to color one gender in this fashion but it unfortunately is true, usually it's a man who can't possibly see that the solutions to most customer service problems are just that simplistic. It may seem corny, over the top, or maybe simplistic but this book clearly addresses the problem with customer service today, in that no one cares or is brave enough to venture returning to true customer oriented values, or brave enough to be different. It's all about squeezing that dollar for more than what it's worth, instead of investing that dollar to develop long term loyal customers.Customers that will go out of their way to do business with a provider if the provider cares enough about them to listen to them and give above what they are expecting.I know what I am talking about, I am a customer, and at best I only occasionally see a flicker ofbarely satisfactory customer service actions with the business's I donate my dollars to, but for the most part my customer service experiences are definitely a "No-Customer-Service kinda Customer Service World". Not only am I a customer but I am a customer service provider as well.I have always performed my job with the Raving Fan mentality; I just didn't know what it was called. It's good to know that my work reputation is directly related to providing "Raving Fan" type Customer service. It's too bad that the majority of business's out there are managed by the mentality, that it's all about the dollar and the customer is privileged to have me as a provider.

4-0 out of 5 stars To all the nay sayers.....
See ya, would hate to be your cio/ceo.It's just that simple.change is good, if you don't, bye.i extrapalated the simple concepts to help build the best suite of teams' of employees.Something like i have a vision for my team of managers, and part of that vision is what they need from me, they in turn need to develop their own vision of their team which includes what their team members need from them.By building that type of relationship/team, we can really provide an exceptional product.
4-0 out of 5 stars raving fan
Raving fans is an excellent book for those that are trying to improve their businesses customer service and how the customer is viewed.Although at times it may seem over the top, from a cost analysis basis, even if a business cannot afford the costly improvements, focusing on low to little cost improvements can radically improve your business alone. ... Editorial Review

With the stock market breaking records almost daily, leaving longtime market analysts shaking their heads and revising their forecasts, a study of the concept of risk seems quite timely. Peter Bernstein has written a comprehensive history of man's efforts to understand risk and probability, beginning with early gamblers in ancient Greece, continuing through the 17th-century French mathematicians Pascal and Fermat and up to modern chaos theory. Along the way he demonstrates that understanding risk underlies everything from game theory to bridge-building to winemaking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ingenious ways to measure probability
"Against the Gods; The remarkable story of risk," is a world-class history of ingenious ways to measure probability.Author Peter L. Bernstein approaches the subject of risk/uncertainty with patience and unfolds a stirring tale of how civilization dicovered ways to improve the understanding of probability.
3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
It has interesting parts. Good for those looking for a recreational reading rather than a good manual for beginners. On this count, I recommend Barboianu's "Understanding and Calculating the Odds".

4-0 out of 5 stars A good non-mathematical introduction to economic risk
For people who are interested in the economic side of risk (mainly stock), rather than the probabilities and risks of every day things.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!
This great book should be on the desk of every stressed out business executive. It brilliantly describes what it takes to be in a peak state of mind when you need to be.There is no question that business people as wellas everyone should train their bodies to get their minds in top shape.Thisbook illustrates that with great information about diet, exercise, and properattitude.A wise investment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacking new Insight to an age-old problem
I waited in anticipation for this book to arrive. Much hype had been made about this new research and the 21 day plan.Business men and women stuggle to balance work and home-life, and the foundation of this book isright on. If we loose weight, drink more water and exercise we will havemore energy for both. The problem with this book is that it says verylittle more.I found myself brousing through the book looking for newideas to give me some boost. The book does have some excellent chapters onhow to deal with stress in the work place. In fact, this book is worthbuying just for these two chapters. However, for those of us who read selfhelp books on a daily basis, you might be looking for more.

5-0 out of 5 stars At the Top of Your Game
Finally - a book that delivers on its promise to help you get to the top of your game, to help you achieve maximal performance levels in life - and does so using a common sense approach that integrates experience, study andscience with focus and commitment. The key is training like an athletewhether its following an exercise or nutrition program or developing apositive attitude. What a refreshingly realistic concept in this "apill a day takes the fat away" world!Through Dr. Groppel'sconvincing clarity, it all makes perfect sense. And you don't have to bein the business arena to benefit from the principles of THE CORPORATEATHLETE.Maximizing performance can be a goal that crosses age, gender andoccupational or vocational boundaries. But what makes this book stand outfor me is Dr. Groppel's holistic approach - completing the palate offitness by incorporating the physical, mental and emotional with thespiritual. It takes courage to take spirituality out of its politicallycorrect closet and plop it onto the Board Room table, to make it a keycomponent of performance enhancement.Could it be that the growth ofcourage, confidence, conviction and character is a natural end product ofone's development into the ultimate corporate athlete? I am convinced, after reading the book, that this is the case. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The transformation from a manufacturing-based economy to one that's all about service has been well documented. Today it's estimated that nearly 75 percent of Americans work in the service sector. Instead of producing tangibles--automobiles, clothes, and tools--more and more of us are in the business of providing intangibles--health care, entertainment, tourism, legal services, and so on. However, according to Harry Beckwith, most of these intangibles are still being marketed like products were 20 years ago.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Selling the Invisible: The Art of War
Harry Beckwith's Selling the Invisible reminds me of Sun Tzu's The Art of War in that it is not so much a manual on its subject as it is a primer on how to think about its subject. Knowing nothing of service marketing when I started to read it, I found many of its precepts counterintuitive (selling relationships?) but with the numerous examples aided by my own observation of the things Beckwith talks about, my eyes were opened in a way Sun Tzu's first readers must have been. Beckwith understands the core of service marketing is the service itself and focusing on the consumer's needs, not clever marketing designed to separate the customer from his cash or dazzle him with an empty sales pitch for unwanted products (take notice, Apple). This relationship to the customer and understanding his or her needs defines the successful business and indeed IS the successful business. Beckwith illustrates this with many practical strategies relevant to any service business.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Book!
Terrible is all I can say. This author breaks every rule he suggests to you.The introduction is boring. It is small story chapters with a bold sentence or two at the end. These are the principles he is suggesting. You can read these bold sentences in less than 30 minutes.Don't bother to buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for anyone involved in marketing and selling
This book is a real page-turner. (My copy is dog-eared with notes written in margins and post-it notes stuck on 11 different pages.)Harry Beckwith is a marketing genius. One quote I have used over and over again in presentations:"People who say, 'The businesses in our industry are basically alike' should recognize a human trait.People feel a need to justify their buying decisions, so they look for differences upon which to base their decisions. What does this mean to a company in an industry of lookalikes? It means that the more alike two products are, the more important each difference becomes."So very true.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
This a very good book. It is written by two people that together have more than 40 years of experience in project management (PM) and provides with real and usefull examples. 5-0 out of 5 stars very thorough and complete guide to IT projects
IT projects are very different from standard projects. This books provides an in-depth approach to managing IT projects. It has some very good specific tips regarding risk analysis, the management critical path (as opposed to the critical path), the use of score cards for project evaluation, how to deal with issues, and how to use lessons learned and experience to get continuous improvement in project management. In addition, the book focuses on templates rather than the traditional work breakdown structure-so it is gives greater flexibility. Another novel approach is use of the team members in participating in project management. Overall, very useful and informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars realistic and usable guide to IT projects
Our organization has reviewed over 50 books in IT and general project management from the view of usability and useful methods for a multiple project, complex environment. We found books like Schwabe and Menche somewhat useful, but very limited in dealing with the actual problems faced in projects. There was just too much introductory material. This book, on the other hand, is very useful in that it addresses problems such as scope creep, changing requirements, high management expectations, dealing with vendors and users, and other specific issues. It is also being translated into Chinese. This is the book you should get if you want to address problems in real projects and want specific guidelines. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tune Your Thinking Skills!
In the _Principles of Efficient Thinking_, Barbara Branden delves into the theory and practice of psycho-epistemology (the habits of thinking), including much material that seems to have been neglected in the Objectivist corpus of late. The material is clear and well-supported with examples, although a bit slow for more advanced students. Most intriguing were her discussions of the multiple levels of focus, common errors of reasoning, the requirements of good definition, and the differences between associational and conceptual thinking. Every thinking person should listen to this tape set at least once. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to get the monkeys (work units) of others off your back
The monkey in this case is in reference to the phrase, "getting the monkey off your back." A monkey is a work unit that needs to be done, and the manager in question is someone who takes on the monkeys of his underlings. Instead of delegating the responsibility to people under him, he does the job. The consequence is that he is putting in a full day on Saturday while his underlings are out playing golf. Finally fed up with this situation, he decides to truly take charge and keep the monkeys where they belong.
5-0 out of 5 stars How to delegate but not abdicate
Just as when parents allow a child to get a pet, then end up changing the hamster papers, walking the dog at midnight in a thunderstorm, and taking out the kitty litter; so do some managers spend all their time taking care of their employee's "monkeys". This book uses humor to teach managers the art of delegation, handing the monkeys back to their owners and giving them the responsibility of caring and feeding. But that is not all. Most managers will profit greatly by reading the techniques of monkey hand-off. This is especially true if you've ever been accused of micro-management. However some managers are great at the handing off the monkeys and then forget to followup on their condition. This book also talks about follow-up check-ups and insurance policies to make sure that monkeys are healthy. As employees become better and better monkey tenders, then less follow-up and insurance is needed. However a manager does need to continue periodic check-ups because he is ultimately responsible for the project.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent concept; a bit repetitive
This book offers a great way to approach difficult conversations. There are several templates in the book to show the reader how to do this. However, after reading it, it does tend to repeat certain aspects of the material.I am sure that some of that is for effect; but for someone who is capable of applying material quickly it can be somewhat boring.I still recommend it as a read, but I do not recommend that you need to completely read the book to get the overall message.

3-0 out of 5 stars Evolution of the dollar...
I'm a professional currency trader, so I bought this book to learn more about the history of the US Dollar going back to its creation. This book does give a lot of the history of the dollar, but unfortunately it is rather boring. Some of the stories are enjoyable and possibly apocryphal, but the book is still a very slow read.90+% of the book is devoted to the history of the US currency prior to the 20th century, so be prepared for some deep history of colonial America. There is a lot of good information in the book, but sadly, the story is boring.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another entertaining and instructive book by J. Goodwin
Jason Goodwin is a polarizing author, whose books are either hated or loved by his readers. As in his best-known previous book, "Lords of the Horizons", in "Greenback" he uses a lot of wonderful anecdotes to spice up his prose and keep the reader interested. As in that book, his grasp of the essence of the subject is pretty good, although one could disagree in the details. 4-0 out of 5 stars Milestones in the Evolutionof Value Storage
This is a very enjoyable work, well-written and researched, with numerous anecdotes and sidelights. I thought particularly strongthe early chapters on colonial and post-revolution America. One sees in Jefferson an early version of a common type today: the person who is adamantly opposed to debt and credit instruments because he himself is hopelessly swamped in debt. Today's debt paranoiac shuns credit cards and deferred payment schemes of all stripes in favor of cash (paper dollars and checks drawn on bank accounts). But for Jefferson those very paper dollars and banks were suspect. For him, the only "real" money was metallic: gold or silver. The only stores of value in his opinion were coins or bullion or land.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect means no splash
Flawless Consulting presents a clean slice of what it is to be a consultant.Just as a heaving boulder might fall into water, a consulting engagement has mass and impact on a client.A flawless consultation produces results without a splash. This book addresses what is necessary to do just that.It does a good job of covering the business aspect of consulting which include contracting, meeting management, identifying core issues and of course providing results. It also covers interesting subjects such as handling politics, strategies, ethics, body language and staying focused.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best
In my role as a Consultant and trainer and coach of other consultants, this is the most important book in my library.Block's original edition of this book, published in 1981 became such a classic that a second edition was created in 2000.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great public speaking in one easy lesson?
In a single short cassette, containing the bare essence of the book, Roger Ailes distills the advice he has given countless politicians and business people about communicating. His advice is not terribly complex: be yourself, be interesting, be likable. The book title tells it all: you -- the totality of who you are, speech, gestures, tone, persona -- is as important to the mesasge you convey as the words you utter. The book makes perfect sense. But the problem is that speakers often don't know what it is about theiemselves that makes their speech unpersuasive. That's why folks like Ailes are in buisiness, to provide the objective feedback that breaks through the curtain of self-denial that many of us weave around ourselves.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
The book is very well written and the content are absolutely useful. A must-have to strengthen your communication and leadership skills.

3-0 out of 5 stars Read this book before appearing on the O'Reilly Factor
I read this book very carefully, particularly the section on talking to the media, and I took every word to heart.I made sure when I went home to greet the throng of reporters waiting for me at my apartment (after I returned home from my temporary Accountant position) that I would take control of the situation and not let the news media bully me around.I immediately addressed the first reporter, simultaneously addressing the question and taking control of the situation by firmly stating "our performance has been stellar, our revenues have increased markedly and so has our marketshare, making our company an even more attractive target for institutional investors..."
