Editorial Review

Sumner Redstone should be dead. At least that's what the prologue to his autobiographical tale of business trial and triumph reveals, relating the story of Redstone's narrow escape and painful recovery from a Boston hotel fire in 1979. It might also be what some of Redstone's business adversaries secretly wish after reading this revealing book. Much has been written about the man in control of the Viacom empire, but in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Surprise!
Wow!I'm the first to review this book here in over a year!
4-0 out of 5 stars Sarah's Review
As a highschool student, I found this book to be extremely inspiring. Anyone who has ever thought of entering the field of business should read this book. I did and it helped me channel my i nner ambition. Redstones inspiring stories (he survived a terrible fire) made me want to get out and conquer the world. At times, Redstone seems a bit full of himself, but anyone who can climb to the top usuallly is. This book is a great read to anyone wanting to find passion by reading from a passionate person.

4-0 out of 5 stars You will love talking about this book.
Whether you buy this book for self-help or because you want to know how the top people made it in their careers, this book will satisfy you. Well written and focused, you catch a glimpse into the life of Sumner Redstone as he rose from a "poor, Jewish boy" to becoming a media conglomerate who is well respected (and feared) in his arena. 4-0 out of 5 stars This book doesn't try to tell l you what to do, but what had been done before
What does it take to be a successful business leader? This book, edited by Peter Krauss, is filled with classic writings by legendary business leaders. Also in this book, the reader will find, behind the inspirational phrases and classic pieces of advice, the stories and examples that will inspire, and turn advice into action. This book is not so much focused on telling one must be done, but focuses on showing what has and can be done.
5-0 out of 5 stars 51 Invaluable Perspectives
Peter Krass has edited the Wisdom Series series which includes this volume. Each anthologizes brief essays by different "icons of business." A brief bio of each author precedes her or his essay. In the Introduction, Krass asserts that "Among these various characters, in fact, the general consensus is that leaders are made, not born. The mythology of some mystical ability that surrounds these leaders is just that -- myth. As to the question: What makes a leader? The answer is here" in the 51 essays which he organizes within the following framework: 5-0 out of 5 stars An Indispensible Resource for the Perpetual Learner
This should be on every leader's or "wanna-be" leader's desk.Written by some of our past century's most effective leaders and edited to provide "side-bars" for the most important points in each oftheir articles, this book provides a much-needed tool.I have used it todraw on for speeches, research papers, and debate points.I first checkedit out from the library to see if the content was worth buying - and Iimmediately ordered it!This definitely provides food for thought andinspiration. It includes not only the actual articles written by theleaders, but also a one-page profile/background on each. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Spirit First; Success Follows: Winning the most and best through playing for the team and not strictly for the win!
"Leading with the Heart: Coach K`s Successful Strategies for Baseketball, Business, and Life by Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K) and Donald T. Phillips provides provocative, real-life anecdotes that capture the meaning of the spirit of winning for the team.Coach K shows that through the spirit of playing FOR the team - and not strictly for the win -- and with the spirit of those who can be considered "the HEARTS of the TEAM," possibilities become boundless. It's not the win that defines success. It's the spirit first, through which the success follows.Sometimes the team stumbles and sometimes the team loses.Every team and every human being goes through these trials and tribulations. What defines the spirit of success, as taught to me by Kirby Thibeault, author of a book of inspirational poetry titled Wealth, and reflected in the teachings of Coach K, is the ability to overcome psychological obstacles, to see and strive for the most positive possibilities, to never give up, to look outside the "box," to look within, and to discover the true meaning of winning.Kirby Thibeault, author of Wealth, expresses a similar perspective in his forward titled "Wealth" when he writes "It's realization is like that of the discovery of the divine. All that was unknown and limiting becomes clear and liberating. What was once feared becomes friendly.... It's an awakening of the spirit."Coach K delivers tips that help define the winning attitude in teams, in leadership roles, in success, in defeat, in life, and in considerations of humanity and love."Susanne Cardwell, owner/operator of Advert Marketing Solutions and avid supporter of the spiritual views of Kirby Thibeault, author of book Wealth.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great story
This book is written by one of the best guys ever in college basketball "Mike Krzyzewski" he has been the face of Duke basketball for many years.Throughout this book he talks about his life and how he became who he is.He talks about how he builds mentally strong kids and how he has trust in everything they do.If you play sports or coach a sport this book would be great for you.I play soccer personally and this book relates to what I am told every day by my coaches. You need to play as a team and if you do you will win.
5-0 out of 5 stars a great book to read through the summer
Leading With The Heart is one of the best books I have ever read.Mike Krzyzewski does a wonderful job talking about the important things in life.Such things include leadership and the importance of family.Krzyzewski set up the book in a fun way that makes it easy to read.He starts with the preseason, goes to the regular season, then postseason, and finally all-season.His use of basketball terms is like a metaphor for life.He also gives an outline before the chapter so you know what you will learn, and then gives a short summary at the end of each chapter to show you what you did learn. The book mostly talks about leading a team, whether it is in basketball or in the real world. The awesome thing about it though, is that he puts so much more into it than just how to lead.He dedicates his heart into this book, and every other emotion to truly make it a masterpiece. This book is defiantly worth reading. My reactions to this novel are tremendous.Krzyzewski has really taught me something, and I have never met him in my life. You will truly get something out of this book, even if you read just a paragraph from it.It really gives you determination to lead in what ever you do.Krzyzewski is one of the highest, most respected coaches in the history of the sports world, and you certainly will know it by reading this book.Krzyzewski really puts things into perspective, and he makes it so easy to understand. If you are interested in being a leader, or just want to get a lesson on life, or a life lesson, then you should really pick up this book and read it.I guarantee it will impact you in some way. ... A must have , great easy to listen beautifully narrated, excelent tips one of the best, perfect for every level, highly recomended. Defenitely worth every penny.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you are a pro, there is still some value, if you are new it is good stuff
I would not say The Art of Closing Sales has any ground breaking secrets that you cannot find in other sales books or courses. I will say the presentation style worked well for me. The information is not flying by to fast nor does it drag on and on. I would say for a professional seller who has been doing this for years will find a few points that maybe of value. Someone who is getting into selling should find this helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars An appetizer, but not the ful meal
This tape set by Brian Tracy is an abridged version of the program by the same name that Brian did for Nightingale-Conant and his fabulous seminar.

Editorial Review

The Western cultures esteem analytical skills measured by IQ tests: but there is clearly more to success and happiness, even in technological societies, than IQ alone. Goleman has written one of the best books on the nature and importance of other kinds of intelligence besides our perhaps overlybeloved IQ. Recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great personal and professional growth tool
As owner of a corporate training consultancy - PICKS Training & Consulting - and 20-year sales manager, I found 'EI' to be extremely beneficial to me in both my personal development and my profession. For anybody who is interested in better understanding their emotions and harnessing them for good instead of trauma, I encourage you to read this book and practice its principles.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking read
You know the feeling--your spouse says something that strikes you the wrong way, and involuntarily you tense up. You can almost feel your blood pressure rise. Without thinking, you respond emotionally, and soon what may have been intended as an innocuous comment has sparked a full-fledged marital battle that may leave as its aftermath lingering feelings of anger and resentment.
4-0 out of 5 stars The importance of emotions
Daniel Goleman has written an interesting book about the physiological and social consequences of emotions and our ability to control them.He makes a convincing case for emotional competence as perhaps a greater prerequisite for success than intellectual brilliance. Many of us can probably corroborate this for ourselves by recalling very intelligent people we have known who have a tendency to sabotage themselves through their inability to deal with other people appropriately.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT 17th CENTURAY SAMURAI SWORDSMAN'S ADVICE ON STRATEGY
Based on my readings, Musashi's motive in writing his Book of Five Rings had been to correct misrepresentations of his views on swordsmanship by his contemporaries. Having become a legend in his own time, Musashi's reputation was being exploited by ambitious rivals claiming to have adopted the master's martial techniques and philosophies. Thus Book of Five Rings was intended by its author to establish his point of view for correcting misconceptions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Although James J. Mapes's self-help book is stronger than average and includes some colorful stories from the author's life, it offers essentially predictable advice. Mapes uses the physics metaphor of quantum mechanics creatively, to show how you can make major life improvements, freeing yourself from the fear and inertia that may have held you back in the past. An actor, clinical hypnotist and corporate speaker, Mapes also includes a valuable section on how to encourage better teamwork. The material on visualization is strong, and we recommend the volume to both self-help devotees and newcomers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject and may.........
Tony Robbins and Zig Ziglar right behind. This book is intended to improve Your Self -Steem, -Knoledge and -Confidence to its very roots. As you realize that to be true, it will become mandatory as a reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars How Much of an Expert is he Really?
I bought this book and then did some background checking on the author. Seems Mapes's PhD is from a "diploma mill" - a phony and now defunct outfit that purported to be "San Moritz University," but is really just a printing shop. In fact, San Moritz is one of a group of unaccredited "universities," many of which were closed in an ongoing effort by the FTC. Since San Moritz claimed a UK address, it is not a recognised body as described by the UK Education Reform Act either. San Moritz was famous for giving out academic qualifications, transcripts and phoney reference letters to anyone, sight unseen, just for a few bucks. Do a Google search on San Moritz University, and you will see what I mean :-). ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars "Leading by Principle" Worthwhile Reading
Louis V. Gerstner, Jr.'s WHO SAYS ELEPHANTS CAN'T DANCE? is Gerstner's account of how he managed the turnaround of ailing computer mainframe giant IBM during his years as CEO (1993-2002).The book is at its best when Gerstner gives his personal account of his first experiences with Big Blue. For me, though, the details of the IBM revival are less captivating, and my interest began to flag about halfway through the book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good insights but falls way short of greatness
Gerstner had a big constraint while writing this book - he was writing for a general audience who may not have the inclination to know every single thing he did at IBM. Even after accounting for this, it is particularly disappointing that the book completely glosses over the real details surrounding the decisions that turned around the company. As he himself says, hard and tedious data crunching coupled with solid analysis is the basis of any decision and while the general public need not know the intricacies of every single thing, it is sad that he did not include a single case-study end-to-end.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice introductary read.
I'm going to be an intern in IBM starting June and I was told to read this book as an introduction to what Gerstner did with IBM.Quite honestly, all I knew of Gerstner was the simple fact that he turned around an ailing IBM and made it into the company it is today. This book certainly gave me more insight into the workings of the company and the man who changed the way it worked.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice ideas but not practical
He makes sound like the wall street market works like the casino. In the real world it doesn't work all of the time. I didn't loose money, but I did practice it for 5 months as a game and was only making 4% .

1-0 out of 5 stars Charlatans of the stock market
Spare us your suicide tactics WILL YOU??? Tell the truth for once WILL YOU?? About your getting kicked out (sued) of half the states in the union for your reckless tactics... And your damned suicide tactics of telling people to go ON MARGIN and lose their cash twice as fast with your damned stupid reckless ideas...

5-0 out of 5 stars Just a Great Book - Every Investor Must Read
I guess what I find funny is that some of the other reviewers say this book does not help. Having read the book I am really quite taken aback.

5-0 out of 5 stars Personality Plus
I read this book quite a few years ago but I really enjoyed the updated version. She has so much wisdom about this topic.I teach school and I have my students take this test. It really helps me to understand them and plan accordingly. It has also helped me to understand my kids and husband.I highly recommend it to parents and educators. Very enlightening!

5-0 out of 5 stars Elementary foundation usually serves us best
Reviewer Pascal Schoneburg complains, "If you're totally new to personality theories and or psychology as a whole, this book may be for you - if you have aquired a knowledge foundation in psychology this book feels almost like an insult." Well, Pascal, I have a master's degree in clinical psychology and I find Littauer's simple, foundational explanations the easiest to explain, illustrate, and understand one's essential personality. Go ahead and work with other systems that give you a possible fit in 16 categories, or 9, or whatever--and see how easily you remember what you've been taught.
2-0 out of 5 stars Level 1Reading
I have used their personality test sheet which I really liked so I bought the book to deepen my understanding. This book speaks to the reader at an elementary level, like talking to a child. I found it a bit upsetting and discontinued the book after chapter 1. If you're totally new to personality theories and or psychology as a whole, this book may be for you - if you have aquired a knowledge foundation in psychology this book feels almost like an insult. It made me feel like the authors think that the readers are like little dumb children that need stupid 'real life' examples after every single point... This book should in fact be in the children section or maybe young adults. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book!
This book, like all of Mr. Mackay's books, is absolutely wonderful. The information it contains is timeless.Do yourself - or a friend! - a favor and read this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic, no-nonsense information that is immediately useful
Harvey Mackay suggests basic details in this book, like being aware of how respectfully you address a someone else's secretary, but as simple as these suggestions are, they are critical. I read this book while I was on the public relations/sales team for the Marine Corps recruiting station in Kansas City. As a result of his principles of respect for people, care in personal committments and follow-through on obligations, I earned a quarter million dollars in documented free advertising per quarter for my firm. Needless to say, I won numerous awards and ample recognition from my superiors. 5-0 out of 5 stars the shark is back again
this is the terrefic book i had read after theswim with the sharks, itis easy to read , have alot of advice you could not find in any book. ifyou want totake an advice you can take it from someone like Harvey. havefun and engoy your self ...
