5-0 out of 5 stars Importance of Tax Aware Investing Brought to the Forefront
This book could/should be used as a handbook for investment professionals considering tax aware investing. Doug has compiled years of research, insight and practice into a concise "manual" to shed some light on this complicated, and ever-changing aspect of investment management.Billions of dollars are needlessly lost each year from investors' portfolios because investment professionals fail to consider the impact of taxes when constructing and managing investment portfolios.

First, I am not a lawyer, but a praticing design/ contruction professional.I have used this book for years.I find it very well written and easy to use.I have loaned it to so many lawyers when thing get tight that I don't remember all of them.I highly recommend this book for anyone who has to deal with contracts and construction. When things start to go sour, its a great resource for all parties involved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a Law Student

2-0 out of 5 stars Other sources are better for 1031 information
Perhaps the author is much more gifted as a seminar speaker than he is as a writer.I think the book could use a re-write in which the repetitive information is eliminated, and the remaining material is cleaned up, possibly following the suggestions of Strunk and White as described in Elements of Style. The 1031 exchange information comprises 22 pages of the 244 page book, and I was particularly disappointed with this section. The author went into useless detail when describing the hypothetical examples; his character, Lisa, needed to paint and carpet her old building before putting in on the market -not relevant! In the next example, Roger's exchange was given such cursory treatment that the author failed to calculate the new basis for the replacement property correctly, inserting an erroneous figure into table 6-2.If you want to put investment real estate into your IRA or 401K, then this book may have merit. However, a quick internet search of "1031 exchange" will yield many more useful explanations than this book provides.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Reference Book with Sound Strategies
This book will open your eyes to new ways of securing and increasing your assets tax-free.There are many details and step-by-step examples and different scenarios. If you are thinking of doing a 1031 like-kind exchange - this book will take you through the process and give you concise instructions on how do it and what mistakes to avoid. If you are interested in self-directed IRA's - keep in mind that you can use your retirement plan to invest in real estate. The author walks you through using your 401(K), your IRA, your HSA, and other vehicles to increase your portfolio by buying assets, including real estate.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy read !
This book has great information and is easy to understand!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, comprehensive guide for VC
The beauty of this book is that it is equally suitable for practicing professionals and students of the subject alike. I am impressed by the breadth and quality of presentation of just about every topic you should know if you are even half-serious about the VC space. For this reason alone, I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic!!!!!!!!!
As soon as I bought the book I could not put it down I read it from top to bottom non-stop. This book is an easy read and very applicable. I highly recommend this book to gain greater insights in the Music business or any business. It was a great buy along with a couple of manuals purchased from Musicbrains.net entitled the Indie label Kit onAmazon, Music business 101, future of music and Guide to releasing an independent record by Tim Sweeney.

4-0 out of 5 stars excelent
The music industry world ins an alien environment for most of the emerging artists and many need guidance to avoid scams and legal glitches, this book can be a good guide in defeating those lawyers that try to fool you into a deal. Despite the depth and professionalism , the book it isn't the best out there,” Music Business & Entertainment Law Contracts for Indie Recording Artist, Labels, Songwriters, Composers, Producers, Managers and All Others in the Record Industry. Binder / CD-ROM set (PC & Mac)" by Ty Cohen is far better when dealing with all the aspects and it includes viewpoints from different men in the industry, and also includes clear and easy to understand examples

5-0 out of 5 stars Real World Advice from a Real Guy - Highly Recommended
Not only is this book (and it's prequel, "Confessions of a Record Producer") the real deal, so is the man who wrote it. I was so impressed by his first book that I contacted him as a consultant on a producer/artist agreement I was negotiating (I am a producer). My goal was to come up with something that was actually fair to both parties and Moses got us to that point quickly. His suggestions were works of innovation that surprised and satisfied everyone.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Corporate Taxation Translated into Plain English
The book has concise observations about the corporate taxation subject with clearly written and cogent passages addressing all the important topics.I am a CPA and tax professional, and it has proven to be a valuable worktool when used in conjunction with the Internal Revenue Code and Regulations.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good introduction
This book is a very good introduction to basic subchapter C concepts with which every good tax lawyer should be familiar. The subject matter cannotbe fully grasped without some effort but this title will make that effortless burdensome.I highly recommend it to law students and tax lawyers whodo not have significant experience with subchapter C of the IRC. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This bookis gold!
This book is gold.I have bought several books trying to get a clear and concise handle on what is involved in making my business legal. They all bogged me down with things I didn't understand or was left with more questions.Until this book.Richard Stim starts right off with no bull.He states in layman terms what decisions need to made first and moves right on down the line.He gives clear examples of do's and don'ts and always gives references online for further exploration. He also suggests, when necessary, to check with an attorney and what legal forms you can do yourself and what forms can be adjusted. This book comes with a CD of legal forms, so there is no hunting them or tracking down the right offices at the court house.Richard Stim takes a lot of the mystery away and makes you feel confident.I highly recommend this book for anyone!

2-0 out of 5 stars Tough to NAVIGATE!!!!
I have used Turbo Tax since 2002.It is 2006 and I would have thought they would pay more attention to navigation problems. Now I am compelled to say something.Inevitably, each year it is a different problem. They need a QA team.So I tell it to import my info from Fidelity, it seems to run fine.I am pleased.I could not get it to import from another firm, HarrisDirect. So I hit Done so I can enter things manually. Then I get a password for another firm so I try to go back to the import screen but it isn't there. So I hit import from the file menu. Then it puts me in HarrisDirect and will not let me out. When I hit Done, it appears to have lost my Fidelity info.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Legal Contracts
I found this book most useful for the CD-ROM's legal contracts. As a consultant, I use these for all my clients.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good content, bad editing
There is a lot of good information and discussion in this book about the topics which a contract should cover. It falls down, however, when it comes to the actual contracts.Just comparing the website and the custom software contracts, there are differences where there shouldn't be.In the software contract, it's theCustomer, in the website contract, it's the Client.A bit more than half of the contract sections with (mostly) identical headings and purpose have unexplained differences between them. Many of these differences are not trivial. In the text, the contracts are interleaved with explanations, but often the commentary/annotations are just restatements of the contract itself, which is a real time-waster, especially if you've read the background material earlier in the book.Other occasional editing snafus include explanatory comments inside the contract text, formatting syntax commands on the page (END SECTION), and a less than clear and concise structure for indicating optional clauses (the intended combinations aren't always clear, even though customization is to be expected).Given the fuzzy line between a website and a web application (ie 'custom software' (and really, what website is NOT custom?)), and given the marked similarities in over half of the two contracts, why not cover the overlapping sections just once, instead of twice, but inconsistently? And the sections that don't overlap, or overlap badly? No real explanation as to the reasons for the differences.I hope I don't have the same problems with the two versions of the independent contractor agreement.Fishman has written a pile of legal books for the layman, including the more recent "Consultant And Independent Contractor Agreements 5th Edition".I have to wonder: "Quantity over quality?"Perhaps when he is working on the next edition of this book ("Legal Guide to Web & Software Development", due out 8/2007), he will take the time to re-organize some of the content and get a capable editor.A determined reader can sort out the differences on their own, but it need not be so difficult. The content is 5 stars (including 24 documents in RTF format), but making it work for you is a real pain if you care about details.

4-0 out of 5 stars This Book Delivers
A straightforward and well organized book.
