1-0 out of 5 stars Author Is Going to Prison
Anyone who believes this BS is either really stupid or really naive. The author has been charged with defrauding the federal government, has agreed to a plea bargain, and will enter the U.S. District Court in San Francisco next month to plead guilty. As part of the plea bargain Mr. Schneider has turned over his client list to the IRS, complete with addresses, phone numbers and other information. Some tax advice: When something sounds too good to be true - it always is.
1-0 out of 5 stars Tried it, book doesn't work.
I followed the book's instructions to the letter and tried toopen a current account at three Singapore banks recommended in the book. Only one replied, saying I could only open an account denominated in US dollars or Singapore dollars, and not any othercurrency, contrary to what the book says. In addition, this bank wanted somebody already known to them to introduce me to them before they'd deal with me.This book is a waste of time and money. I'm now doing internet research to get the informmation I need to do what I want to do. It takes a lot more time, but I feel confident of success. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Change your point of view
The value of this books lies in the author's frequent assertion that you are not 'avoiding taxes' or 'cheating the IRS'... because there are PLENTY of tax breaks written into the tax code that are legal and only have to beasked for; so ask! Many are best used by small businesses which areincorporated, but others apply to everyone. He has many travel deductionstrategies which make most of a trip deductible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, wicked book about how to legally reduce your taxes!
I read the parts of this book that related to me...mutual funds, etc. Then I browsed through other parts. The examples make each point clear and are often humorous. There are lots of ways to keep taxes much lower through planning ahead of time. This book makes it fun to make those plans. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Will save you a couple of hours with your tax professional
This book discusses tax planning as seen from 10,000 miles above the ground. It covers only the most basic ideas instead of going into deeper explanations. When a topic gets more complicated the authors refer the reader to a tax professional or a financial advisor. The last paragraph of the book summarizes the problem in the best way: "As we said before, we think utilizing a tax professional is a smart idea. A traditional tax professional will help you prepare and file your return and give you plenty of tax-wise advice along the way." (page 212) It's a pity that the book itself doesn't contain all this "tax-wise advice."5-0 out of 5 stars This book keeps it simple!
I found this book to be refreshingly user-friendly and well written. The authors know how to simplify tax information and they provide many useful tips to save time and money. The book also assumes that the readers are "no dummies" which is just plain smart. Thank you H&R Block for helping me to understand how to get my tax and financial life in order!

4-0 out of 5 stars a good first line of defense for people with net worth.
A friend was telling me what happened after his promotion to senior vice president was announced in the newspaper. Dozens of free offers began to come in the mail, such as coupons to use in exclusive clothing stores and free lunches for two at expense-account restaurants. One of the latter was for a restaurant he'd always wanted to visit. So he took the offer and was immediately surprised at how gracious the service was. He and his friend weren't that hungry, so they turned down an appetizer and a cocktail. After they had ordered a meal and told the waiter they would not have room for dessert, the waiter leaned in conspiratorially and whispered, "have some, for goodness sakes. It's all free!" My friend's unwillingness to capitalize on the restaurant's hospitality reminds me of the way some high net worth individuals look at taxes. They figure they owe it to someone to take some of the government's free offers, but not all of them. By "government free offers" I mean the ability of the system to give as well as take away. It doesn't necessarily give tax advantages out of social generosity (although it may seem that way politically sometimes). We simply have a system that can't know what you're doing all the time, and it doesn't want to know, either. Terry Coxon plumbs the principles and pragmatics behind the limits of the system. Planning to avoid taxes depends on knowing the world according to the IRS and the world as it really is, with all the gaps so implied. You should understand baically where tax rules come from and how they are enforced and changed. Investing is another activity where you can get easily sidetracked. You may think that the identity of a particular investment or strategy is of paramount importance. In reality, the only think important in your portfolio is results. Successful investors act on this instinctually. Others tend to get caught up in minutiae. Coxon also emphasizes protecting yourself against lawsuits, where anything you own could be used against you to satisfy a judgment or just scare you into submission. Litigation is not a gentlemen's game, as many losers of lawsuits find out the hard way. To maintain your financial privacy, don't use credit cards and checks routinely. Keep your checking account in another county, and change banks every few years. He also advises the use of a money market fund for checking, "so that no one can dig through your records without digging through the fund's records." The author also advocates tax deferral through the use of mutual funds, deferred annuities, and even types of life insurance. This is where he loses me. Knowing a little about such things seems more dangerous than knowing nothing at all, and the chapters on these subjects are brief. Other tax deferral vehicles are outlined here: deferred-payment sales help you defer capital gains or interest income. A number of acceptable strategies exist to drag your feet abou recognizing gains which can be taxed. Coxon's attitude about recognizing losses is something I hadn't heard before, but it's consistent with the rest of his book: "A loss is an insult to the investor's pride, and no mere tax savings will make it tolerable. Selling is too much like putting on a dunce cap. "This attitude is difficult to escape. I can only point out that, if your investment is worth less than you paid for it, the loss has already occurred. So you should feel bad even if you don't sell. Selling is simply a way of getting the tax collector to share your grief." This kind of advice is refreshing and will hit different people different ways. On balance, this book is a good first line of defense for people with net worth they want to protect.

How would you like to be able to use a charge card that is private?I did not know there was such a card, but you can get one!Do you want to protect yourself from being financially destroyed by a simple lawsuit or an out-of-control predatory government agency? This book explains how simple anyone can set up a private foreign bank account. It gives a very good explanation of a protective foreign trust that can protect you, save taxes for you, and even more for your beneficiaries. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Pre-Modern
Not worthy.Despite the promising title and subtitle, the book is written in the pre-modern tax-minimization mode. The proper goal of tax-smart investment management is not minimizing taxes.Rather, the modern view is that tax-smart investing should focus on maximizing after-tax risk-adjusted returns. The chapter topics--direct ownership, munis, tax-deferred savings plans, employer retirement plans, annuities, whole life, MFs, VAs, VLI, MECs, real estate, FLPs, asset location, estate tax, estate strategies--are reasonable and do include nuggets of insight, but lack the over-arching modern view of taxable investment management. The variable annuity chapter, for example, does include 3 paragraphs on the "minus" of extra expenses but considers the fact in isolation.Details building a case for this "minus" are weak--they seem stacked against persuading someone that expenses are a significant negative.(When in fact, many VA policies have expense levels egregious enough to defeat the tax-smart aspect of VAs.)Note further that at least 100 pages of the thin book are fluff--appendices of minimal usefulness. The more so since this 1999 book cannot reflect the 2001 tax changes.Even if the tax code weren't evolving, I'd question the appropriateness of this book in the "Wiley Financial Advisor" series for any but the greenest advisor unacquainted with the pre-modern rudiments of after-tax investing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Be prepared to pay a pretty penny to your CPA
I own this update and his last book. Basically concepts are good and prose somewhat entertaining. However, here is the catcher. If you are going to use a CPA for doing all this stuff be prepared to hock your house and your family. What the CPA'S do not get the lawyers will when they charge you for setting up your FLP. I saw one bit of communication where the authors states that refiling was not worthwhile when his fees were factored in !!!!. That should tell you something. You do not believe me just call his office for a quote. This guy's has found the hoy grail of relieving most investors...opps ! i mean us traders from our profits !2-0 out of 5 stars Look Elsewhere
I found this book to be a vast waste of time. There is very little of practical use to the trader. The author spends the majority of the book on his "Triple Crown" of reducing taxes.None of which you can do without a CPA.You would be better off visiting this book at your localbookstore, jotting down the "Triple Crown" and then hiring a CPAto explain it to you. The writing is poor and difficult to follow -- notbecause of the technical difficulty, but, because the sentences andparagraphs are so poorly constructed. Save the $( ) and look elsewhere.
