Best book for introductory level students
This is the best alternative for those who want to understand what management accounting is about. Traditional books tend to focus on the decision making part (how to find some optimal solution for an accounting problem.). This book adds the control part: how to make a solution come true. Satisfaction verses conditon and service
Althought the book recieved was in new condition(as advertised), It was linked to it's purchase through the 13th edition textbook which I also purchased(via another seller). The Working Papers recieved were for the 12th edition, I needed the 13th.In the future I will make it a point to ask any seller the book edition if they fail to mention it in the adversement. ... A BASIC BOOK
Smoke & Mirrors walks the reader through the arcane, bewildering world of the modern corporation, showing how contradictions suffuse the accountants motives and corporate morality--or immorality in most cases.It is a basic introduction to the limits of numbers, whoever issues them, and highly critical of conventional wisdom. Must reading for libertarians and egalitarians alike.
In this engaging and well-written volume, Thomas Nagel squeezes a good deal of political mileage out of his perpetual distinction between the personal and impersonal points of view. Here he finds a difficulty strikingthe right balance between -- as his title suggests -- equality andpartiality. very good case for egalitarian politics
Speaking as a libertarian, I disagree with Nagel's thesis.But the book is a very good, *clear* exposition of the moral underpinnings of a defense of equality.Nagel takes the view that their are certain impartial values that call us to action, that the personal view entails a partiality toward one's own goals that does not adequately constitute a moral point of view.Nagel clearly sets the terms of debate between an individualist or libertarian who only affirms agent-relative values and an egalitarian who affirms agent-neutral or impartial values.A definite must-read for anyone interested in political philosophy. ... For once a practical summary I can use!
I found this publication very informative as in a single source, I was able to read about all of the productivity methods and measurement tools in the marketplace.As a novice to concepts like Six Sigma and activity based costing, it was a great to find in a few pages an explanation and practical implementation tips for these concepts and more.Starting with the overall history in this marketplace and then moving quickly into practical guidance, the author displayed a great command of the topics.I also saw how he blended the productivity measures to create a more meaningful accounting of a business operations....I just wish more companies took this approach.

Theories that work in the real world.
With over forty years of experience in helping dozens of companies to become more profitable, the author gives us the fruits of that experience by cutting through many of the extraneous elements of traditional accounting methods.Being competitive has always been about change and adapting to new paradigms.This books and its theories are a "next generation" of principles that move accounting systems into the next century.Just don't tell your competition about it.

Extensive
This book is extensive but confusing. I had to flip back to different chapters to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Vague, wordy, confusing, and in need of examples
I found that if you want to learn the language of auditing, have another reference handy.Often, the discourse goes on and on and on and could really be distilled down into a sentence or two that had a firm and grounded presentation.There were very few examples so it was difficult at best to try to understand the often high-level conceptual frameworks that were constantly being presented.I also noted quite a few editing errors that probably arose from cut-and-pastes that were not carefully reviewed.Also, figures and diagrams were reused and were not carefully reviewed either as information was present that didn't apply to the new scenario.

Very Confusing
I believe you can find a better auditing textbook in the market. I took an auditing class with one of the authur in Portland and, as a result, was required to buy the textbook. But, I ended up using another auditing textbook in order to get an "A" from this class. The format and writing style are very difficult to follow and understand. ... Read more
