4-0 out of 5 stars Very detailed
Hicks has a lot to offer in this book on activity-based costing, however it is not an easy to read.It very quickly dives into the weeds of detail.I think this is a very good second book to read on Activity Based Costing, because it goes into the details of how to actually implement a system. I would recommend that you first read Kaplan's "Cost and Effect," to get a good grounding in the fundamentals before reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Buy for ABC
This is a fantastic book on the subject of ABC.The costing model constructed in the book goes into just enough detail to give you a practical foundation for actual implementation, without getting lost in minutiae. At just the right times, the author also reminds you about the big picture and doesn't let you go away thinking correct decisions can all be boiled down to exercises in number-crunching.This is a must-buy, if you're serious about implementing ABC in your organization.

5-0 out of 5 stars It really makes it work
Activity-Based Costing: Making it Work for Small and Mid-Sized Companies, is a very well written and usefull handbook to design and implementation of Activity-Based Costing. It provides: a general description of key conceptsof ABC, a practical guide to design of ABC system in the company, as wellas description of any potential problems concerning implementation of ABC.I am working as a financial consultant (in Warsaw), and this book hashelped me to help many companies that were loosing theircost-effectiveness. I think, that the author should have added some 100pages to the book, and defined - described some aspects of Activity-BasedManagement - although that could have been too technical for most of thereaders. Overall, I think that the book contains most of the knowledgeneeded for successful design & implementation of ABC. It really workedfor me... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Summary of Everything you Need to Know
Sarbanes-Oxley is now a couple of years old. In that time companies have struggled to understand not only the letter of the law, but what it really means in terms of what the Government and the courts really want.
4-0 out of 5 stars A technical take on SOX's internal ramifications
Author Michael Ramos provides comprehensive, meticulously detailed information. He offers a detailed guide to evaluating your company's internal controls. He addresses Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 legislation, as well as associated Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) regulatory requirements, even covering the COSO and COBIT reporting frameworks. While expert and exhaustive, the book suffers from a dense, academic writing style. We suggest it to those who seek a very detailed compliance overview and who already have experience with understanding auditing standards and related governmental regulations.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time and money on this book
Author doesn't have anything in this book which not already available free of cost on the internet. It was a total waste of my time and money procuring and reading this book.May be useful to people who can't search items on their own online. Admire the market who knew how to title useless books like these!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
Am teaching myself QuickBooks for my husband's carpentry business, and this book is very helpful. The QuickBooks tutorials are great, but without this book, which is specific to carpentry, it would be much more difficult.I recommend getting the book before you start setting up accounts in QuickBooks. It even comes with a CD for a sample company and estimator program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Introducing contractors to an exceptionally comprehensive understanding of the computer-based programming system
Enhanced with an accompanying CD-ROM, the Contractor's Guide To QuickBooks Pro 2006 by the team of contractors, accountants, and QuickBooks Pro experts Karen Mitchell, Craig Savage, and Jim Erwin is an in-depth, "user-friendly" guide to coordinating and knowledgeably approaching using the software programming of QuickBooks Pro in building construction contract development. Introducing contractors to an exceptionally comprehensive understanding of the computer-based programming system, QuickBooks Pro 2006 guides readers through QuickBooks Pro 2006's national estimator, an easy-to-use program with over 100 pages of construction cost and estimating data for general contractors; the Job Cost Wizard which swiftly converts the National estimates into QuickBooks Pro estimates for ease in creation of invoices and track job costs; as well as a collection of blank construction forms for customization and use with customers and subcontractors. QuickBooks Pro 2006 is very strongly recommended for its concise and thorough coverage of the often difficult dealings of construction contract estimates and bids.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is a book that revolutionized management accounting
Relevance lost of a book about the history of management accounting. The book is very well documented in that in times they were able to deduce different conclusions made by others. They start from the very beginning exploring as far back as the 18th century. They start out by discussing how textile mills started recording in their books accounting information. They begin from the very beginnings of accounting.Accounting emerged as a discipline in the early 18th century, but their underlying purpose in not for internal uses but it was created so that stakeholders can gauge the value of their investment in the firms that put out these financial statements. In the book there are a number of firms they highlight that made important contributions to management accounting. The first company they highlight is DuPont corporation in the nineteenth century. There is a theme to the development of management accounting.DuPont first staterted out as a manufacturer of gunpowder but went on to become bigger. The first companies that innovated their way of internal controls in management accounting grew out of a necessity.DuPont first came out with a measure of their business which was the return on investment measure.Because Dupont was becoming bigger and it needed to measure return on investment to measure the profitability of individual business units. It was a measuring rod to asses the different business activities of it business units. With this measure the managers of DuPont could make decisions such us which business units to invest on and do away with units that are performing poorly.4-0 out of 5 stars Historical backgrounds of BSC, ABC & EVA
If you want to understand everything about the historical backgrounds of such now well-known management instruments like the balanced scorecard, activity based costing and EVA, there is no better book to read than this book. This book started off a transformation of management accounting and of organizational performance management. Essential reading for controllers, students of management and management consultants.

4-0 out of 5 stars Broad History of Mgmt Accounting

2-0 out of 5 stars Horngen's book better
I am currently inplementing a project/job accounting system. This book was fine as an overview but of little use otherwise. Horngren's Cost Accounting - A Managerial Emphais was also purchased. Horngren's book was better as an overview and for the theory and details of implemtation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Broad ideas with nothing said!!!
I hoped to find something useful in this book but the only good idea in this book is `how to separate the debtors in portfolio'. Everything else is NOTHING. Especially if you use an ERP solution you don't have to bother with what is said in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book !

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for any A/R clerk, A/R manager, or controller/CFO
This is a very well written book. However, it is not intended for someone who has never been in accounts receivable. There is an assumption that the reader has heard of Sarbanes-Oxley and other accounts receivable terminology. The book provides numerous case studies which are excellent ways the author drove home and supported his points.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Environmental Financial Reporting
Before I read Greg Rogers book, I thought accountants were mere number crunchers and that the lion's share of the crunching would eventually be performed by a sophisticated software package-- or at least people in India. The happy truth (for accountants, anyway,) is that accounting is an inherentlySUBJECTIVE (and, therefore, not highly-outsourcable discipline.)A less happy (and somewhat scary) truth is that I actually found Rogers' treatment of accounting fascinating. Yes, it may be that I need to get a life, but this book is a must-read for anyone who wants to excel in the environmental industry.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Buy for Environmental Lawyers
I have been an environmental lawyer for over 20 years and say without hestitation that this is the best single volume book on SEC and Environmental Disclosure that I have ever read. Other books explain how accounting principles operate but Greg Rogers not only easily dissects these complex concepts in a way that is easily understandable to lawyers without any financial or accounting background but also illustrates their application to environmental issues. You will feel like an expert after reading this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Learn quickly about this very complex topic
This books pulls together brilliantly the complexities of the multi-disciplinary challenges of reporting environmental liabilities after Sarbanes-Oxley and FIN 47.

4-0 out of 5 stars CSULA student taking his auditing class
I am currently taking an auditing class (ACCT 424B) with Dr. Hayes (the main author) as the professor. The nature of this book is international, yet it is completely relevant to American standards, including recent developments such as Sarbannes-Oxley. The exercises are very helpful in making you think about the concepts presented. Examples of CPA exam questions are interspersed throughout the book. Illustrations (including sample documents) are clear and understandable. The accompanying web site also includes multiple choice questions for each chapter. Given that this is not published in the U.S., it is a good value, considering what I've paid for other accounting textbooks. As for Dr. Hayes, he's a good teacher who keeps us up to date. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great place to start
First, the author Gary Cokins has practical experience in ABC/M that spans a significant amount of the evolution of this practice. His book, Activity-Based Cost Management strikes a solid balance between theory and application helping the reader make progress and understand why. The author also connects the topic to many important contemporary issues including the internet, software, lean and six sigma. This is a great starting point for anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great starting point and continuing reference
This book is an excellent resource for learning and understanding ABC accounting. Unlike many web articles and white papers, Gary's book is a practical not academic approach from someone who has been there, done that, and has the t-shirt. It's filled with lots of explanatory diagrams which help to visualize the concepts presented and are useful when presenting on a high-level to executives under time constraints for reading. Chapter 1 clearly presents ABC basic concepts while Chapter 2 is a direct follow-on expanding the depth and breath of those basic concepts. Chapter 3 addresses the question that all senior management wants to know: Are all your trading partners worth it to you? Subsequent chapters focus on typical ABC modeling applications most relevant to organizations. Chapter 6 gives a very good cross-comparison of project/work order costing vs. ABC that is very helpful to project-centric organizations in understanding how ABC differentiates itself. Chapter 7 succinctly places ABC software in the reengineering software spectrum without getting lost in a technological morass. Chapter 9 addresses rapid prototyping for getting initial results from the methodology that can be tweaked iteratively to grow a more sophisticated ABC model. In conclusion, I highly recommend this book and look forward to Gary's "ABC Management - Making it Work" which is next on my ABC must-read list.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Executive's Guide to Understanding ABC/M
Gary does a wonderful job in explaining not only what is ABC/M but also why it is needed is today's competitive environment.I enjoyed the discussions on defining and measuring capacity as well as the cost of quality. If you're looking for a book that describes ABC/M and it's uses, this is it! ...
