This book is poorly written.There does not appear to be any presentational logic used.The same topic will be brushed upon on one page, dealt with in a more in depth fashion on another, and then brought up again later.Important points are often difficult to ascertain, obscured as they often are by more irrelevant text.ALso, different modes of presentation, such as list fashion displays of audit techniques, or other means such as various,"blue" sections, makes it difficult to study this text in a systematic manner.Then there are the review questions, which professors love to assign as weekly homework.THey are often made up of 10 part answers.A little thought about how students actually learn, rather than using a convenient presentational method based on how lazy tenured professors like to teach (or write) could make this book more useful.As it is, most of my knowledge of these topics will be gained through CPA exam reviews.SInce CPA reviews depend on the preferences of people who actually use them, I do not doubt they will be much better.PS:down with tenure.

This book is very confusing for beginning auditing students. This is my first auditing course and I'm having a difficult time completing the homework because I don't understand what is being asked of me. If I had previous auditing experience it might make a little more sense, but it seems like the author is repeating a lot of stuff over and over in the first few chapters without really explaining what you're supposed to be doing. It all seems very abstract, which makes it difficult to apply what you're learning to the homework. If you're looking for an indtroductory book to auditing, I would not recommend this one.

This was the best.A very clear and concise book for the serious student being introduced to the subject of Finance.Other books on the subject I've seen are very abstruse or just plain hard to read aside from weighing a ton. I had another book twice as thick to complement this one and my class abandoned it in short order.This book is comparatively light and chalk full of useful ideas and examples laid out in anorganized and methodical manner.The generous use of charts and tables was executed well. I am trying to educate myself on the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) and bought this, and another book by Scott Green to get started."What is Sarbanes-Oxley", is an excellent starting place.At just over 100 pages, the book gives an overview of the sections of the Act (404, 302, etc.) one needs to know in order to navigate through the terms, terminology and subtleties of the Act.

By "manager," the authors appear to mean "someone who is not financially literate."Although this book does a good job of explaining how to analyze financial statements, I was disappointed that it didn't really contain a practical manager's perspective.Instead, this book is just like many others -- it does a credible job from an academic perspective of explaining financial statements and their use. Don't expect to learn much about applying this to your job as a manager or as a small business professional.

I met Gary at a SAS conference the other day and we had a discussion on various issues. One of them being the query of why so many strategies to improve performance fail. Is it in the design or the execution of strategy? Gary popped the commonly accepted view that it is failure to execute otherwise sound strategies. And I replied, being a Strategy Consultant for over 16 years, that I haven't seen a sound strategy yet. After some debat we agreed that design and execution are equaly important.

StevenBragg is a totally insightful and unique accounting writer, and as usual, he provides a very interesting discussion with this text. For me, it both inspired me to seek to become a Controller -and at the same time, discouraged me from hoping to ever becoming one. He sets the bar very high! But if your current job title is Controller, you should probably buy this book, and get to work reading and implementing its recommendations immediately, even though you have practically no chance of incorporating even 20% of these suggestions.
