5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know in finance - superb!
I found this book very complete and comprehensive as a reference source. It covers the strategic and operational perspectives of the finance function. This is one of the best "CFO" books, together with "CFO Architect" and "CFO Handbook".A little bit overpriced - I would have put it in the US$60 range.Reading this book is like taking an advanced course in preparing yourself for the CFO career. It is very didactic and straightforward. A recommendation for the author: in a future edition, you might consider expanding on the topics of international finance, value based management and corporate restructurings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for any Controller
ANy Controller will benefit from this well written, very comprehensive guide.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth that much !
I am disappointed about this book. The book is basically written for students who know little about the business/accounting functions. I found the contents are not deep enough, at least not for veterans oraccountants. Therefore, if you want a thorough knowledge of thecontrollership, this is not the one you should read. Try others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand
This text book is very self-explanatory.Makes learning the information easy and helpful. All books should be written like this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Food & Beverage Cost Control
As a culinary educator, I find this book both informative and user-friendly.The Excel spreadsheets and "Fun on the Web" exercises add interesting and useful technological components. The text gets to the point on all issues without belaboring the theoretical aspects of food and beverage cost controls. The book covers junior and senior level concepts in a readable format suitable for freshmen and sophomores. It is a book for all levels with real life examples.I would recommend it to anyone, be it from education or industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent edition!
This book is a must-read for any foodservice manager who is interested in an accurate, to the point, and technologically advanced review of food and beverage cost control methods. Controlling labor and food costs have never been more important than in today's environment. Those managers who master control procedures will succeed, and this book helps them to do just that.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives you the basic start you need.
So you're going to start a business, and if you have any money left over at the end of the year you're going to save part of it and spend part of it. OK, but your business partner isn't going to like that very much. 'What, you say you don't have a business partner?' Yes, you do, and he usually goes by the initials IRS.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly paradigm-shifting work
Ron Baker is doing for the professional services firms what Columbus and Pythagoras did for the "Earth is Flat" proponents!"Paradigm-shifting" has become so over-used in our culture, but it is not mere hyperbole when describing this book. The work is quite thorough, implementing excerpts, quotes, and philosophies from dozens of well-respected scholars, economists, and management consultants. The work reminds me a lot of Tom Peters' seminal book, "In Search of Excellence" in the way in which the author sprinkles in so many great examples from other successful organizations and industries. In addition, he has many real-world examples (from firms around the world) of professional services firms that have successfully tranformed their practices.I whole-heartedly recommend this book to any professional who is trying to transform a professional services organization or who is wondering if there might be a more effective and profitable way to run a professional services firm.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Essential Reference for Law Firm Leadership
I first read this book about 2 years ago.I keep it within arm's reach of my desk and refer to it often, still.
5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful, well documented.
This is a very well-documented guide for any service firm. It's also very well written, very insightful and very well researched. It's real deep, complete and full of advice and wisdom from several great minds. I run a corporate reputation consulting firm in El Salvador and this is the most advice-rich book I've encountered in the last five years. I also recommend "the trusted advisor" by David Maister and specially "Managing the Profesional Service Firm" also by Maister. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best Auditing Book Available
During the 16 years that I have taught Financial Auditing at the university level I have been constantly on the lookout for the best available book. I chose Whittington & Pany because (1) it is succinct, (2) it presents auditing concepts clearly (although the authors do sugar coat the accounting scandals of the past 20 years and fail to give credit where credit is due by naming the firms involved in them), (3) the page layout is attractive and easy to read, and most importantly (4) my students preferred it over other texts (one student told me that she chose my class after looking through the assigned texts for all of the Auditing sections, an excellent idea).
5-0 out of 5 stars Whittington and Pany ROCK!!!!!
Let me tell ya! What do you get when you combine Whittington, Pany, and Auditing? It's just a boatload of accounting fun!!!These guys know how to put together a book on auditing. This thing is a real page turner. Damn! Attestation really rocks but Assurance Services will just blow your mind. Even if your're not an accountant, this is a great read.I understand the 13th edition is already a red hot item, so grab a copy today before they're all sold out. This is the one book you'll definitely want to have with you if you're traveling and you have room in your back pack for just one book.Read it, then read it again and again. Seriously, you can't put this thing down. It's THAT good! You'll be talking about it with your friends and family for years to come. Can't wait for someone to turn this puppy into an offering for the big screen. That would be sweeeet!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The easiest way to learn about SOX
The author has somehow found a way to make this incredibly arcane subject interesting and easy to digest. This book, unlike every other SOX book I have seen, is filled with practice tips, checklists and witty commentary and is written in a way that makes the statute and the SEC's rules easy to understand for lawyers and non-lawyers alike. It also provides other key sources of SOX information and is a pleasure to read. She should consider changing the title to "Sarbanes-Oxley for Lawyers, Executives and other Dummies who Don't Have the Time or Patience to Wade Through the Other Dry and Boring Books on the Subject".I highly recommend this book to lawyers and non-lawyers alike.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Even a Bit of Humor in SOX
Sarbanes-Oxley (usually called SOX) was a congressional response to a bunch of big time business failures such as Enron. The law was rather rushed through to wide bi-partisan support. In their rush, Congress passed a pretty general law almost an outline, leaving the details to be defined by the Securities and exchange Commission (SEC). As with a lot of such laws, we have:

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Practical Book,Classic
Jerry really knows how to help people learn accounting. Learning accounting is about practising but not reading. Reading helps but it won't solve problems. The one thing I really appreciate about this book is Jerry uses real life accounting practice within companies from different industries to illustrate every single chapter, within which all the accounting theories and principals naturally flow. You can see all the kinds of accounting problems with actual number and data being solved with the application of relevant accounting theories, principals and methods. You know how real things are done. I have read many accounting books, among which loads of books lack exercises for me to practice after I read certain chapter. But buying Jerry's book, you get two books, one for reading, and one for exams. Nearly half of the book is Exam Questions, which emulate my real exams quite well. I can't believe an accounting without good exercise questions is an book. If you seriously want to pass exams and know how the real accounting is done, this is the book for you!

1-0 out of 5 stars No solutions... How are you supposed to check your progress?
This book is good about listing the objectives and showing you exactly where to find the answers for the multiple choice questions. For example: What is the purpose of a job cost sheet? The book highlights the area where the answer is.Easy huh?Well, what about the actual accounting problems? The detailed problems at the end of each chapter have NO SOLUTIONS to them, and you can't buy a solutions guide unless you are an instructor!I'm not an accounting wizard, so I have to actually practice before it sticks in my brain... imagine that.I guess they expect everyone to see the problems and read about the problems and automatically get it.They work out a "Demonstration Problem" for you, but that only applies to some of the problems at the end of each chapter. ...
