5-0 out of 5 stars OKC CPA
I am very impressed with this reference book.It has saved me valuable time in my accounting practice.I have turned to it a number of times this past year, and so far Warren Ruppel has never let me down.He seems to have a nack for presenting a clear and thorough understanding of each topic in a concise manner.I also recommend accounting material written by Rhett Harrell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Continues to be the top book for Governmental GAAP.
I've been using the GAAP for Governments book for the past three years and not only does it continue to impress me, but it keeps getting better. It is complete, easy-to-read, and has been instrumental in helping me and my associates in our practice.I've read similar books on Governmental GAAP but no other book seems to explain these difficult topics in such a clear and complete manner. This is one of the most valuable books I have every owned. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A book to break the mould
Dan Hamilton, who used to help run European policy at the U.S. State Department, now directs the Center for Transatlantic Relations in Washington DC, and this book should revolutionize the way Americans think about Europe. Put aside the jokes about the French and the gloom in Germany about the lackluster European economy and the market wobbles about the future of the euro and read this book. The relationship between Europe and the U.S. is not about Iraq or NATO or Russia or the UN or working together for debt relief for the Third World, it is about the way they are becoming a single Transtalantic economy. Daimler takes over Chrysler; British Aerospace and British Petroleum now have more American than British shareholders; Airbus is the second biggest aerospace employer in the US. The key to Hamilton's book, which builds on a report published by his thinktank and written by Joseph Quinlan, is that we have been looking in the wrong place when we try to analyse the Transatlantic economic relationship. It is not to be measured in trade figures, because there is so much more mutual investment that we don't ship goods back and forth - we ship money that builds factories that employ people and make goods. So Transtalantic trade is some $600 billion a year; but add together the sales of US-owned companies in Europe, and European-owned companies in the US, and the real economic relationship is over $3,000 billion a year, and 12 million Europeans and Americans work for one another's companies. This is one interwoven and interdependent economy; Europe and the US are joined at hip, whatever Jacques Chirac of Geioge W Bush may say. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Once again, Larry Kotlikoff is ahead of his time
I had the honor of working the Professor Kotlikoff on several occasions in the early 90s. Even in those days, he was well ahead of the thinking on the topic of generational wealth/deficit transfers, off-the-books accounting, and the need for drastic reforms in pensions, social welfare, and government funding.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good, if knee-jerk, analysis of European policy
Mandelbaum's "The Dawn of Peace in Europe" is a well-researched and articulate piece detailing the future of NATO and of American involvement in Europe.Though short, it is detailed in its analysis and provides the reader with a clear understanding of his position. In it, Mandelbaum attempts to analyse the role of NATO, and critique the directions that other have prescribed for the alliance.Mandelbaum feels that the best course of activity for the alliance is to stay as it is, and redirect its energies into "reassuring" the perpetuation of the common security order that exists in Europe. He feels that NATO is poorly equipped to pursue out-of-area missions, such as the one in Bosnia, and that expansion of NATO is a mistake because it installs victor's justice on Russia, and this justice will be remembered by the Russian people as an insult. It appears as though this analysis regarding the impact NATO expansion will have on Russia is somewhat of a knee-jerk reactions.Opinion has shown consistently that the Russian people do not care if NATo expands and do not feel that it is necessarily a threat to their security.Furthermore, many analysts including Andrei Kortunov have written their opinions on this issue and have shown that only in the most extreme case would there be a nationalist backlash against NATO expansion.Mandelbaum still views Russia as the enemy of NATO, as it was through the Cold War, and thus his view of the alliance may be somewhat dated.Despite this however, he provides the reader with a clear approach to the future of European security.Mandelbaum articulates the idea of a common security order existing in Europe now that ensures the peace without the high costs of balance of power politics and without the unrealistic tenets of world government.Whether or not a security order continues to exist, according to Mandelbaum will depend on whether or not Russia will stay peaceful and if the United States will stay in European defence mechanisms. If things reamain as is, Europe will be the bastion of peace in an all too unpeaceful world.I recommend this book for all analysts interested in European security. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Better than college textbooks
The author wrote this book assuming that non-financial people need to understand accounting, making this easy to read and understandable. Having gone through a college course on accounting, and being forced to use three other books (which were also worthless), I only wished I read this book first. Although it's designed for not-for-profit organizations, it explains the differences with for-profit organizations, and explains why certain things can be done, or can't be done. For anyone who is starting fresh, starting a new company, or planning on taking accounting in college, I would strongly recommend you invest $30 (my accounting textbook was over $100) and the first chapter alone, summarizes the the first 10 chapters of several college textbooks.

2-0 out of 5 stars small non-profit organization treasurer
This book is not for bookkeepers. It is more for accountants who want to understand non-profit accounting. If a bookkeeper needs to know the proper day to day and month to month entries for this kind of organization, than this book is not for you.
2-0 out of 5 stars Soporific and Overly Wordy.
Reads like a law textbook. Author often uses three sentences where one would do. Much ink is wasted telling the reader "we won't go into that here, but Chapter "X" deals exclusively with that." Concepts are understandable for those with an accounting background, but definitely would not recommend to someone without a solid grasp of accounting fundamentals. Author should have hired a writer to help him smooth out his writing style. Not recommended. ... Read more
