4-0 out of 5 stars The Best Auditing Book Available
During the 16 years that I have taught Financial Auditing at the university level I have been constantly on the lookout for the best available book. I chose Whittington & Pany because (1) it is succinct, (2) it presents auditing concepts clearly (although the authors do sugar coat the accounting scandals of the past 20 years and fail to give credit where credit is due by naming the firms involved in them), (3) the page layout is attractive and easy to read, and most importantly (4) my students preferred it over other texts (one student told me that she chose my class after looking through the assigned texts for all of the Auditing sections, an excellent idea).
5-0 out of 5 stars Whittington and Pany ROCK!!!!!
Let me tell ya! What do you get when you combine Whittington, Pany, and Auditing? It's just a boatload of accounting fun!!!These guys know how to put together a book on auditing. This thing is a real page turner. Damn! Attestation really rocks but Assurance Services will just blow your mind. Even if your're not an accountant, this is a great read.I understand the 13th edition is already a red hot item, so grab a copy today before they're all sold out. This is the one book you'll definitely want to have with you if you're traveling and you have room in your back pack for just one book.Read it, then read it again and again. Seriously, you can't put this thing down. It's THAT good! You'll be talking about it with your friends and family for years to come. Can't wait for someone to turn this puppy into an offering for the big screen. That would be sweeeet!!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the package deal the publisher leds you to believe
My criticism is not against the book per sec but it is most definitely toward the manner in which it is sold. The book comes as a package with extras that turn out to be nothing more than a free CPA study guide last updated 9 Aug 03 (almost a year ago and you have to mail in a card that gets answered 6 weeks later by email with a link to down load) which makes it out of date with its competitors for the new computerized exam. Then there is the Power Web website that you can go to with the password in the book.Except for the PowerPoint slides and Excel spreadsheets for some homework I found the site useless.McGraw-Hill would be better selling this book by itself (which when I called them it is no longer available by itself) with out the extras that are not worth the cost or updating its "guide" and including it along with the PowerPoint slides, Excel spreadsheets, and Word check figures on a CD IN the book when you buy it.This whole thing is nothing more than gouging already cash strapped students.McGraw-Hill should be ashamed. If you must buy the book as a student get a used copy without the junk; if you are a college bookstore please do your students/customers a monetary kindness and sell the book at the lower "by itself" price. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The easiest way to learn about SOX
The author has somehow found a way to make this incredibly arcane subject interesting and easy to digest. This book, unlike every other SOX book I have seen, is filled with practice tips, checklists and witty commentary and is written in a way that makes the statute and the SEC's rules easy to understand for lawyers and non-lawyers alike. It also provides other key sources of SOX information and is a pleasure to read. She should consider changing the title to "Sarbanes-Oxley for Lawyers, Executives and other Dummies who Don't Have the Time or Patience to Wade Through the Other Dry and Boring Books on the Subject".I highly recommend this book to lawyers and non-lawyers alike.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Even a Bit of Humor in SOX
Sarbanes-Oxley (usually called SOX) was a congressional response to a bunch of big time business failures such as Enron. The law was rather rushed through to wide bi-partisan support. In their rush, Congress passed a pretty general law almost an outline, leaving the details to be defined by the Securities and exchange Commission (SEC). As with a lot of such laws, we have:

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Practical Book,Classic
Jerry really knows how to help people learn accounting. Learning accounting is about practising but not reading. Reading helps but it won't solve problems. The one thing I really appreciate about this book is Jerry uses real life accounting practice within companies from different industries to illustrate every single chapter, within which all the accounting theories and principals naturally flow. You can see all the kinds of accounting problems with actual number and data being solved with the application of relevant accounting theories, principals and methods. You know how real things are done. I have read many accounting books, among which loads of books lack exercises for me to practice after I read certain chapter. But buying Jerry's book, you get two books, one for reading, and one for exams. Nearly half of the book is Exam Questions, which emulate my real exams quite well. I can't believe an accounting without good exercise questions is an book. If you seriously want to pass exams and know how the real accounting is done, this is the book for you!

1-0 out of 5 stars No solutions... How are you supposed to check your progress?
This book is good about listing the objectives and showing you exactly where to find the answers for the multiple choice questions. For example: What is the purpose of a job cost sheet? The book highlights the area where the answer is.Easy huh?Well, what about the actual accounting problems? The detailed problems at the end of each chapter have NO SOLUTIONS to them, and you can't buy a solutions guide unless you are an instructor!I'm not an accounting wizard, so I have to actually practice before it sticks in my brain... imagine that.I guess they expect everyone to see the problems and read about the problems and automatically get it.They work out a "Demonstration Problem" for you, but that only applies to some of the problems at the end of each chapter. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you trade swaps, this is one book you have to have.
This book fills a huge gap in linking a diverse number of products together. From cross currency swaps to swapping bond issues to floating structures, as well as optionality and fixed income risk management as it should be done.Swaps and other Derivatives is the culmination of Richard Flavell's long and respected career in the markets, giving back to the reader exactly what you need to know..in a practical form.No heavy math, just good clean excel style pricing examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent book for pricing swaps
give clear excel examples on how to implement swap calculation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent field guide
This is definitely the best book in the market for Swaps and related derivatives. The level of detail is extraordinary in comparision with other available books. Leaves very little gaps which means it is easy to apply the knowledge in practical situations.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars From the experts in the field
Michel Dacorogna and the team at the former Olsen & Associates are well-known experts in the field of foreign exchange rate data analysis, and their book provides us with a vast, useful source of information. Unfortunately for students and other beginners, the book is written like a compilation of papers and review articles, the opposite of pedagogical, and with an awful choice of 'computerese' notation (MA(t,n)=sum(EMA(t',k)... etc) that makes Boudhaud-Potters look easy in comparison. More to the point, even their noncomputerese notation is difficult to follow. I hope for a very different second edition written pedagogically for students of this growing and important field. On the positive side, data analyses are performed using logarithmic returns, not price increments. Workers in the field who consult this text will find it helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the new millenium...that's what we need.
The book covers a wide range of topics related to high-frequency data in Finance. There is a very detailed approach to tackle a huge amount of data and to deal with its based stylized facts. The book triggers the reader's desire to update his knowledge in the field of finance.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than An Introduction
This one of the few books on high frequency finance is a most welcome tothe literature. The book is useful not only for people who are new tothe subject but also for researchers in the field since it is a mostuniform treatment of many topics. From adaptive data cleaning (chapter4) to intraday and weekly seasonality (chapter 6) and real time tradingmodels (chapter 11), it covers a broad range of topics specific to highfrequency financial time series analysis. Chapters on volatilitymodeling (Chapter 8), forecasting (chapter 9) and correlation andmultivariate risk (chapter 10) are enlightening especially for riskexposure analysis and risk management purposes. Finally, the theextensive bibliography is a precious source for those who would like toexplore certain topics in detail. I highly recommend it for practitionersas well as researchers in the field. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Why do so many otherwise rational individuals make irrational decisions when it comes to money? Financial journalist Gary Belsky and Cornell University psychology professor Thomas Gilovich contend the answers can be found--and the deficiencies remedied--with help from a relatively new science called behavioral economics. Still largely unknown outside academic circles, the field can be traced to research on the impact of rewards and punishments on human judgment and decision- making that first were undertaken at Jerusalem's Hebrew University some 30 years ago.In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We are all humans. Let's learn how to handle our flaws.
The book is terrific. I think it has to be read with a bit of humility, though. In my view is the only way we can recognize our own flaws, to give it a shot at correcting them.
4-0 out of 5 stars A useful book
This book does a good job of debunking the myth that people act in economically-rational ways.It discusses how investors tend to be overconfident in their ability, how the first price they hear "anchors" their perspective on what an appropriate price is, how people tend to follow the crowd, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Anyone interested in knowing why they can't save enough, read this book
Man, if only I read this book 15 years ago,I would have saved my self tens of thousands (possibly hundreds of thousands in lost investment opportunities)!!I learned the hard way that not paying attention to money is a good way to go broke and in debt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking book
Mulford and Comiskey have delivered a tour de force for the financial and accounting community in this book. Whether you are a financial analyst, corporate accountant, auditor or an executive with a small or large firm, you absolutely will benefit from this book. It is one of the most important books of the last 20 years, and in my opinion, it is the finest book ever written on the concepts and methods of deciphering Operating Cash Flow, it's relationship to earnings, calibrating and measuring free cash flow, as well as the mechanics and drivers (and sometimes deliberate manipulation by unscrupulous management) within the business system that can lead to distortions in the Cash Flow statement.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best book on the subject.
Messers Mulford and Comiskey have released a primer on what has lately become a messy subject. Unlike other books with a focus on cash--Hackel's book, for example--this one delves a little bit deeper into the subject of financial misreporting. The reader is given a synopsis of how companies say that their cash is operating, whereas it ought to be put under financing or investing cash flow. There is a multitude of similarly constructed arguments. The examples are lucid, apropos, and contemporary. The book also has a deterministic model for calculating CFFO. Read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mulford's methodology shows why Cash is King
Over several years of using and preparing the GAAP-based cash flow statement in analysis, I have found it isn't that useful in enabling me to drill down to understand where a company's real operating cash flow comes from.Mulford's methodology does an excellent job focusing on interim period cash flow information to enable the reader to better spot positive and negative trends in an operating company's performance.I found Creative Cash Flow Reporting to be a most useful treatise on what's wrong with the cash flow statement and how to work around its problems. The section on analysis, the cash flow drivers, and the growth cash-flow profile were particularly helpful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text Book for Beginners
This is an excellent text book for beginners. During my freshmen year, our professor wisely chose this book as our main text book. The book is concise and explains everything in a clear and understandable manner. I have often wondered whether or not Weygandt, Kieso and Kimmel have hired students with no accounting knowledge to help review the book, because I am certain that even 10 year olds can understand the material. Overall, I highly recommend this book for beginners and for people who just want to know what accounting is all about. ... Read more
