3-0 out of 5 stars Another game afoot!
In the 1980s, Frank Thomas wrote a number of novels featuring Sherlock Holmes and Watson, and all were published in German, I believe, but not all in English due to a paperback publisher going paws-up in the midst of the series. Now some of these are being brought to print, or reprinted as the case may be, by Xlibris.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Intro for Beginners
This is the first book on tax liens I've read so I don't have anything to compare it to.However, the info. presented in the book was very easy to understand and gives you a good grasp of why you would want to add this to your portfolio.I wish more states were covered; but that's okay.Overall, if you are wanting to become educated on the topic, this is a good place to start. However, if you want everything detailed and outlined; you're probably better off going to one of those seminars where they sign you up.This book will give any beginner a good first step.I plan on reading "16% solution" as well as doing more research on the internet...but overall, excellent first place to start.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money
This book has little to offer.Anybody who is impressed with this book must be related to Yocom or is comatose to the business world. The 16% Solution ... is much better albeit dated.

1-0 out of 5 stars Painful to Read

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
There are two key words in the title to this book which to those considering retirement are a must: "Low-Tax"!If for some reason you missed that pitch maybe the second clue as to whom the book might appeal to is those on fixed incomes; ie. those who haved retired.Because we all know that taxes are an item over which we have little control, it behooves us to find a place we can stand to live that also might be a "tax heaven" instead of a "tax hell" to use terms supplied by the authors.I found that definitive term well applied by the authors but would not necessarily agree as to their choice of the best places to live in the states which have low tax rates. This book determines places with low taxes based on the things which the average joe pays taxes: personal and real property, income, purchases. Some web sites such as the one produced by the Tax Foundation of America base their ratings on "per capita income" of all taxes, including business taxes and thus don't accurately reflect how individual tax rates might affect the retiree. This book avoids that trap. Now if you can afford to purchase a home in these "tax heavens" you are really set.Remember people who have retired have fixed incomes from pensions, social security, personal savings (IRA's,etc.) and so on.They have to limit governement access to those funds.States with NO income tax certainly have to be a place to start.

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
The authors, due to space considerations, do not include the nature and source of incomes used for their comparisons. Without this information, how can one determine if they fit the profile used.Read more

Editorial Review

In the entire history of American taxes, only a handful of people have ever expressed a preference for paying them. Everyone else feels taxes should be paid by people other than him- or herself and an immediate circle of friends. Another point of near-universal agreement is that the tax code is far too complex, and that creating and enforcing it places the government in a crucial role in our day-to-day lives--a position that makes many taxpayers uncomfortable.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good intorduction to U.S. tax policy
The U.S. Income Tax is a great way to introduce yourself to tax policy in the united states. It does a great job at showing the issues of why the system must be reformed. Also it show how political tax reform gets inside congress, and how this causes reform to stall. In the end it shows several diffrent, and inovative, ideas for tax reform. One of the key strengths of this book is it takes a totally non-partisan look at tax reform.Something that is rather difficult to do.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fair Tax the best way to fund government
The most important thing about the Fair Tax - EVERYONE would know EVERYTIME they paid their income tax.The sneaky way the government is funded now - through witholding taxes - keeps people from knowing how much they pay in income tax.In fact, most people think they don't pay income tax when they get their refund!
5-0 out of 5 stars I've heard it all, yet still support the FairTax!
For the blowhards who say the government will raise taxes on guns, but not Big Macs, I have a guestion to ask them, "have you read this bill?" or better yet, "do you understand this bill?".
2-0 out of 5 stars If Only It Were True!
Ose contends that a 23% retail sales tax on new goods (and services) would allow abolishing the IRS, and income, Social Security, Medicare, corporate income, death, AMT, gift, capital gains, and self-employment taxes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but suspect
I'm going to prelude this by saying I haven't completed reading this book yet, but want to express my opinion on what I have read so far. While the information contained is rather interesting and eye-opening, I have to take much of what is said with a grain of salt. The primary reason is that I have come accross several basic math errors in the author's conclusions (the difference between a 19.8% rate and 18.1% rate is NOT 9%).It's also rather dry reading (though I somewhat expected that, considering the topic) and repetitive (did the author really need to provide the exact quotes of 15 different people all saying (effectively) the same thing to make his point?).

4-0 out of 5 stars More Like Who Does Not Pay Taxes
I had a concern coming into this book that is was going to be pages of dull tax code jargon that kill any reading joy I might find in a book that bashes politicians.Luckily the authors wrote the book for the average Joe and left out the tax code. The basic premise of he book is that there is a special set of rules that the rich have had written into the tax code so that they do not pay the stated rates on the progressive tax system in the USA.This should not surprise most of us as it is the rich and corporations that spend the money with the politicians to get them elected, thus the back scratching has its fingers in the tax code. Now days it is hard to bring this charge up without all the Class Warfare bias charges being tossed at you and this book is probably no exception. To me the authors did not seam to really be that bias, just real mad. 5-0 out of 5 stars Left winged or right winged this book is well researched
America, Who Stole the Dream, was a WONDERFUL READ.I find myself leaning more to the right, from a political perspective, but the authors arguments are EXCELLENT at times and they definitely bring up some great points.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must" read for US bound Canadians
There are three million Canadian citizens living in the United States (often traveling back and forth across the border), with almost two millions Canadians visiting Florida each years. Many Canadians and Americans incorrectly assume that the laws governing investment, taxation, and immigration are the same in both countries. They are not. And that's why The Border Guide: A Canadian's Guide To Living, Working, And Investing In The United States is such a timely and necessary book recommended to the attention of all Canadians coming into the United States for reasons of work, education, travel, investment, or residence. Thoroughly "user friendly", The Border Guide will help anyone from getting disadvantaged by the fluctuations between Canadian and American currency; quality for old-age and social security benefits on either side of the border; obtain the best that the Canadian and US medical systems have to offer; receive Canadian pensions in the US almost tax free; even how to buy a retirement home and deduct the mortgage interest from Canadian tax returns. All these and so much more make The Border Guide a "must" read for US bound Canadians! ... Read more
