4-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars
very good book that addresses contemporary tax issues (i.e. savings vehicles, organizational format, tax arbitrage, international, M&A, etc.) by consistently using a few concise, clear frameworks (all parties, all taxes, all costs AND 1 pocket 2 another, 1 time to another, 1 type to another.
5-0 out of 5 stars Solid treatment of material
We used this book as the text for a masters level course in our masters of accouting program. Students responded well and appeared to enjoy the book. They found the treatment of the material to be at an apporpriate level, and they rated the book a five on a five point anonymous rating. The only suggestion they proferred was for some companion piece covering a few of the more currently used planning techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Text For a Complex Subject
As another reviewer states, the material for this book was used in the Taxes & Business Strategy class at both the University of Chicago and Stanford's business schools. Compared to other texts on this subject, it is actually readable and, more importantly, understandable to a non-tax professional. The are an abundance of examples that you can apply directly to situations which arise in real world situations. The 2nd edition has been updated to reflect most recent changes in the tax law.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars How to Beat the IRS
Keeping up with all the IRS rules and regulations can be a real hassle. The tax code keeps getting more and more complex every year, in spite of countless promises by politicians to "simplify" the system.
4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful
I bought TaxCut software, then read this book, I end up with a tax professional to do my 2001 tax.I am glad I read this book though, I avoided making mistakes and I followed carefully to my tax attorney's advice. This book is informative and insightful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid, up-to-date tax advice for 2002
Now available in a revised and updated eighth edition, What The IRS Doesn't Want You To Know: A CPA Reveals The Tricks Of The Trade is a compendium of solid, up-to-date tax advice for 2002. 5-0 out of 5 stars Jeff is my FAVORITE tax planner!
I started getting and reading his books in 2003 (see my Listmania), and have begun visiting his MSN message boards and article indexes.I now have a brand new tax issue, and am looking to the 2006 and 2007 books for guidance in how to handle/shelter a coming $10k raise.
4-0 out of 5 stars You have to be serious about it.
I've been reading this author's columns on the web for some time. You can not read this book and look at it as a "self-help" tool. It's not that at all.You must be at least semi-business minded to execute these types of tactics and strategy or you will fall on your face. For me, a well read business person (at least I think so) this book can be summarized like this:It's a Cliffs Notes version of the Tax Code, written for the savvy tax payer. He takes the aspects of the tax code that pertain to a lot of people and breaks it down. There are times when a law degree would be helpful to read this. But, if you read it carefully, you'll do better than you had, were you not to read it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for small business deductions!
This book is absolutely terrific (as are most NOLO books).the author details what is deductable for the different forms of businesses, what records are required, how to record those records and specifics for all the major topics of deductable expenses. All in all if you walked in to see an accountant day one of starting out your business he should just hand you this book have you read and then answer any questions that you need further clarification on.This is a great reference if you are unsure how a specific deduction works and a very quick and easy read. This should be on every business owners shelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars J Vasquez
This book is amazing. It's hard to set it down.Well organized with clear explanations and examples.A must for new business owners. It will help you steer away from IRS audits. The capital expense section will show you how to deduct the cost of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Explaining the Rules, Both Written and Understood
The income tax laws of the United States clearly allow you do deduct business expenses. But from this basic rule has come an incredibly complex set of subsidiary rules that further define what are legitimate deductions and what are not allowed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great for entertainment value...
...but that's all it is.The book makes a lot of amusing arguments as to why you don't need to pay tax and you may find it funny if you are a tax attorney (as I am), accountant, enrolled agent or any other kind of tax practitioner.Considering Mr. Schiff is in prison for tax evasion now, I'd consider this book to be completely bogus.A good laugh, yes; good advice, definitely not.

3-0 out of 5 stars To be read with a grain of salt
While I agree that Schiff makes some interesting points in his claims such as paying the income tax is voluntary, that 'income' does not include wages, that it is okay to file a zero 1040 return, etc., following such advice will be fine until the IRS comes knocking at your door.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth Can be Costly
Irwin Schiff is correct and amazon is brave for still having a link to this book still up. This book is banned material in all forums and this includes amazons selling of it. read the court order banning the book at www.paynoincometax.com . Schiff is under is prosecution (persecution is more like it) by the Feds because they of course want to keep us all slaves. And we are slaves no matter how you want to justify it. (paying a "fair share" is a socialist term) Serfs in feudal England were considered slaves and they got to take home more than we do now. The Federal Government operates outside the Law and the courts are clearly simply ignoring the facts. Go to his site and read the motions and decisions rendered so far and see for your self how the court behaves. There is of course one reviewer here who is clearly a Federal Agent. Do note that according to the Patriot Act, once you purchase this book, the government will know about it and you will be on thier hit list. So if you can get it through other means. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Painful on the Surface, but Needed and Well Done
Taxes? Ouch! It's rather like going to the dentist. A necessary evil. Most of us small business owners love the profits, but cringe at the taxes. Uncle Sam can be intimidating and a book like this can help overcome the fears, while explaining the options. It answers most of the FAQ's we face and does so in a thorough and easy to understand manner. I will probably refer to it many times as various tax issues arise.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll be happy you bought it!
This is an exceptionally well-written and practical book on small business taxation and a very good starting point for anyone who is interested in learning how to keep good business records.

I bought and read this book and there is lots of useful information here but I wish that the authors had gone further.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Explanations of a Complex Tax Code
Taxes related to a small business are complex and even a little bewildering if you haven't gotten into them before. But as this book says, they're not rocket science difficult.

3-0 out of 5 stars good book, but needs further improvement
It is very clear and accurate in explaining the rules. It is not vey clear in certain chapters like Alternative Minimum Tax, or quantifying, even approximately, who can pass the trading activity test.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Learning About the Taxation of Investments
5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal for those new to investment portfolio management
Kaye Thomas' Capital Gains, Minimal Taxes: The Essential Guide For Investors And Traders is a "plain language" guide to stocks, mutual funds, options, and tax strategies for maximizing returns and minimizing tax liabilities. Complete, authoritative, practical, "user friendly", this guide is ideal for those new to investment portfolio management and will prove both practical and invaluable in creating a personal financial investment plan with allied strategies. Indeed, Capital Gains, Minimal Taxes has much of value to offer even experienced investors with respect to tax rules for short sales, stock options, and "straddles". Highly recommended reading for sensible small investor strategic financial and investment planning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very handy.Buy your accountant a copy!
This has been helpful for my husband and me in planning our business, and we purchased a copy for our accountant, since very few really understand the nuances of the horse business.

3-0 out of 5 stars Official Guide for tax cheats
This book is a love it or hate it guide to auditing horse activities. That's why I had to go middle of the road on the review. I believe it is mistakently marketed to legitimate horse stables, breeding farms, training barns and businesses who want to assure themselves that they won't fail an audit. However, if you ARE indeed a legitimate business, this guide probably won't tell you anything you don't already know. This guide's merit is mostly for backyard or recreational horse owners who are attempting to pass their hobbies off as a "business," or those who list their personal horses as a business expense to attempt some extra tax savings. That being said, you know what category you fall into. If your primary business is horses, whether it be breeding, teaching, training, transporting, etc., don't waste your time or money on this one. If however, you are a retiree who would like to try to pass off your 3 backyard nags that you occasionally breed as a "business" read away. And let me know what jail is like in a couple of years =-)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for research
I used this as the backbone of my senior paper in college. However, I found that the authors did quite a bit of stretching to say that "no impact could be found".My own research has concluded that stadia can not be evaluated in purely economic terms as they chose to do.
3-0 out of 5 stars Statistics, Numbers, and Evidence
Andrew Zimbalist is back with his newest book on the economics of sports, Sports, Jobs, and Taxes. After writing Baseball to Billions, the Smith College professor returns with this publication on the effects of buildingstadiums in major markets.Zimbalist co-edits the book with Roger G. Noll,a director of the Public Policy Program at Stanford University. The twomen examine many different cities and their various plans that involved newsports facilities.Using a dizzying assault of numbers and statistics,Sports, Jobs, and Taxes proves case by case how employment, taxes and urbandevelopment were either unaffected or negatively influenced by thefacilities built in the respective cities. While such examples asMinneapolis, Chicago, and Cincinnati display evidence to support theeditors' theories, the repetitiveness of these chapters' points begin towear on the reader. Still, one comes away fully understanding what iscontinually stressed by Zimbalist and Noll.Sports facilities and theteams that play in them do not enhance local economies, do little for jobcreation, and never make up for the cost of higher taxes. ...
