Leveling the playing field with the IRS
Very well done book which helped me with my problems with the Irs. The forms that IRS sends when you want to offer a compromise were baffling (just like any government form). The Tax Debt book helps to get through thepaper work, and the real life examples in the book are great. You stillhave to do the footwork, but the IRS will cut your tax bill if you knowwhat you're doing. It wasn't easy to deal with IRS on your own, but it'simpossible without a book like this. Adams, an independent scholar affiliated with the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C., has produced a breezy account of tax revolt in American history, from the Stamp Act to the present day. Although there is scarce opportunity in the book's 242 pages to delve into the details of such pivotal events in early American history as Shay's Rebellion and the collapse of the Federalist Party, Adams does consistently manage to choose those details which best support his thesis that "excessive" taxation is a form of government tyranny. This leads to interesting interpretations of history such as his sympathetic description of the Reconstruction-era Ku Klux Klan as an underground resistance movement against federal tax collectors.Adams also provides a full litany of charges of present-day assaults on liberty by the IRS. There is throughout a certain sense of preaching to the choir, quite understandable given the subject matter.However, those who pick up the book not thoroughly convinced that taxes are at best a necessary evil might welcome more history and less rhetoric. ... The Only Certain Things in Life: Taxes, and more Taxes
Author Charles Adams is a former lecturer at UCLA and a tax consultant with the CATO Institute, a Washington D.C. Think Tank. He has written many publications on the subject of taxes, with most all of them attacking the present system of income tax and discussing ways to improve the system of internal revenue collection.
Entertaining vignettes of citizens resisting the taxman
This book is for general reading and should not be confused with a scholarly history of taxation.It is a series of chapters that are brief retellings of various historical incidents involving citizens resisting taxation in various ways or citizens being made to suffer through taxation programs.These tellings do have a point of view and historians may find some of them rather blunt and ignoring certain subtleties that might mitigate some of the author's point of view.However, in total the book does make its point that it is up to the citizens to hold the government responsible for its spending and the taxation it levies to pay for that spending.
Not too good
I was very disappointed with this book after hearing positive reveiws from many others. It is hard to take a book seriously that makes controversial historical claims, and then fails to footnote the sources. I found the writing to be dull and many historical facts to be in error. Disappointing but useful
This book was written by two distinguished experts on tax policy and reviews the development of the campaign to end estate taxes at the federal level.In many cases it is quite informative.But compared to Jeffrey Birnbaum's book on the development of tax policy in Congress (Showdown at Guccci Gulch) is it quite light in a couple of areas.
Too partisan to prove useful
As a tax attorney, I was excited to purchase this book and get a non-partisan, in-depth look at what was going on with respect to the estate tax.Michael Graetz has a stellar reputation as a law professor, so I was doubly excited.
Who knew?
My grandfather was born in the rural South in 1885. With little help from family and no help from his government, he put himself through college. He married, became a dairy farmer and sired seven children which he brought up and thoroughly educated (all seven went to college)during the Great Depression. Of those seven children, his four sons all became his working partners and one son lived and raised his own family on the family farm.

This series by Dan Busby (both the Church & Nonprofit Organization Tax & Financial Guide and the Minister's Tax & Financial Guide) are a must have EVERY YEAR for anyone doing church finances, and payroll in particular.These books are especially helpful for non-accountants serving as church treasurers as they are written in plain English with little or no "accounting jargon".They are easy to read and understand and, more importantly, put into use.I also recommend them for tax preparers who have little or no experience doing returns for ministers.Even the best, most professional tax preparers can make mistakes on ministers' returns (I've seen it happen!) because of some of the strange tax codes particular to ministers. ...
