3-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly rocket science
Merchandising math is all straight-forward algebra. This large format 340 page book is padded with a comprehensive description of merchandising, from fashion forecasting to merchandise hierarchies to vendor relations. The most useful information I found was how P&L is expanded for a typical retailer, and explanations of retail terms like maintained and cumulative margin. The exercises on planning P&L, preparing a six month plan and calculating OTB were useful, but the book is aimed at college students, anyone with retail work experience will find much of the material pretty obvious.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
I received my order promptly and the book was in excellent condition complete with working CD! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Yale Model Thoughts
Guy Fraser-Sampson with his first book, Multi Asset Class Investment Strategy, has made a huge contribution to practice of portfolio theory.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and entertaining treatment of the subject
Guy Fraser-Samson builds on the Yale Model to institutional investing, so I somehow expected another version of Swensen's "Pioneering Portfolio Management". However, "Multi Asset Class Investment Strategy" is in my eyes a huge improvement and a surprisingly entertaining and satisfying read. Guy Fraser-Samson is a brilliant writer, with a real talent for describing a complex subject. His book is down to earth, light-hearted and full of analogies that make the subject easy to grasp and interesting. It covers a wide range of subjects and demonstrates that brevity really is the sister of talent. I personally found his discussion of risk as particularly practical and relevant."Multi Asset Class Investment Strategy" is the perfect starting point to learn more about a portfolio management approach that so far - at least in Europe - has not received sufficient attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outside the box high quality editorial
I have read a lot of the writer's articles in the past in both US and European publications, and have always been impressed by his writing style, grasp of the subject, and ability to think outside the box.

3-0 out of 5 stars Handbook for Managers, not investors
Although helpful and well written, the book appears more appropriate for executives or managers of operating companies that may be faced with bankruptcy prospects.A good overview of how the process unfolds, players, objectives, legal issues, and procedures is provided.Managers at a financially distressed operation typically carry a different toolbox of experience and skills, and therefore, this book would be well worth the introduction to the topic.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very practical reference, "thin" on theory and case studies
Very useful and convenient reference guide for restructuring bankers / distressed debt investors.Probably too generic for experienced bankruptcy attorneys. The text and examples are efficiently presented and the author does a superb job of distilling the bankruptcy code into an easy-to-read format. The chapter on valuation is nothing more than the common stuff you read in any corporate finance book.A case study and a more extensive discussion on bankruptcy term sheets and negotiation tactics would have made this book more praiseworthy. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good primer for non-finance people; fun, light mental workout for practitioners
Madden's "CFROI Valuation" is a good primer on valuation, especially for non-financial practitioners, managers, and executives of public firms who have been pounded in the last decade with the goal of maximizing shareholder value today - even at the risk of tomorrow.A cursory review of numerous other books and articles on valuation shows that the topic has become somewhat of an art-meets-science clich. Madden provides a relatively fresh approach on the topic using the cashflow return on investment (CFROI) perspective.
5-0 out of 5 stars CFROI explains stock prices better than P/E ratios
Best finance book I have read in years!5-0 out of 5 stars The millenium stock selection model
Madden's text substitutes empirical fact for academic claptrap, clearing away the underbrush of neat-though-erroneous theories like CAPM and EVA, giving the conscientious professional and serious amateur a meticulousroadmap to superior understanding and investment returns. Or in Madden'swords, "The employment of CAPM/beta and related procedures has becomea ritual due not to empirical usefulness, but to its mathematical elegance- the touchstone of mainstream academic corporate finance." Thejustification for CFROIs demanding discipline is demonstrated early in thetext in an example, wherein the past real record of a hypothetical firmwith a stable 6.5 % ROI is converted into GAAP accounting numbers fromwhich an ROI series is calculated. In re the accounting-based returnhistory, Madden asks, "Who referring to (the chart) would not bemisled about a firm's performance relying on the (ROI gyrating between +24% and -10%) while the economic performance did not vary?"In short,if you don't know the facts, you can't solve the mystery. The predictiveand interpretive powers of the system's valuation metric is the result ofplain hard work, not the magical properties of some lazy man's statisticaldowsing rod like Earnings Momentum.Last widely employed during the TulipCraze of an earlier century, Earnings Momentum is based on the dubiousconcept that as long as accounting earnings, surreal and manipulable thoughthey be, go up, the stock should go up as fast as it does go up, unlessearnings don't go up as fast as expected, in which case we've beendisappointed, so it's not worth anything until the bookies can reestablishthe odds. Had we all expended the necessary effort on CFROI, we might haveanticipated or at least understood to our financial benefit and peace ofmind:IBM problems in the mid-80s to mid-90s that led to a restructuring;Wal-Mart's staggering gait beginning in the late 80's that producedunsatisfactory price action in the early 90's; Hewlett Packard's defianceof gravity in maintaining an exceptional internal rate of return; dittoAbbot Labs, Hershey and Wrigley's outperforming the market; the rebound ofAnalog Devices and the volatility of Advanced Micro Devices; and so on andon. The CFROI knowledge system dissects the firm and the value creationprocess, meticulously separating the past and present from the nebulousfuture, thereby establishing a mathematical basis for professionalinvestment decision making. The CFROI valuation model applies dividenddiscount technique to inflation-adjusted cash flow growth projections, using a firm-specific risk premium plus the market-required rate of returnto determine the firms warranted value and the equity's warranted price. CFROI resolves two fundamental equity valuation issues: the recognizedfallibility of the Capital Asset Pricing Model and the inherent inconstancyof accounting data. The former supplying a counter-intuitive cost ofcapital or required rate of return; the other concealing the real prospectsof the firm's wealth creating efforts. As the lengthy flow charts detailingthe process required to turn accounting hash into economic reality attest,CFROI is not a black box of unexplained miracles. It's a sweatshopequipped with empirically-proven, high tech tools which give the drivenamateur and dedicated professional the means to outrun the herd. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly exciting!!!!
Whether you are a mystery reader or a professional auditor or a CEO/CFO, you will gain from reading this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written new edition of fraud overview
Fraud is ever present, especially now. Authors Howard Silverstone and Howard R. Davia suggest that in recent years fraud has moved from the periphery of the corporate world to the center of it - from small, unprofitable, marginal companies to the biggest blue chips. The headlines about Enron, WorldCom and Global Crossing suggest that the authors are right. They do a commendable job of categorizing and explaining various kinds of fraud and the circumstances that make scams profitable. They offer enough anecdotes to fill a mystery novel writer's idea file for a year. Given that their book is also accessible, intelligible and, at times, even entertaining, we recommend protecting your company by reading it carefully. This may be your opportunity to avoid ever finding yourself at a board meeting trying to figure out "Who done it?" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Financial statements come to life with Comiskey and Mulford!
Have you ever wondered why the accountants' eyes glow when they see a financial statement? They're not wierd (after all), they're just wired differently. This book will change the way you feel about financial statements. I no longer am scared of deferred income taxes, LIFO reserves, restructuring charges, footnotes, and all those irritating financial details which I routinely ignored and hoped did not matter. I'm re-wired for my own good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for the serious financial analyst
This book provides the most clear and thorough guide to understanding financial statements I have seen. This is not for the faint of heart; understanding financial reporting at this level requires persistence and a willingness to work through some complex issues. However, at the end of the day Comiskey and Mulford leave diligent readers with the analytical tools to see beyond accounting conventions and grasp the underlying economic reality of a firm's performance.5-0 out of 5 stars Very similar to Financial Warnings, more indepth
This book is very similar to the previous book (Financial Warnings) by both authors. It is more indepth than its previous predesessor. I find the Financial Warnings to be better because it has more examples. (May be since I know the content of the previous book, this is like redundant.) Anyway, I would recommend you to buy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done www.MedicalBusinessAdvisors.com
In his book Financial Planning Handbook for Physicians and Advisors, Dr. David E. Marcinko, MBA, CMP, CFP provides us with a simple and yet very complete view on the basics of financial planning that every physician should know in order to maximize our chances for success in the financial aspect of our medical careers and personal lives. The book is well structured, organized and easy to read. Divided in ten chapters, it covers important aspects of personal financial planning such as insurance, home mortgages, retirement plans, auto buying, taxes and more.
5-0 out of 5 stars From the Foreword
The "Financial Planning Handbook for Physicians and Advisors" is essentially a "how-to book" on finance, financial planning and related topics for healthcare providers. Fortunately for patients, medicine requires a high degree of professional training, both in terms of science and technology. Unfortunately for providers, it affords little time for learning about financial or investment planning.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For once a practical summary I can use!
I found this publication very informative as in a single source, I was able to read about all of the productivity methods and measurement tools in the marketplace. As a novice to concepts like Six Sigma and activity based costing, it was a great to find in a few pages an explanation and practical implementation tips for these concepts and more.Starting with the overall history in this marketplace and then moving quickly into practical guidance, the author displayed a great command of the topics.I also saw how he blended the productivity measures to create a more meaningful accounting of a business operations....I just wish more companies took this approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Theories that work in the real world.
With over forty years of experience in helping dozens of companies to become more profitable, the author gives us the fruits of that experience by cutting through many of the extraneous elements of traditional accounting methods.Being competitive has always been about change and adapting to new paradigms. This books and its theories are a "next generation" of principles that move accounting systems into the next century.Just don't tell your competition about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lean Manufacturing must read
Lynn's book provides a very good overview of the methodologies being used today to improve corporate performance. We have suggested the use of this book to several of our clients so that performance improvements resulting from Lean Manufacturing and Lean/Six Sigma implementation can be accurately measured and tracked.
