Get the new edition, not the 9th edition
I am the co-author of this book.the 10th edition is now out.If you are a student, you'll want that.If you're trying to learn on your own, you'll find this 9th edition adequate and much cheaper. good luck.roman

Great for graduate study
Many people get this book wrong. This is a book for graduate students, not for undergraduates. It introduces the concepts of financial accounting in a condensed way, which does require more time and patient to understand it, like the way we study in MBA program. Since this book assumes its reader as future statement readers, it introduces finanical statements, including balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement,in the first few chapters to let student understand the linkage among them. It is usually very difficult to understand for those without background, though. Plus, given the fact that this book is required by most of top MBA programs, like Chicago, Columbia, and NYU, I'd like to say that accounting professors have told us the quality of this book. For those who have a hard time on this, I would also recommend its accompanied study guide and solution manuals (used one available on amazon website ISBN 0030269695& ASIN: 0030182697; make sure get the right edition!!). After all, this is a good book, but requires more practices. Good luck.

A Good Introductory Text
I'd never had any accounting courses before.This textbook was required for my financial accounting course in an MBA program.The book does a good job of logically explainingall the important topics.Unfortunately, it takes a Herculean effort to sit down and study the material due to the dry subject matter.Read more

An easy to understand accounting text is not an oxymoron!
I am a professor of accounting at a community college.If you have the opportuntity to use this accounting text consider yourself blessed.It is easy to understand and actually interesting, qualitites not often used to describe accounting texts.I highly recommend it.

A very systematic approach to Financial Accounting
I read this book as a part of my Accounting class in my Masters program.The book has a very systematic approach to teach the basic accountingprinciples. It has very nice real world examples at the beginning of eachchapter. The chapters are in a very orderly manner. I did not have anaccounting background at all. But the book taught things in a way thateverything made sense chapter after chapter. Each chapter conveyed ideasthat were basis for the subsequent chapters. The organization of the bookis one of the best among the text books I have read. Every chapter has ademonstration problem that covers main concepts in that chapter. Inaddition to that there are quick check questions within the chapter whichhelps you to stop and recollect whatever you learnt till different pointsin a chapter. Reading this book is never tiresome because of this. Alsothere are problems in each chapter that if worked out properly will providea very thorough knowledge of key concepts.As a whole, I would stronglyrecommend this book to anyone who wants to start start learning Accounting.There are very minor errors in the answers given to some problems. Still a great book
... The book would have no match for researchers had it been updated. However, I still feel the book teaches a lot about data management and data usage and is still agreat book for academic research. This is an unevitable book for the researchers. I would personally be obliged if the author could and publishers get the book updated.

Dated
Probably this was a great book on FSA in 1985, but now with the proliferation of FSA books, this outdated book has no place in one's book shelf. Get White, Sondhi & Fried. I don't understand why the author hasnever bothered to update this book.

One of the best basicFSA books
"Financial Statement Analysis" is one of the very best basic textbooks in its field. It guides the readers through both teoretical (academic) and practical sides of financial statement analysis. The text is clear cut and rather easily read, but heavier discussions of important topics are found in the appendices. The only real disadvantage of this book is its age. Especially in the data analysis part of financial statement analysis has there been considerable changes since 1986, with respect to capacity and speed of computers etc. The examples too are of course somewhat outdated. Process Improvement - simplified
Work Simplification made simpler, process improvement achieved - what more could you want?And Ben's book provides the details for getting started and soon accomplishing your goals. An easy read - with everything to gain at a low cost, basically no cost -just your time (which isn't asking much, it's a fast read). The logic is simple, illustrations outstanding, and excellent coverage of an important yet downplayed topic.Now that BPM is among us - do yourself a favor and get immersed in the Graham Methodology and toolset - better than shelling out 6 figures for another product that is going to double in cost by the time your're serious about implementation.

Successful Flowcharting
The Graham family have been involved in work-flow and work-simplification for 3 generations. This book brings together the work of Ben, his father and his grandfather, in an easy to follow text that explains both their approach to flowcharting and why it has been so successful.

What's good in it?
First of all, this book doesn't give the pleasure of good reading. C'mon, what kind of pleasure do you expect from a 500 pages book with very small fonts?
BEST ANALYSIS OF ACTIVITY BASED COSTING AND HOW TO GUIDE
Kaplan and Cooper have put together an outstanding guidebook for managers to follow in order to reap the most significant benefits from activity based costing and other cost management techniques.The great merit of this book is that it does not preach to the reader the latest management fad, but rather goes through a thorough analysis of budgeting processes, highlighting benefits and drawbacks of each.They do not claim ABC is the best approach, and even praise some simpler methods that are more adequate for certain companies.Instead, they point to the circumstances in which ABC can provide outstanding results to companies. The very best book on activity-based management.
I have read this book cover to cover and have re-read chapters.Kaplan ensures that you grasp the fundamental concepts by keeping things simple. He illustrates the concepts with easy to understand examples. I gained very little knowledge from the first 3 ABM books I read, but after reading "Cost and Effect," I felt that I had a good enough grasp of the fundamentals to actually implement a costing system. ... A review of Accounting Theory text
Inmy opinion, this is an outstanding text.It is easy to read and it covers all the important areas of accouning theory.In my view, this text eliminates the need for the student to study sentences trying to understandwhat is being said.The writing is clear and straight to the point.Thus,one can concentrate on learning, not trying to unscramble sentences formeaning.If you are looking for an accounting theory text, give this one alook-see.My guess is that you will like what you read.Like all theory texts, however, this one does NOT come with much material to assist aninstructor (e.g., no test bank, no transparencies to assist in teaching,etc.).About the only thing I found was an accompanying booklet that givesanswers to "cases" that are in given for each chapter.However,this is not a serious drawback, in my view.Because of skimpy supportingmaterial, I would think that authors would notice this and "corner themarket" by trying to please educators.Given the excellence of thistext, my guess is that ample supporting materials would put this text inlots of classrooms.But that is just my opinion.

Well presented and simple to understand. But lack.....
This book has presented the Accounting Theory in a simple to understand manner. It is useful for those who need to acquire simple to understand theories in the FASB. Great Help
I used both the review books and the CD rom with practice exams and passed the first time!

BISK BEC Book and Software
I have serious issues with the quality of the BEC Review by Bisk.I have successfully used all four sections of Bisk's review, but I want to warn potential purchasers of the lack of quality in this volume.Sure, the BEC section is "new", but the editing was terrible on both the book and the software, simple mistakes as mentioned by the other posts.For the amount of money review materials cost - it should be mistake free.THE REAL PROBLEM THOUGH, is the lack of information in the IT section.They use AICPA developed questions for their practice sections, but fail to discuss nearly half of the answers in the text.I read the chapter two times before taking the practice questions, and had NO IDEA where some of the q's were getting pulled from.On the software, it has a link that says "click here for in depth solution."This takes you to the text where the answer is supposed to be found, many times, it was not there.Often times, impossible to infer the answer from the text as well.I would not waste money on Bisk's BEC section.

Better CPA review than most!!
For the money, Bisk is hard to beat.The strongest part of the Bisk review, in my opinion, are the Audio CD's.They don't just read from the book, like some audio CD's.They actually engage you in a friendly, often humorous, manner.This really helped me to remember key concepts.I believe Bisk has the best examples in their books of all the providers.Except maybe for Becker...but you can't buy Becker books without buying their WHOLE program. And you can buy these books dirt cheap on Amazon.Like any review program, it is only good if you use it.And if you don't put the time and effort into it, it won't work.I also take issue with the other reviews on the BEC book.I think Bisk has done a great job with the BEC section. ...
