5-0 out of 5 stars Straight and to the point
Most texts I've read on Accounting (from my father's extensive library) are long on explanation and short on worked examples. The Schaum series on Accounting is just the opposite. No need to wade through a ton of explanation. A short explanation is followed by worked examples and numerous test questions followed by the answers, fully worked. I'm just starting out in accounting, and sometimes the concepts didn't really gel with me.But by doing the test questions, and in particular being able to check the results and supplied workings, I found that I learnt the principles much more quickly than I would have otherwise, and was able to retain the understanding.
3-0 out of 5 stars Well Organized Material
Schaum's Financial Accounting is a well-written book which augmented my accounting studies.

I am an accounting student. I love this book!I have bought all the Schaum's books related to Accounting. If I had to choose just one book, it would be this one.I get lost trying to follow our textbook.I open this puppy up and it has everything.I'm able to follow the explanations and examples without any problem.Trust me!You will not be disappointed.I was very impressed by how fast my books got to me.I had books coming to me within 2 days.In less than one week's time, I had all 7 books. It really is worth it. :-) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of $$$
This is a badly written book due to the attempt of using Ivy League elucidations for topics that should be told straightforward in terms of simple language. It also doesn't help to use end-of-the-book topics as examples or part of discussions in the early part of the book. In the end, this book causes more damage and confusion for someone attempting to learn the basic concepts of accounting for the first time. I'm embarrassed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty bad
Antle, being caught up in his own Yale-educated thesaurus, fails to explicitly reiterate Financial topics that may be lost to less familiar students.Fortunately, I had another book on the same topic that served as a mentor through a horrid and fast paced class on said suibject, while this one failed miserably. It also is missing certain topics that other books cover.

3-0 out of 5 stars not for beginners
I bought this book mainly due to its conciseness(350 pages of text), since I'm a computer science student and only hope to get some basic ideas on accounting. However, I find it takes even longer to get through this book than a double-sized, but friendly-written textbook. I have to admit the accuracy and conciseness of the way that definitions and explanations are given; unfortunately, those words are no more comprehensible than the GAAP lines. Real-world financial reports are given from beginning to end, but lacks clear explanations, leaving readers pondering over the exact meaning of each newly-confronted item. It does have merits, and that's the emphasis on the correspondence between economic and accounting concepts, which is more profound than most other books. Maybe this book is a good refresher, but it's definitely not for novices. I hope it hadn't been my first accounting book. Frustrated, I turned to another book written by Horngren (Financial Accounting and Cisco Report Package, 8e), and that turns out to be the right primer for me

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.
This book is horrible. I'm using it in my advanced accounting class right now and all I can say is that this book is a waste of time. Its exercises are backwards, not in any form you'd ever run accross in the real world. There's no explanation for the topics. You're thrown into the book expected to know all of the information it presents. If this information is new to you you'll need another accounting book anyways. Save your money and just buy a nice, well written text book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read on SFAS 141 and 142
If you need to comply with SFAS 141 and 142, you will want to read this book. The authors understand these standards inside and out.The book's coverage is practical, thorough and written in easy to understand language (which is important because the changes outlined in SFAS 141 and 142 are far reaching and complex.)The best part of this book is that in addition to providing compliance guidance for SFAS 141 & 142, it also shows you how to apply the standards. This is key!I also found the book helpful on showing me how to identify and value intagible assests which is still a somewhatnew area for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great coverage of new SFAS 141 and 142

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful information on legal collections.
I thought this book dealt with legal collections more than anything else.I think it would be helpful to any business owner hoping to jump start their collections or accounts receivable department. It is an easy read and has some helpful information for any business owner or credit professional.

3-0 out of 5 stars Legal Collections Made Easy
This book is a quick read, but if you've done collections before, then you won't find much help in it.The author is well-expereinced in legal collections. That's her expertise.A consumer and corporate small to medium balance collector won't find this book that useful. It gives a lot of legal tips and how to write promissory notes, but for the majority of us who don't have time for this, it doesnt' tell us anything we don't already know. She has a debtor excuse section, but she writes it more in theory than someone who has done it a lot.She also doesn't tell us anything new to use in our repetoire of overcoming, "check is in the mail."I wouldn't rate this a great book, I find Tim Paulsen & The Sher brothers' books better and more practical.I'd rate her book "fair."

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Presented
This book is poorly written. There does not appear to be any presentational logic used. The same topic will be brushed upon on one page, dealt with in a more in depth fashion on another, and then brought up again later.Important points are often difficult to ascertain, obscured as they often are by more irrelevant text.ALso, different modes of presentation, such as list fashion displays of audit techniques, or other means such as various,"blue" sections, makes it difficult to study this text in a systematic manner. Then there are the review questions, which professors love to assign as weekly homework.THey are often made up of 10 part answers.A little thought about how students actually learn, rather than using a convenient presentational method based on how lazy tenured professors like to teach (or write) could make this book more useful. As it is, most of my knowledge of these topics will be gained through CPA exam reviews.SInce CPA reviews depend on the preferences of people who actually use them, I do not doubt they will be much better.PS:down with tenure.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very difficult to follow for first-time auditing students
This book is very confusing for beginning auditing students. This is my first auditing course and I'm having a difficult time completing the homework because I don't understand what is being asked of me. If I had previous auditing experience it might make a little more sense, but it seems like the author is repeating a lot of stuff over and over in the first few chapters without really explaining what you're supposed to be doing. It all seems very abstract, which makes it difficult to apply what you're learning to the homework. If you're looking for an indtroductory book to auditing, I would not recommend this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5e might be different from past editions-reviews from others
This review is based on the 5th edition. I have used this book for ongoing reference in doing Sarbanes Oxley compliance projects. I have found it to be very solid, and includes coverage that is very much attuned to the environment we are under today in terms of complying with SOX. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book helped me get two 4.0's!!!!!!!!!
I didn't have a background in accounting (I had finished a BA in History not too long before going back to school)prior to reading the book.I thought the book was well laid out and made it easy to learn. One thing the book did lack was the answers to the questions so you could at least check your final answer although it does have quick check answers on some of the problems.Even though I knew nothing about accounting prior to the 2 classes that used the book, and I took them as intensive A term and B term classes during the summer while working full time I still managed to get 4.0's in both classes. Because of that I would have to recommend this book.If I could get through 16 chapters of material in 7 weeks and earn those grades then it has to have something to do with the book! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars difficult read
it seems like the writers of this text's intentions were to confuse the hell out of finance majors and intimidate them so that they would stay away from the finance 'game'.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Foundations of Finance by Arthur J. Keown
This is an excellent text. I've read it thoroughly. The material , as presented, assumes a robust course in accounting at the college level. This text is for a student desiring a complete rendition in basic finance topics and techniques. The text is replete with many examples and challenging problems of various complexities. The presentation is easy to read. The book is directed to students perhaps majoring in economics or finance. It is not a purely descriptive rendition of finance. A5-0 out of 5 stars Of all those Management books...
This was the best.A very clear and concise book for the serious student being introduced to the subject of Finance.Other books on the subject I've seen are very abstruse or just plain hard to read aside from weighing a ton. I had another book twice as thick to complement this one and my class abandoned it in short order. This book is comparatively light and chalk full of useful ideas and examples laid out in anorganized and methodical manner. The generous use of charts and tables was executed well. Probably as simple as finance can possibly be put while still retaining the rigor and teaching the processes necessary for making financial computations. Read more
