A must-read for junior accounting doctoral students!
Before reading any classical texts from Watts & Zimmerman and Beaver, I think any junior accounting doctoral sdudents should read this book!
A Research Book
Professor Scott explains financial accounting theory drawn from recent research. He provides a clear, easy-to-use framewaork for students to 1) place this theory in a financial accounting context,2) explain and analyze the theory intuitvely and 3) reveal the theory's relevance in understanding the practice of accounting. Outdated but mostly useful
I like some of what Larry has to say, but I find much has changed since the book was first written.Some of the principles don't change, like developing a budget, but many things are difficult to work in a modern age.Most young couples are problably fall into the 'Dual Incomes No Kids' category.You generally don't go to the grocery store with your grocery envelope, or take the family check book and write them a check.
A Must Have for Every Couple
If you are not one to be led by Biblical values, then this book will not be very appealing to your sensibilities.Larry Burkett writes from a conservative, Christian based perspective.He gives Biblically-based practical guidance on budgeting, approaching debt, life insurance, retirement, teaching financial principals to your children, as well as several other financial issues.His assumption is that family is your priority and that when a married couple has children, the wife will stay home to care for the children -- thus he gives most guidance assuming that at some point a couple will have only one income.He also assumes that the husband takes his Biblical place as head of his home as leader, protector and provider.He uses the Bible to support his assertions.
Sound advice, but a little outdated
I noticed the reviews are either 5 stars or 1 star! This book definitely deserves more than 1 star as it does contain some very sound advice and is great for those who need good solid financial training.

Starts Slow, Finishes Strong
This is a fairly ambitious book about Mr. Duncan's conviction that the dollar will soon collapse.Written to convince readers of the author's thesis, it is filled with graphs and other technical charts that provide evidence for his theories.The first two parts list graphs publicly available from the Federal Reserve website and then weave together a doomsday scenario based on the increasing debt of the world and the trade deficit.Lacking anecdotes, only a technical analyst would enjoy the first half of the book, because it is written in a textbook style.Part Three, starting with monetarism, is where the book revs up.The author explains that monetarism, i.e. pumping money into the economy to make it better during bad times, is like pouring water over a drowning child.He states, "The failure of those attempts will be the death of monetarism, which claims that any economic difficulty can be overcome simply by adjusting the money supply up or down depending on the circumstances.It will be death through drowning."For people who wonder what is going on when the Federal Reserve raises or lowers interest rates, this book provides a basic but very well-written overview of monetarism (the guiding light behind the modern-day Fed) and may also provide some tangential insight into Bernacke's academic writings (Bernacke perfers inflation targeting rather than regulating the money supply, and the book seems to validate Bernacke's ideas).Grieder's _Secrets of the Temple_ is a much more detailed and fun to read book about monetarism and the Fed, and if you are able to invest the time, it is a better read.However, it lacks Mr. Duncan's concise explanation of monetarism as well as Mr. Duncan's proposals on how to fix the problems we face.One idea, a global minimum wage for export-based industries in other countries, is very interesting.He even promulgates a possible enforcement mechanism for this, and one has to give him credit for at least trying to suggest a solution.If successful, a global minimum wage should reduce the trade deficit we have with other countries and will spread Henry Ford's philosophy about rank-and-file workers being able to afford the products they make.I wish the author had either bypassed or made more fun to read the first two parts.It appears Mr. Duncan may have approached this book as a dissertation or textbook at first and added more relevant sections later on.Indeed, the last chapter focuses on the "Bernacke put," which is difficult to understand but at least shows that the author tried to make his book as current and relevant as possible.Overall, this is a quick read that makes its points using good evidence.It would have been helpful if the author added a section suggesting what the individual investor can do to protect himself or herself in the future.I am _not_ making recommendations here, but other than gold, you may also consider investing in currency ETFs if you agree with the author.

A disturbing book
The United States is living beyond its means because the rest of the world accepts dollar denominated securities in exchange for goods and services.According to some people, the world's appetite for Amercian paper is inexhaustible.The Chinese, the Japanese, the Koreans, the Europeans, the oil exporters - they all love the dollar and want to hold many more of them.Other people - including the author of this book - believe that the huge US current account deficit is unsustainable and will destroy the dollar's position as the world's reserve currency.Who is right?Paul Volcker, Warren Buffet and several other prominent investors have taken the pessimistic view.Even the Fed admits that the "imbalances" will eventually correct themselves, albeit"in an orderly fashion."But how can this happen without a large fall in the value of the dollar?.As Richard Duncan explains, this problem has been caused by free trade between high wage and low wage countries.The low wage countries have accumulated enormous dollar reserves while our net investment position with the rest of the world has gone into the red by some $3 trillion.Some one once said that losing Saudi Arabia would be like losing the Federal Reserve.When and if the dollar ceases to be the world's reserve currency, it will be like losing Saudi Arabia and much more besides.

an educational book
This book is good if you want to understand more about global economics, (which is why I bought the book).It is rather doom and gloom, and it was published in 2002 so the info isn't as up to date as it could be, but I have still found it very informative.Not a light read--will make your brain work. ... A Great Treatise on Wealth Management
Mr. Evensky's book has had a profound impact on my wealth management philosophy.He is very effective in blending the broad scope of investment management theory with "real world", practical application.I found it particularly useful because it is not a book written by an academic who has never sat across the table from a client and held their hand through the good times and the tough.This is a must read for any serious manager of wealth. I had expected a typical fluff, despite Evensky's fine reputation.I has very surprised at this mixture of practical advice and theory.Pointers are given to other sources for those more theoretically inclined.Some ofthe practical advice (software recommendations and such) won't age asgracefully as the text itself, these packages will become obsolete beforethe book. Nevertheless, I'd highly recommend it for anyone who is lookingto understand the basics of risk/reward, the importance of assetallocation, and the theoretical material that led to these ideas.

Excellent Five CD Set!

One of the best I've read
I am not a CPA or Finance major. I am a physicist so the math is not intimidating.I have been investing as an amateur since retirement and this book gives solid and easily understood ways to get at the valuation of a company and its stock by investigating the financial statements.There is a good comprehensive case study at the end of the book, but I wish the authors would give more examples either within or at the end of each chapter.
Informative, but hard to read
I did not finish this book because it is written in a very academic and hard to grasp language. Authors, please make your sentences a little shorter and simpler, the book is very boring and verbose! However, I must give credit to the authors for including almost all of the tools one will need for analysis of financial statements.

Each edition of this book just gets better and better!

I thought this was going to be a penetrating, incisive look at financial statement chicanery -- instead I got a recap of things I already learned in HOWARD SCHLIT's (better edited, clearer) book.

Very helpful for beginners
I'm chemical Engineer and I'm working on my thesis on to get the Master in Sc. I had no clue in VaR, this book help not only to understand it but to apply it further pure finances.

Until something better comes along. . .
The other reviewers are correct about the errors.The results of Mr. Butler's formulas sometimes don't match the formulas themselves which in turn don't match his results in the spreadsheets.Also, the grammar, particularly the punctuation, leaves much to be desired.This book had either a poor editor or no editor.

There are a number of errors in the book, thus making it very hard to get through.Additionally, I spoke to the publisher and there is NOT a second edition of this book available yet - so don't bother with the book.I was also surprised there is nowhere to get copies of the spreadsheets from on the web!!Read more
